When you go down to breakfast you might enjoy a little history. It's amazing to me that this actually happened when I was a teen. How quickly the world changes.
Here is an excerpt from the LA Times
[50] years ago . . . a group of women dared to challenge a sexist tradition deeply embedded in the heart of the San Diego Establishment by showing up for lunch at the Grant Grill in the U.S. Grant Hotel. They were described in news stories as radicals and militants who “invaded” the clubby atmosphere of the grill. . .
The women showed up on June 17, 1969. The Grant Grill was the premier power-lunching spot in downtown San Diego back then. Politicians, journalists, lawyers, judges, bankers, businessmen and other movers and shakers went to the grill to swap gossip, drink Scotch and soda, and cut the deals that kept the city humming. . .
Under a policy that had been rigidly enforced for decades, the grill was off limits to women until 3 p.m. Even after that hour, women were allowed only if escorted by men. The males-only policy, and a brass sign on the wall proclaiming it, remained until 1971 when two lawyers--Lynn Schenk, later elected to Congress, and Judith McConnell, now a Superior Court judge--threatened legal action.

Just completed a stay here with the family. Excellent service all around. (This isn’t a critique)but was a bit surprised that, for such a historic hotel, the rooms & room levels went for a modern to postmodernism decor choice. I know other reviews mentioned an issue with street noise - I heard no such noise, though our room also faced the inner courtyard area.
Parking was steep ($50) but on par with the other hotels in the area. I will note that being on the upper end of the gaslamp district, if you are only using parking in the evening (plus all day Sunday’s & holidays), there is plenty of free on street parking available in the vicinity overnight.

Upgraded to Chaffee junior suite for this weekend. Breakfast option is $21 credit for the in-room dining menu.

FWIW, I was there weekend of the 17th and while I can't comment on the breakfast, housekeeping was at Covid levels (i.e., every 3 days) despite pre-Covid pricing.

They are giving $21 a person for breakfast up to 2 ppl per room - so $42 for my wife and I.
This is a little hard to do a juice and an entree with that allotment.
Menu differs a little bit from what’s online so posting here.

I asked the front desk and the receptionist at the restaurant and never really got a straight answer on what happens if we go over the $42. The first 2 days we were never brought a check because we were at 42 on the dot but the last day we definitely went over with one of the juices but still were not brought a check and said we were all set. The front desk explained it was just the total of your breakfast bill - $42 and the restaurant receptionist explained something with the different systems and it’s a little weird but it only generates a receipt for you to sign when it goes over.
A little confusing but that sounds like Marriott. They seemed to say since we don’t have a club lounge that’s why we got the credit, but in Marriott’s terms and conditions it says free breakfast. A 1 beverage 1 entree breakfast option would have been so much simpler.
We did have daily house keeping.
One other minor complaint is that they denied my suite night award request even though there were several different room types available for what I had requested. I messaged the hotel using the chat function in the app the day of to ask about that and they said “Sorry, no suites available” but said they upgraded us from the standard “Superior room” we booked with points to the “Deluxe room”. I then inquired about why they were still selling suites online if they were no longer available? I was then upgraded to a “Legacy Suite” - look at that ;-).
We did enjoy the hotel minus the breakfast and upgrade hoops. For those with families I wouldn’t really consider the legacy suite a true suite with separate rooms, but it is a historic hotel so I get it.

Had a decent stay here recently on FHR rate. The upgrade was one level to a deluxe room even though I'm Marriott Plat, but I didn't ask for a suite and didn't really need one. Breakfast credit was $75.
Great hard product - the deluxe room was beautiful, comfortable, and functional, including a great bed with high end linens and a desk facing the street; bathroom was nice with excellent towels; deluxe rooms appear to face Third or Fourth (I faced Third, and had some train noise) while superior rooms face the courtyard.
There were numerous maintenance problems in the room and extreme wait times for collecting the room service table after dinner (2+ hours and three calls). Room service breakfast was very slow. Food was good, but $62 for a ribeye with minimal sides???

Has anyone had a late checkout here recently?
I just received a pre-arrival email from their GM and it didn't list late checkout as an Ambassador level benefit.
