quick update
I called a week ahead to ask a few questions about the layout of the room. The lovely front desk attendant looked at the booking and pre-blocked us into a jr suite. This was further upgraded to one of their full suites at check-in.
While it's not the most impressive hotel, the great staff and quieter setting more than made up for it.
I wish more hotels with aging infrastructure realized that great staff can make a ho-hum hotel into a great experience!

I'm booking two weekend award nights in the summer for a standard room, and from the looks of the convention center schedule it doesn't seem like there will be any major events around the hotel when I'm staying. I'm SPG Gold, does anyone have any insight on the likelihood of getting upgraded to a Club room in the peak season when there's no convention traffic?

ehh, but the price is right
That is this property in a nutshell.
Had to fight with them and involve corporate to get a points stay this weekend because they said they "don't do that in summer". Uh, no. Yes you do when you have standard rooms available, which they did. It was also completely ridiculous because we booked Fri - Sunday with my friend whose name the reservation was under and from whose account the points reservation was made arriving & checking in Friday and me joining her on Saturday. They acted like they'd never seen this before. No breakfast rate or anything so it wasn't like we were trying to sneak someone else in.
No upgrade to a suite even though she's a plat, but the Club room was fine so we didn't push it -- didn't really need it. Room was a little dated but in good repair. Lounge theoretically open for breakfast on Sunday but there wasn't breakfast out. We didn't push the issue since we were headed to the Boardwalk anyway, but it would have been nice to get a coffee before we went. Overall I found the hotel's delivery pretty poor. They seemed content to do the bare minimum. Did give us the late checkout we requested - could only do 2 but that was really fine with us anyway.
Location wise, it's OK. Cabs are plentiful if you don't want to walk -- but the walk was fine. A quick walk to Caesar's and then cut through to the boardwalk. If you're used to an urban environment and being street smart, you're fine. Be aware of your surroundings. I found the area on the boardwalk down by the Tropicana and old Hilton to be seedier in all honesty. Is the Sheraton as nicely located as the casino hotels? Of course not, but the cash price is about 1/3 and the tradeoff was well worth it as neither of us are anywhere near gamblers enough to be in the comp area.
I'd stay there again if it was peak season and the price was right (points or $$). If it was off peak and/or weekday and the boardwalk hotels were a better deal, I'd stay there because they're just a bit nicer.

update - still one to avoid
Still a property to avoid. Older building/rooms with some very nice individual employees.
Unfortunately, the entire hotel has an air of unwelcoming, ungracious nickel and dime pettiness. Basic customer service training would go a long way to helping one ignore the old bathrooms, intermittent water pressure, faded carpets, etc. Front desk staff and management were outright rude and argumentative.
"Lounge" is a space on the 16th floor requiring a key in the elevator which has some old fruit, granola bars and a coffee maker - it was out of milk and the coffee was not working when we were there. There was a small refrigerator with cold bottles of water, which was convenient. (We went in the early evening.) The computer did not turn on and I'm not sure if there was a printer. I think I did pass a computer area in the lobby.
In lieu of breakfast or evening hors d'oeuvres, they allow 1 single breakfast coupon good for 2 people and kids under 12. Breakfast was not particularly good (miserable crunchy/dry pancakes with blueberry pie filling, eggs, fruit, etc.) FYI, we were there for a banquet, which was extremely disappointing for a food quality/price with very rude waiters. They could not accommodate a simple request like no gravy on the beef.
Unlike my last stay (5 years ago, maybe?) they no longer upgrade to a full suite, but only a slightly larger room. Chose not to ask for SNA. I was given a lot of attitude about getting connecting rooms when I called prior to arrival, but it was eventually done for me. Feather-free bedding was an outright argument for no good reason.
I applaud Sheraton for trying to differentiate itself with a standard, but wish they would stand behind it (full breakfast for registered guests plus points if you don't run a real lounge. This way, the hotel can make the lounge offerings conform with their needs/revenue and I can feel like I'm getting something for booking a Sheraton with an expectation of a lounge if it's closed.
I did have to call the hotel to dispute some extra small charges that were not on my bill, but were charged the next day on my credit card and will now ALSO have to call SPG to get the full points credited to my account.
Very much a shame, as a cheerful welcoming attitude can make an older hotel more acceptable.

