What worked for me is:
  1. "Hi, are you able to see my list of certificates ?" if agent says Yes, proceed to next step;
  2. "You see that I have a P910 right ?" if agent says Yes, proceed to next step;
  3. "I would like to convert my certificate to one of the post-merger certificates, can you cancel the P910 cert and reorder the QPxx certificate ?" Now hope that the agent will feel confident enough to follow your guidance.

It works on the opposite direction as well as getting full cancellation and have the pts refunded to your account. SAME steps.
You can tell whether the rep is willing or not by the first 3 min of conversation. The BAD part is you have no idea whom you would get after the 45 min to an hour on hold listening to the annoying robot messages that the volume could not be lowered.

I would not hold my breadth that we could use those certs on SPG properties when Sept 18 comes, when right now they are not even bookable with regular bookings (both pay and ordinary points) on the Marriott site, and must be done on the Legacy SPG system whch never has the "cert" thing. It will require many codes to add the "cert" feature to SPG legacy system.
The only hope would be they can migrate ALL SPG properties to the Marriott booking platform. Right now for the SPG properties I check. all of them redirect me to the legacy SPG booking engine....

Agreed.... Same thing. They could convert the cert to usable points for the purposes of fixing this issue. That would make some sense and likely wouldn't require a ton of work. Of course... my trip is in mid October so I still have time but as it's the only Cat 4 Starwood and not a single Marriott hotel in the entire area (EZE), I'm outta luck if it sells out in the meantime.

The only way for you is to secure the SPG booking with ACTUAL Points as the SPG properties do not allow Point Advance booking. I tried to book a 5th night free for W Brisbane on the Marriott site. it told me I did not have enough points (just short of below 200 pts for the full amount) and then redirect me to SPG site to give me the option to buy points - PATHETIC.

I could book the property from the SPG site with full point value but my status on SPG site is only Plat while on the Marriott site it is PP. I am afraid if I book from the SPG site I will self-downgrade myself!

Whoever still defends Marriott when now almost 3 weeks after the D-day we still have myriad issues not fixed needs to have their heads re-examined. On top of that, it is dead silent on the front of Travel Package which is where Marriott is determined to fleece the customers by down-match the categories versus up-match. The whole goal is to take as much point liability off the books while using the least possible cost to do so by giving the customers the least valuable hotel stays possible.

Oh. for the 5th night free booking, on SPG site it shows the AVG pts per night incl the 5th night free in the calculation so each night shows pt charge. The same type of booking on Marriott site it shows the regular rate with the total of only 4 nights charged, with 1st night being free in the details, versus the 5th night.

That is how we get when the IT is outsourced to China to do it by piece meal fashion.

Totally agree, that's why I'm just trying to get my three cancelled. I wanted to use them at an SPG property, but I can't have a million points tied up holding points reservations indefinitely on the off chance they will one day be able to figure out how to apply them to SPG reservations. Pretty frustrating, but if I can cancel them, I'd rather take the 5 nights I can definitely book now with the points refund vs. the potential to get 7 nights with the certificate.

you definitely can cancel the certs. I already canceled one.

Just follow the steps outlined by Mastergeek, without reordering. That was how I canceled mine.

This statement couldn’t be more true. Coming from the SPG side of things I would always chuckle at the back and forth banter between Marriott & Sheraton fans. I now can’t fathom how the Marriott program was ever superior to Starwood’s program. I only do about 60 to 70 nights a year but to me that’s a lot. If my business isn’t worth it to Marriott ill save my company money and start staying at another brand.

Has anyone successfully redeemed at pre-merger marriott 7-night travel package certificate at a SPG property? The SPG agents seem unable to use those certificates. I've gotten a certificate converted to the "new" code and am still not having any luck.

I believe a Cat 6 is mapping to a Cat 1-4 with possible 30k pt refund. And yes, I believe it will have to convert to new TP first...just YMMV on if they can do it yet...

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a 'full points refund'. I have 2 Cat 1-5 (Legacy) now Cat 1-4 certificates. What is the full points refund? The only number I've seen floated around is 45,000 which is the residual amount from canceling one of these certificates.

Was this a 7 night or 5 night upgrade? Also, what category were you moving from or moving to?

From the wiki above:
NC5 QP91 = OC7 910T/P910 (refund value: 105K)

It was a 7 night OC7 NC5 cert. I stayed in the same category but I felt the agent could/would let me convert to an NC6 package if I wanted. However NC5 certs are enough for my travel plans so I didn't wanna spend 60K for each NC incremental upgrade

bobby212345 Sep 7, 2018 8:27 am

I tried to order a qp91 but instead they ordered a qp89 for 125k each

5-night packages
  • OC5 530T/P530 = NC4 QP53 (to be confirmed)

7-night packages
  • OC5 830T/P830 = NC4 QP83 (refund value: 45K)
  • OC6 870T/P870 = NC4 QP87 (refund value: 75K)
  • OC7 910T/P910 = NC5 QP91 (refund value: 105K)
  • OC8 950T/P950 = NC5 QP95 (refund value: 135K)

Other 7-night packages
  • OC7 P880 = NC5 QP88 (refund value: 135K)
  • OC8 P920 = NC5 QP92 (refund value: 165K)

xx0T = initial package;
Pxx0 = partial package;
QPxx = post-merger converted partial package
