While visiting family in NY (not in NYC) I tried to buy a OV for $500 at a CVS that I used multiple times over the summer. Was told that the OV's are cash only (after he tried scanning the card) and the cashier confirmed with the 2 other cashiers that were nearby. I had some other small items in the purchase as well.
I'll try another one of the CVS' that I've used before and hope that they haven't all been hard-coded. |
Bought 4 OVs in one transaction today. No issues.

The CVS manager asks me about what's going on with these gift cards. I tell him that I'm paying tuition fee with Gift cards. He goes, can't you pay it with FB's, I tell him the College won't take credit cards. So he says, oh I see and then he let me buy the 4 VGCs. THe college was off the cuff thing, came to my mind. Later on I realized, he could have asked me, if you can't pay fee with FBs then how are you able to pay it with Vanilla. Fortunately he didn't think of it.
Anyone has a better story to tell if they ask you why are you purchasing so many gift cards? not only 4 in one transaction but on successive days. Small store would know you personally. |

The truth. Tell them it's for miles; the only people who work at CVS and understand credit card rewards are the Pharm-Ds. |
I tell them it's for the miles as well, most just blow it off and make a comment about wanting to travel more.

I just tell them its for miles. Actually I told the CVS cashier that she was like "Wow that's awesome!" Every time I see her now, she's super nice and helpful!

Three general types of people: 1. You're suspicious and I'm a volunteer sheriff like Dwight Schrute!! 2. I don't care what you're doing - the computer allows it 3. Haha, that's pretty clever! It really works? Neat! |

It really works? Neat! I do feel its better to be honest. A side note, I also told my credit union what I do (after they asked why I have so many money orders) and they had the same reaction: "Wow that's cool!" Every time I come in, I'm the "miles guy" hahaha. |

Did you elaborate it in details or just give them little bits and pieces? Once you tell them it is for miles, they are not going to be be nosy and would want to know how exactly you do it.

It really works? Neat! It's really getting ridiculous. The cards are not gift cards. They are prepaid Visa cards that are accepting anywhere that Visa is. It says this right in the terms and conditions. To not accept them is mostly likely a violation of their merchant agreement. They simply say gift on the front because people often give them as gifts. |