Just stayed at this property for my first visit to AC. Had a $69 rate plus promo points, so decided to book here. Gold member and have SPG Amex Open, had to talk into getting an "upgrade" to high floor 14, better view (got view of convention center??) and access to lounge. Rooms were fine, except for stained carpet. Rooms have microwave and fridge. Also Starbucks Dark Roast which was fantastic!
In morning found out lounge had no food, had to go to front desk to negotiate breakfast, I was nice so I was given buffet coupons, told only benefit for platinum, but exception for me. Buffet restaurant is nice, service was great and buffet was set up nicely, but miserable choices. Asked for made to order omelette. Parking fee was waived $15.
Overall ok, but you do have to ask (beg) for elite benefits.

Poorly run hotel - not abide by Sheraton standards
I totally agree with this assessment. Lounge has been "temporarily closed" for over a year. No attempt to compensate for afternoon food and drinks. Refrigerator has only water, no sodas, etc. Prior to closing the lounge was a hangout for large groups who had food all over the floor with no control by hotel staff. With no "doorkeeper" people brought in large groups of friends to use the facility.
Front desk staff is not well trained. Little ability or knowledge to do more than just go through the motions.
Green choice points were a problem obtaining and management is of very little help.
This is a property that Sheraton needs to audit and evaluate for adherence to standards and quality of training.
Check your bill prior to check-out as there always seem to be some charges that shouldn't be there (internet fees for plat, improper parking charge, etc)

Another Update/ Data Point
Completed a one night stay at Sheraton Atlantic City on Jul 24 2017.
I actually thought the Hotel itself and the Staff were quite nice.
The walk from Self-Parking is a bit long as you end up parking in a garage at the Convention center across the street
I was upgraded to a club room as a SPG Plaitnum member. My main problem with this is stay is that the Lounge does not offer very much.
I have been seeing my share of Sheratons in the Mid-Atlantic region lately, and for the most part I had been impressed with the Lounge offerings.
I had come to expect the Sheraton Standard was Continental Breakfast with a Hot Egg /Bacon or Sausage offering, and Evening Drinks and some warm appetizers.
This hotel DOES provide breakfast vouchers for a full breakfast in the Restaurant, but I don't think that compensates for basically no lounge offerings in the evening except Bottled Water and granola bars.
Also as others have mentioned I think I was charged some erroneous extra fees after checkout.
The shame is I think the hotels only needs to make a few changes to bring the level up to a reasonable standard.
Why have a club level if you don't actually have a club?

Staying here this week to get my last three nights in for Platinum. SNAs awarded for a hospitality suite (or junior suite, as they called it at the front desk). Room is pretty dated but in good condition and plenty of space. Also got my first-ever handwritten welcome note from the GM. All of the staff here have been exceptionally friendly.
The lounge is open! They have a Starbucks coffee machine (coffee and hot water only, no specialty beverages; sugar, S&L, Equal, and shelf-stable CoffeeMate -- no real milk), water/sparkling water spigot, three snack towers (nut/seed/raisin mix, bar mix, Goldfish crackers), and Nutri-Grain bars. While I appreciate it being open, I could just as soon sit in my room. As thomas3633 said five years ago, "why have a club level if you don't actually have a club?"
The breakfast restaurant is closed so the vouchers go towards $15 in the gift shop, which has a pseudo-Starbucks kiosk. Beverages, fruit, cold sandwiches and trays, and hot sandwiches, along with convenience store-style snacks. I got three apples and an Americano, which came out to a little under $14.
So the hotel itself is fine... but as a plat there is much to be desired. While I appreciate the big suite, I probably would have been better off at the Courtyard.
