That is REALLY unbelievable. Stayed there once during the 1/2/3 promo few years back. Absolutely fine for a one night stay but calling it a RESORT makes no sense unless they want to start charging undisclosed resort fees.....

I think you hit the nail on the head. Same with The Ballantyne (read William's previous posts in the Master Thread), Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Beach Hotel, W Fort Lauderdale, and Westin Bayshore.

Simple. They applied for and received the designation through their brand and regional Starwood authorities.

Well if it worked for 4P Ventura then I am sure those authorities will have no problem with approving my garage as a resort. I promise to keep resort fee low and offer plat alternative amenity.

First: Please, please, please: no ft should ever use their free resort night here.

Had a recent stay: haven't been here in 2 years (they used to block weekends to be 2 night minimum stays).
Rate wasn't great. Booked a 2 queen garden-facing room.

First new change: parking is $10/night. There seems to be street parking behind the property, but you'd need a walk around the hotel.
Arrived really late at night. Asked for a king room: front desk said it was sold out for the evening (which it was). I was too tired to push for anything different.
No suite upgrade (but there are only a couple on the property, and I don't even know if they're in the upgrade pool: I've never gotten one).
Was offered a "coupon" for the restaurant: I was expecting free breakfast. Nope: the coupon was for 2:1 drink, 50% off of an entree, and something else fairly worthless.
Did receive the "goodie bag" which is an apple, another water, a granola bar and some small candies. Oh, and a flyer for the new "Spa".

No resort fee (yet...)

No change to the outdoor walkway to the garden rooms: the carpet is still old, a bit moldy and needs to be replaced. They did seem to refurbish the outdoor part of the other part of the property.

The rooms have been completely re-gutted and brought up to 4P standards. They were nice and clean.
They did replace the wall a/c, and it was less noisy than before (I had the heat on).

I could not connect my Mac laptop to the wireless or wired internet (it would not connect to the registration page): I tried a couple of times, and gave up. (I've had this problem at the LAX Gateway too, and a couple of other times at other properties: no idea what the problem is)
It did seem like the Internet was working. I instead used my Clear hotspot (3g).

I was out the door the next morning by 830a: did not ask for late checkout (sorry).

Front desk agent asked, "how my stay was?" I replied, "just ok". "Just ok?" "Yes." Nothing else from her.
And that's the same feeling I got from the property a couple of years ago: this property just doesn't care. They have enough paying customers (there was a wedding the next day onsite) so they really can just be indifferent.

I wonder what the 4P brand standards are for a resort...would be interesting to see.

Parking charge!

I just wanted to highlight this change because it was an unpleasant surprise. Having stayed there a couple times before (when parking was free), I didn't check the website for parking. I can't imagine anyone arriving at this hotel other than by car, so basically they are trying to hide a $10 increase in room rates.

Thumbs down still sub par

A few comments from my recent stay...

I had to burn a few nights to complete my Plat challenge. Chose to spend two nights at this property to take a weekend trip to Santa Barbara area. The previous reviews are correct. This property is tired, overpriced, and NOT a resort.

The $10 parking fee is a joke. The "secured" parking lot is a lot behind the hotel with a parking gate. The gate is not controlled by a room card or anything. You just drive up to the gate, and the arm opens automatically. The woman at check in told me they "aren't quite up to speed" so the gate is not controlled by room card access yet.

Also of note is the fact that this property gives you 1/2 of the bonus points you would expect. For example, the Gold amenity at this property is only 125 (as opposed to the usual 250). The Green choice points are only 250 (as opposed to 500). Thinking this was a mistake, I did an online chat with SPG. They called the hotel and confirmed that this property only awards half the points. Lame.

If you must stay at this property, and need a quiet room, ask for room 101. We stayed there. It's a trek from the lobby, but it's the last room on the row (which means only one neighbor), and it does not have a room above it. Despite the above criticisms, I was surprised to see the hotel was very busy.

I just stayed here this last weekend and thought it was about what I expected. Everything was clean, beds were comfy, and we got decent views of the harbor. I think the 3,000 points I used were about right - I would not pay ~100+ to stay here however.

Got the token for 2 for 1 beers (actually any item is a BOGO) which was nice.

As mentioned above, parking fee is stupid.

Gold members only get 125 points at ALL participating Four Points/Alofts/Elements. This is the standard amenity. Platinum members get 250 points.

I recently stayed at this property two weeks ago and was pleased at my stay:

As a Platinum guest, I received

-free upgrade to a corner room with a large outdoor balcony (suites were sold out)
-free wifi (free for all guests)
-4pm late checkout wasn't granted b/c of it's a Resort hotel
-250 welcome amenity
-a welcome bag (two waters, apples, granola bar, and various candies)

I wrote more about the Four Points Ventura Harbor Resort on my blog if you would like to read a full detailed review with pictures - http://pointssummary.com/2013/01/28/...-hotel-review/

I stayed at this hotel as a platinum for 2 nights and was very pleased with my stay. Hotel was full for a convention (that I wasn't attending), but I got a nice top floor room that was spacious and had a good view of the harbor. The location is quite good, with numerous seafood restaurants available within a short walk. The restaurant was closed to the public because of the convention, but they served breakfast in the bar, and that was fine with me. I'd certainly stay here again...Oh, and the front desk personnel were uniformly very friendly.

Have a BRG reservation here at the end of this month. The BRG was approved because no availability was found on spg.com because of a minimum stay requirement.

An agent a the hotel sent me the conformation email with 2 Queen beds. I asked that she changes the bed type from 2 queens to 1 king. I was told there were no availability and if someone cancels, she would give it to me. I then went to spg.com and made a booking for a king bed for 2 nights (which was the minimum stay) requirement and sent her an email saying cancel the reservation and change my booking to a king bed. I really don't know why I have to go through all of this just to change the bed type.
