Stayed here this past weekend for a night as I moved my flight to the next day.

(Ambassador)

- Checked us in early without worry and I literally booked the room through the app an hour prior to getting there. Got my booked room (12) which is a Carlton Hill/Terrace Garden View. Nice room except no USB ports anywhere so if you only have one travel adapter plan for that if you want to plug in usb devices while having your laptop or something plugged in also. This room is next to some sort of condenser/hvac unit room and occasionally you hear it purge/charge up. I'd say it happened probably 5-6 times throughout our day stay, Didn't wake me up at night so not sure but during the day it can definitely pause a conversation.

- The service there is outstanding, The Front desk agent upon check-in asked if there was anything he could do to help and I asked for just a place to eat that might play the F1 race later on in the night and he called a few places to confirm and gave me places. He also later sent a thank you note and macrons or w/e. Later the night agent I asked if Ubers or taxi's were hard to come by and he said he'd order a taxi for me for 4AM as needed and call up to make sure im up and at 3:55AM I came downstairs and he was already following up with the Taxi company and made sure they showed up promptly and escorted us out. Had our receipt for our stay already printed for us as well.

- Bar is open, nice open space with a cool firepit inside. As of this post they are a little light on liquors partly because we drank a-lot and they are having supply issues apparently related to the truck driver shortage there. We were given two drink coupons for the bar upon check-in which was nice as the restaurant is closed.

Note: Construction is still going on and will be for quite some time on the street, It was sunday so I can't comment if the noise is bad.

Does anyone have an email for the Glasshouse? I noticed a minor issue with a reservation this July during the Open and since it was made before the new redemption tiers and I don't want to lose the rate. Thanks in advance!

I had an excellent stay at the Glasshouse last fall as a "staycation" and I see what you mean about the lack of privacy but loved the softer aspects of the service with the drink chits, excellent breakfast choices, and location to the Playhouse and Down the Hatch (Poutine Fries with Haggis Yummmm)!

I experienced both a lack of privacy and decent service when I last stayed. The Sheraton is better but even that has gone downhill over the last year or two. The Kimpton Charlotte Square was considerably superior in April and had a much nicer vibe.

The Sheraton Grand is my usual go-to for Edinburgh and they gave me a lovely bottle of G.H. Mumm in December but when I stayed in January I didn't get elite recognition so it was a bit strange to say but ye ken how er goes.

I had some really great prior stays at the Sheraton where they went above and beyond to provide great service and elite benefits. But the last couple of visits have been disappointing. The time before last, someone from housekeeping put some wine and snacks in our room and then started cleaning it around 2pm - but I had 4pm check out. The time after that, the spa and lounge were awful zoos full of the worst imaginable clientele.

Just completed a nice stay at The Glasshouse - the property is really unique and wonderful and the staff are excellent, there were just a couple of things that bugged:
  • I am not sure if it is the doors or the walls to the hall that are poorly insulated, but you could hear hall noise when people walked by.
  • Our toilet was like a vacuum airplane toilet and EXTREMELY loud when you flushed - it sounded like something was being ejected into space.
  • The continental breakfast was very disappointing, with very limited options. Sure, you could buy up to a more substantial meal, but the selection seemed very cheap. That being said, the staff in the breakfast room were extraordinary.
As everyone has said - the construction in front makes traffic a nightmare. The taxi driver from the airport said it was planned to be done by the end of summer but his guess (and from the look of things) it was going to be longer than that - I would guess another six months to a year.

That also summarizes my experience at The Glasshouse and I look forward to staying there again however the construction is a nightmare and it is a very noisy area as well.

I'm back in Edinburgh this weekend and staying at the Sheraton Grand.

Any thoughts on the terrace suite versus lady Glenorchy suite here? Hard to tell from photos if the Lady G is a considerable step up...

Terrace Suites face the Terrace so slightly less privacy but I haven't stayed in the Lady Glenorchy suite so it'd be hard for me to comment on.

No clue about the suites. There were lots of them. Some had terraces or large balconies overlooking the construction out front. We were in a a Calton Hill Garden Access room and although you have a wall of windows we didn't feel a lack of privacy. It was quiet. There's a row of arbor vitae type shrubs so any garden terrace events don't see you. No issues with neighbors either. Since we were there in July I was grateful for the outdoor space. That said, the room was a bit rundown and in need of TLC and repairs. Also the toilets flushed like those on a cruise ship! Loud. Staff were are friendly and helpful. Enjoy your stay there.

Would a recent guest have an update on the exterior construction perhaps? Looking to book early Q2 next year and hoping the tram line (or whatever it is) will be squared away by then.

I live a few minutes walk away. The work is still on now, but making progress. It has already finished a little further down from the hotel. I am not sure of the current expected finish date, but I would not be worried about booking for next year.

Being an old city, there is always plenty of work ongoing somewhere nearby!
