So does that mean they would likely be contacting Amex Serve to note the issue so that Serve can deduct the funds from my account and send them back to the store? I figured my Serve balance would eventually drop to rebalance things, but not sure. I'm hoping I don't have to (i) contact Serve about this or (ii) go back to the store.

I'm kind of in a holding pattern at the moment. I still have the VGC here with the $500 balance, and I have the Serve card. But I'm hesitant to unload Serve or close the Serve account if the balance is going to be deducted.

If it was ran as a cash transaction, paper records would show that you paid cash. The responsibility for the missing cash would fall on the clerk. I'm not saying that's what happened, but it's one possibility. Do you know the name of the clerk? You could call the store to see if they were short 500 on the day you made the attempt. This way if something more comes of it, it will at least look like you tried to make it right.

No, I don't believe so. It just said "Authorizing. Please wait" for a long time, and then went to a "timed out" message. Looked like nothing had happened so I asked if we need to start it all over again, and the manager (who was overseeing the transaction) said that it looked like the funds were on my Serve card and asked me to check and confirm. I checked email and app and said that the funds were on there. He said great, and I was on my way. Wasn't until I was outside that I decided to check the VGC balance and saw that it had been returned to me.

I was considering calling or visiting to ensure that it is all balanced out. But I was unsure how to actually address it without having to show them my "debit card" or have to use that VGC again. I mean, do I offer to bring $500 cash and hand it to them? Because that wouldn't be unfair of course, if I in fact have and get to keep the $500 in my Serve account.

Ended up calling the store and spoke with manager. She said its possible that the deduction from the debit card could be delayed due to the system time out issue. I told her that, if it came up unbalanced for whatever reason, to just give me a call and I'd just swing by and balance it out with cash. She was very appreciative and said she would reach out if needed.

I feel better having called to discuss. This way, they will hopefully contact me without the need to get Serve involved. Plus, honesty is the best policy anyway.

You did the right thing. Besides, they may never call and then at least you won't have to feel guilty about the 500.

to test for possible shutdown, try doing online load and if your acct isn't blocked, it is in good standing.

I know this trick but don't know what I should expect really. I clicked add fund and the website asked me if you want to enroll DD or link a debit card. Everything looks fine to me.

Link a debit card as prompted and try loading from it.
