Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2018)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.

When converting your legacy certificate to a new certificate your prior certificate is cancelled and your new certificate will (in most cases) have an expiration date that is 12 months from the date of issuance (today).

The codes for the New Category partial packages are:
5-night packages
  • OC5=530T/P530 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC6=570T/P570 is now NC4 QP53
  • OC7=610T/P610 is now NC5 QP61 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC8=650T/P650 is now NC5 QP?? (Refund value: 75k)
  • OC9=690T/P690 is now NC6 QP69
7-night packages
  • NC4 QP83 = OC5 830T/P830 (refund value: 45K)
  • NC4 QP87 = OC6 870T/P870 (refund value: 75K)
  • NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)
  • NC5 QP95 = OC8 950T/P950 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC9 990T/P990 (refund value: 165K)
  • NC6 QP99 = OC Tier 1-3 L830 (refund value: 195K)
  • NC7 QL87 = OC Tier 4-5 L870 (refund value: 315K)
Other 7-night packages
  • NC5 QP88 = OC7 P880 (refund value: 135K)
  • NC5 QP92 = OC8 P920 (refund value: 165K)
legend:
NCx = new certificate category
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
OCx = old certificate category
QLxx = post-merger converted partial package (only QL known so far is QL87 for NC7)
xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;

For best practices on converting OC to NC, I’ve copied post # 1181 here. Thank you jameswes!

(Also, never use the word UPGRADE. You must say you want to CONVERT your certs.)

New data point for the new year.

I've read/followed the majority of this thread and now that I have a plan for how to use the travel certificates I made it happen

Last July, I purchased two OC1-5 travel packages. I have an upcoming trip that I wanted to use the certificates to book two rooms at an NC5 hotel.

1) Verified that I had an extra 120,000 MR points in my account (2x60,000 to upgrade from NC4 to NC5)
2) Call the UK Marriott # in the wiki (+44 20 7012 7312). In total, the call took about 25 minutes.
3) Explain that I have a booking I wanted to make, and I wanted to Cancel my two 830T certificates and convert them to two QP91 certificates. I did need to be clear with the rep that I was going to be using additional points from my account to upgrade the certificate.
Canceling two 830T (OC1-5) added 90,000 points (2x45000) to my account
Ordering two QP91 (NC5) subtracted 210,000 points (2x105K) from my account
4) The rep said that their "specialist" wasn't in the office, but she would leave detailed notes and have him do it the next day
5) True to form, the next day (today), I got an emails saying that my old certificates were canceled and new certificates were ordered.
Email clearly states that 830T certs were canceled
Second email clearly states that QP91 certs were ordered and 210K points were redeemed
Email (and account) state that the expiration is one year from today
As typical, App is up-to-date, website doesn't show the updated information yet.
IMPORTANT! Possible Points Advance Implications of March 5 category changes: There’s a (potential) issue with the category changes and Points Advance reservations. Marriott included the following information when they emailed some of us about the upcoming changes: “Points Advance — Members who wish to book a points advance redemption under the current Marriott Rewards and SPG award chart are encouraged to order redemption certificates before March 5 to lock in the rate. On March 5, redemption bookings are subject to the new unified program award chart.” We’ve reached out to Marriott to confirm the practical implications of this verbiage, as it sounds like Points Advance reservations will revert to the new pricing if they don’t have certificates attached prior to March 5. To be on the safe side, if your hotel is increasing in category be sure your TP certificate is attached to the reservation before March 5.

Concerning use of TP for peak or off-peak, see post 2179:

I tried to use the script, but very difficult when people don't even know about the certs. I also tried pleading my case about Bonvoy moving my hotel from Cat 6 to the new Cat 5 (which is actually true). Really frustrating as I wanted to book JW Marriott Phu Quoc, which was moved to NC5 from OC6 (was OC5 in 2017). Then my "backup plan" of Marriott Phuket Nai Yang was also moved to NC5. True, I could have booked before that move, but was hoping to get to JW Marriott PHu Quoc.
I think people have had better results from the UK line. Try there and if they do not know about the certs or if they say no ask to speak with a supervisor to explain your situation, making clear that it is their fault you cannot use your existing cert because they did not provide you with adequate notice of the category changes. It is a bit of a grey area whether or not it is their fault but if you can convince a supervisor that it is their fault they are empowered to help you.

Can you book a 7-night package for someone different than the account holder?

Technically no. Practically you can add them as a second guest to the reservation and hotels generally allow any registered guest to check-in

yes, I have done it a couple of times. Just be very clear to your phone agent which certificate you want to use and confirm with them the correct cert was used before hanging up.

I did did it since the dates I wanted were available but not the full week.

Marriott stole a 7-night certificate from my account and is not responding

Pre-merger I bought a 7 night travel package with United. The airline miles posted.

In March I was staying in Singapore with friends but wanted to switch to a hotel and called up the hotline, wanting to use my 7 night certificate at the Four Points Singapore. The support agent advised me that I could not use the 7 night certificate (due to the hotel being fully booked on nights 6 and 7). He advised me that I could buy a 5 night certificate (with airline miles) on the phone with him instead and he'd happily apply it at the Four Points Singapore for me, checking in the same day.

I then proceeded to purchase a 5 night certificate on the phone with the agent. He applied it to the reservation and gave me a confirmation code which I gave to the hotel upon check-in. I never used/touched my 7 night certificate. Now I don't have either certificate in my account anymore. They took away my old 7 night certificate as well as the new 5-night certificate. I only stayed 5 nights at the Four Points in Singapore.

I initially escalated this on March 15th and this still remains unresolved. This is absolutely unacceptable. I've been resurfacing the support query every two weeks. I am not getting anymore responses from Marriott. This is theft. What are my options here?

This merger has been a complete and absolute ....-show. #bonvoyed

Perhaps your 7-night certificate simply expired due to not being used within a year...

P.S. It's not theft or "stealing". Ranting and raving using that kind of language won't help you find an agent or supervisor willing to fix the problem, if it is indeed Marriott's mix-up.

Did you buy a new 5n package with certificate and air miles and charge you the full package price? Or did they swap out a certificate for residual value and repurchased at residual value? And four points Singapore increased in category so (guessing) if it was a 7n cat 4 converts to a 5n cat 5 as a wash (and if this is the case you got a great agent to swap it out for you)

I'm guessing there's a lot more to this than we're being told......

No success in upgrading OC5 to NC5, agents on UK line taking a hard line. Looks like the good times are over!

I'm wondering whether it could be a simple mistake case of a phone agent having the OP's account open and forgetting to switch accounts when going on to the next call, which happened to be about using a seven night cert.

Unattached certificates can have strange behavior. One of my free night certs somehow attached itself to a points booking weeks after I stayed. The Twitter team restored the certificate for me.

OP I am sorry you are facing this situation, I cannot imagine how frustrated you must be. I would recommend reaching out to the Lurkers here (same team who fixed my issue on Twitter): [email protected]

About 2 more months all the OCs would expire. Note to everyone who still have OCs to convert them to NC before the OCs expire. Hopefully the conversion process by now is known by majority of the reps of each call center and there would not be much of pain to get it done.

Marriott did not steal anything. Points/certificates ectetera are Marriott property. They are just loaning them to you as another form of currency.

But yes yes as others have stated there is a lot more to this than the OP is letting on. Let’s get the full story before drawing conclusions.
