Sheraton may open in Sochi for 2014 Olympic games (source:The Moscow Times)

There may still be six years to go until the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, but officials are anxious to show that the Black Sea resort will not face the same criticisms as Moscow did last week, when the capital's hotels struggled to cope with an influx of football fans for the Champions League final.

The final, which many have seen as an early test of Russia's readiness to welcome hordes of foreign visitors for the Olympics, received a boost when the government rushed through a law to suspend the country's complex visa regime for those traveling to the match at Moscow's Luzhniki stadium.

Yet the estimated 40,000 traveling English fans stretched the capital's hotels to the limits -- and beyond.

(...)

"Companies such as Sheraton and Hilton are conducting negotiations to open hotels here, and Radisson is looking to expand," Pavlovich said.

There are already two Radisson hotels in Sochi.

Five-star operator Kempinski has also been eyeing Sochi, even since before the city won its bid for the Olympics.

Westin Napa

I quoted earlier poster on the new Westin in Napa by mistake. Tried to edit it out but didn't work. Sorry.
Just read about this new hotel this week and the article mentioned that a Ritz Carlton was also being built. Both of these will attract many to Copia and to the new oxbow market. Will be good for Napa.

But it won't be so great for Napa this year. Opening date appears to have been postponed until January 2009.

The Westin Chosun Busan spent US$ 6.25 million in renovation(source:The Korea Herald)

Since its grand opening on June 3, 1978, the Westin Chosun Busan has always been considered one of the most glamorous places to stay in Busan - Korea's second-largest city after Seoul and the country's biggest seaport.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the only international brand hotel in Busan is now readier than ever to provide its guests with the highest level of hospitality through luxurious services and amenities.

(...)
The newly opened Beach Athletic Club should be a welcome addition to visitors, providing a rich and relaxing experience with the latest equipment and programs.

(...)

The hotel spent over 6.5 billion won ($6.25 million) in renovating its main entrance, lobby area, guest facilities and the Presidential Suite. Another 8 billion won was used to upgrade all guestrooms, suites and new WestinWORKOUT rooms.

The renovations tapped the talents of Italian architect Guido Stefanoni, who also designed the Frette flagship store in Paris. His most striking design is the crystal chandelier - a collection of 150,000 hand-crafted crystal cubes - which has the effect of transforming the lobby into a glamorous Hollywood set.

This glittering lobby melds seamlessly into the sunken lobby lounge, which plays on the French Riviera-like view of Haeundae Beach. A crystal piano, specially designed and handmade by Nicolaus Schimmel of the Schimmel Company, encases double-length piano strings - a perfect marriage of classic aesthetic beauty and resonating, melodic tones.

The hotel has also introduced a unique door system combining an automatic sliding door and a revolving door to its front entry, the first of its kind in the country, to guarantee the safest escape in times of emergency. The upgrades went through a testing phrase, and the result was a huge success.

Four Points on Eastern Beach has finished upgrading its balconies (source: Geelong)

THE Four Points Sheraton on Eastern Beach has finished upgrading its balconies to conform with Australian safety standards.

Geelong's Sheraton general manager Bryan Dennis said the hotel previously had toughened glass panels, but these were installed before the Australian standard was changed in 2006.

Mr Dennis said the hotel had spent $150,000 on replacing the toughened glass panels with stainless steel handrails.

Balconies and the al fresco dining area at the front of the hotel had been closed to the public while the work was undertaken.

Mr Dennis said the work had now been completed and all areas were open again.

Royal Hawaiian closing for renovations (source: Associated Press)

Hawaii's famed pink Royal Hawaiian Hotel is closing for seven months as the 81-year-old structure gets a facelift.

The $110 million renovation includes koa furnishings, Moroccan-inspired stone patterns and new lighting fixtures.

It's only the second time in history the Royal Hawaiian has closed. The first was during World War II when it served as housing for the Navy after Pearl Harbor was bombed.

The local tourism industry will lose 528 rooms until the hotel reopens to the public in January.

The Westin Verasa Napa is more hotel than residence. Owners are limited to using it as a "residence" for only about 28 days per year. The rest of the time, it must be offered for rent as a hotel. Discussion can be continued in this thread:
