If you buy GCs when they are not on promotion, you get no gas points. Zero, Zero, Zero. NOT 1X.

Current GC Promotion: None (so you will get zero gas points for buying Amex, Visa, or MC gift cards)

Stop & Shop (S&S) and Giant Food Stores (Giant) offer points for purchases which can be redeemed for discounts off gas purchases at select gas stations. The rules are different depending on whether you shop at S&S or Giant and within the Giant chain, the rules vary by your location.

Feel free to update this Wiki or suggest improvements. The goal is to help all of us spend less on gas!

IMPORTANT: Giant Food Stores, LLC and Giant of Maryland, LLC are different chains and the rules are different for redemption! For a great explanation of why they are different read Post #839.

Current S&S promo: none

Current Giant (PA) promo: 2X points on AMEX ends 12/10

Current Giant (NoVA, DC, MD) promo: none

Past S&S promos (will help track the cycle of when these bonuses start and end):

10/16/15 - 10/22/15 2x for VGC purchase
12/4/15 - 12/10/15 2x for AMEX GC purchase

Past Giant (NoVA, DC, MD) promos (will help track the cycle of when these bonuses start and end):

12/4/15 - 12/10/15 2x for AMEX GC purchase

FAQs

You need to obtain a Rewards card at the Customer Service desk before you can start getting gas rewards.

Cards that work are listed in the current circular. They do change occasionally. VISA and MC from Metabank or US Bank for $20-$500 (plus $5.95 fee) work. For GCs, if it meets the previous requirements, the packaging (blue, silver, birthday cake, etc.) doesn't matter! Check the issuing bank.

S&S and Giant (NoVA, DC, MD) allows you to redeem gas points only up to $2.20/gallon and points expire after 30 days. Giant PA can redeem full amount.

Points earned in one program cannot be used in another program, BUT there are reports that you can call Customer Service and x-fer points to the other programs. See post #512

S&S allows you to fill up more than once per day.

Giant may ask for your name and driver's license to write in a book if you make a certain level of purchases. Some stores it is for >$2k and some for $5k. YMMV.

You can access your Giant Gas Rewards online using the link at the top of the thread.

Most people report they can buy a single $500 MC or VISA at any register without an issue. Generally, if you spend more than $1,000 a manager will be required to come over to the register with a key. It's not been reported that this is an issue, just to be aware if the register is busy. You can go checkout at Customer Service to avoid this hassle.

Giant Eagle (Pittsburgh area) is not the same as Giant Food Stores and this deal doesn't work.

If you have more points than are required for your redemption they will remain in your account until they expire. i.e. If you have 10,000 points and you redeem 2,200 for a fillup, you will have 7,800 points left in your account.

If your bonus card is not scanned with your gift card purchase because of a system or cashier mistake, you can get the points manually added at the cust. svc desk at your local store. Show your receipt, and the employee may need reference to the gift card promo in the Giant sales flyer. It generally takes manually added points 24 hrs to post to your account.
[*]How do gas rewards work when gas is less than $2.20 (based on NoVA Shell stations)?

Giant deducts 2200 points from your account (usually) wishing 24 hours of your gas purchase. In the next 24-48 hours, Giant credits your account for the different between the actual gas price reduction and the 2209 points. Example: 1.999 gas has recently required (late Dec 2015/Jan 2016) paying $0.019 per gallon. Giant deducts 2200 points and then credits 220 ( 2.20 - 1.98; gas price adjusts down to account for the price you paid). The credited points get a new 30 days from starting in the credit date. This has been the case at three different Shell stations in NoVA using inside and pay at the pump. YMMV.

I have no specific information but if you're talking Giant of MD, I think we can be 99% certain they are. For gift card purposes, these two store names are essentially identical.

whats the big deal? to save $2 a gal you need 2 GCs @ $5.95 or there goes $12 in savings. The cheapest Shell near me are .20 - .30 more per gal then Costco so if Im lucky Id save $15 tops, but Id have to reduce that by having to drive around to find the GCs as many SnS have gotten rid of the $20-500 GCs and have $50 GCs as the max in my area. end result for me would be spending a couple of hrs at a min to save $15

Congrads to those who wont have to spend near the amount of time Id have to. It was a much better outcome when it was 3x or 5x. Then being Overseas for over 2 weeks in April greatly reduces the amount of gas Id need during the 30 days before the pts expire. End result wont go out of my way to get the GCs but will get 4 (max) if I happen to be passing by a SnS w/o going out of my way

So what you are saying is that for your specific circumstances this deal isn't worth it.

Thanks for sharing

I completely agree. On top of that, I also have to pay 38% interest on my AMEX blue cash credit card that will completely wipe out any saving I get from buying those darn cards.

Move along, nothing to see here...

Never said that , if anything I said the complete opposite by saying Congrads to those it will work for.

I simply said @ 2x and the SnS's that dont require me to go over a toll bridge dont carry the $20-500 GCs. So with a couple of trips up coming that will have me out of town for > 2 weeks and with a tank almost full already it doesnt pay for me to play this round. Costco is $1.89 a gal the Shell was $2.23 end result FOR ME if I went over the bridge to get the GCs would amount to < $15 savings for afull tank of gas. If that amount in savings is up your alley great, it doesnt work for me especially as it will be snowing tomorrow and the time I need to invest doesnt justify the results

I know folks that drive miles out of their way to save 4 cents a gal on gas they probably use up the savings plus driving back and forth, but go convince them of that all they know is they saved a buck going to the other station

Was just told that my savings would be $4 less since I could pay $3.95 per $500 GC instead of $5.95. Im positive there are many folks that @ 2x it works for them , not having to drive all around to find a SnS that actually carrys the $20-500s , no tolls to get there , within a short distance from home or work = not having to drive way out of your way and use up alot of gas , having a # of cars to fill up, and being around most of the 30 days before the pts expire. If that applied to me as well I would have done this as well but even then it would cost me $16+ to fill the tank out of pocket and not $0

Not sure the equation is properly stated. Assume $2.50 a gallon for gas, so three $500 GCs will get you a free fill up. True, those $1500 in GCs will cost you $15 in activation fees, but I doubt anybody is buying them without a credit card that pays some type of reward, be it miles or cashback. Me, I use at least a Capital One Spark card that pays 2% CB (though I also have a TD Bank 5% card). Assuming a 16 gallon fill-up that is worth $40, benefit for me is $40-15+$30 = $55, better than 3% return. If I use my TD card, the benefit jumps up to $100 in value.

Although this is not nearly as good as previously deals, it is still profitable depending on how much you drive.

In my house we have two cars and use at least 35 gallons a week, here is how it should break down over 4 weeks:

22 $500 Gift cards at 5.95 fee total of 130.9 in fees

4 x fill ups in car one at 15 gallons
10 x fill ups in car two at 10 gallons
1 x fill up of gas cans at 17 gallons

10 Total fill up days

Total of 177 Gallons saving $2.10(considering shell is about 10 cents more expensive) equaling 371.7 subtracting 130.9 for the fees. This profits/saves me about $240 plus 66k(valued at ~$300) Hilton points for an upcoming trip

You're correct on the dollar value, but your "3% return" needs work. Return on what? You're not investing anything, except your time. You can deduct additional costs if you want, for MO purchases, etc. But ultimately your "percentage" return is infinite/meaningless, it's really dollars or dollars per hour.

I don't completely disagree with your point. It's 3% return on dollars spent for GCs. Not a completely useful number, but it allows one to compare the return when comparing with using the same CC to, for instance, purchase AGCs through a portal. Time ends up being approximate at best because I never know exactly how long it is going to take to liquidate, based on traffic, the line at the WM MC, whether the MO machine is working, etc., but if I assume the time to liquidate is going to be the same no matter where I get my GCs, the amount I am making depending on how many I am buying becomes a more useful metric.

Is there a known benefit for pursuing this later in the week? If I buy now, the rewards will have to be used by the end of April. If I wait near the end of the month can I earn rewards that won't expire until the end of May?

Depends upon which grocery chain you're talking about.

ABE in your ID tells me youre in Pa and will buy them at Giant. Where I live its SnS and we have 30 days to use 'em or lose 'em, with a max of 2200 pts per fill up which in NJ will mean maybe a $.05 a gal needs to be paid if its below $2.20 a gal its free

if I would buy them tomorrow @ SnS Id have to 4/19 to use them up, if I buy them over different days it prolongs it but only to 4/25 at the max. Again thats at SnS, Giant I believe has a different set of rules, even thou they are the same company. And AFAIK you cant use the shoppers card from 1 to buy at the other so Id assume you cant cash out a SnS card at a Giant gas pump
