Starwood launching green hotel brand in Mass. (source:Associated Press)

Starwood is launching a "green hotel brand" called Element, with the first property opening in July in Lexington, Mass., and 20 more hotels scheduled to open in the next year.

The hotels are built with technology that saves water and cuts electric use, including heat-reflecting roofing materials, energy-efficient appliances and 16-foot windows to allow natural light into common areas. Laundry bags will be reusable, hybrid cars will get preferred parking, and garbage cans in the rooms will make it easy for guests to recycle.

Luxurious Peru: Government pushes for high-end tourism (source:The Associated Press)

lWith four-digit inflation and violent Maoist guerrillas, Peru for many years was hardly the place for a seaweed wrap in a swank hotel.

But nowadays, relative peace and a booming economy draw boutique travellers to the Andean terrain and ancient ruins that were previously the domain of brave, budget-conscious backpackers.

(...)

Yet as free-market President Alan Garcia speeds the development of Peru's high-end tourism sector, he is sparking a standoff with local residents who say they won't benefit from the boom. Earlier this year, protesters shut Cuzco's airport and blocked the only rail line to Machu Picchu to make their point.

(...)

Strong economic growth is forecast to continue in Peru this year, and as many as 200,000 high-end tourists are expected, according to industry officials.

Starwood Hotels, which runs the Sheraton, Westin and other chains, plans three luxury hotels over the next three years, including a 192-room hotel in Cuzco. Hilton also has a plot there.

New Starwood hotel to open in Birmingham (source:Birmingham Mail)

BIRMINGHAM city centre's first planned five star hotel is "lowering its expectations" after getting the go-ahead to cram in more bedrooms.

The new 23-storey Starwood hotel, at Snow Hill, will now have 198 rooms after developers successfully applied to lower the ceilings by ten inches to squeeze in 28 extra bedrooms.

Architects have been working overtime to ensure the outside of the hotel looks the same despite the internal rearrangement.

They settled on increasing the height to 261m and reducing the ceiling heights to 9ft 10ins.

The Snow Hill landmark hotel will be the American chain's first hotel in England and its board members demanded the extra rooms.

(...)
The hotel is part of the £500 million regeneration of Snow Hill and will be next to one of 's tallest buildings, a 43-storey residential tower which will be opposite St Chad's Cathedral.

As part of the deal developers have agreed to pay £1.5 million to build a public arts wall in the area which councillors hope will become a major attraction.

And the planning committee also gave permission for two more hotels to be built just outside the city centre near the Aston Science Park.

The Marriott Group got permission to build a 195 bedroom hotel in Holt Street and the Intercontinental Hotel Group can now build an eight-storey 130 bedroom hotel in Love Lane.

Really ?

There's always the risk that clippings from uninformed local newspapers will contain nonsense like this. What they actually meant to say is that the new Birmingham property will be a Westin, which indeed will be the first Westin in England.

The Westin Book Cadillac Detroit to open (source: Business Wire)

Transformation in Detroit continues as the once storied Book Cadillac hotel comes to life as the new Westin Book Cadillac Detroit on October 1, 2008. As construction crews ready this grand dame of hospitality, preparations are underway for a two-day celebration and grand opening on October 24 and 25. The event will mark the next chapter of the historic icon commemorating the completion of the nearly $200 million restoration of what was the tallest hotel in the world when it opened in 1924.

The Ferchill Group, a Cleveland-based development company, is resurrecting the Book Cadillac to its former glory with a 455-room Westin hotel and more than 60 luxury residences situated on the top floors – more than 90 percent of the residences are sold.

Aloft hotel to open in Dallas (source:The Dallas Morning News)

While Dallas city officials tussle over plans to build a convention center hotel, two developers have quietly started work on one.

Ted and Larry Hamilton's Aloft hotel project on Young Street is just south of the Dallas Convention Center.

"We are the closest hotel to the front door," said Ted Hamilton, who plans to have the boutique hotel open in 16 months.

Last week, crews from Andres Construction began work to turn an 83-year-old building at 1033 Young St. into a luxury hotel.

The project will be Starwood Hotels & Resorts' first Aloft hotel in Dallas.

Built as a warehouse for the Santa Fe Railway, the eight-story brick building has been vacant for more than a decade. Hamilton Properties is converting the 160,000-square-foot structure into a 193-room hotel.

(...)

"The Starwood people are describing this as an Aloft on steroids," said Larry Hamilton. "It will cost $34 million."
