Regarding chains that have existing forums such as Starwood, IHG, Marriott, etc., those hotels can be noted here if they are a top luxury hotel in a given market. However further discussion should be referred to the master thread for that hotel in the proper forum.

Rough idea
A forum to discuss and debate the very top rung of luxury hotels around the world - be they small inns, converted palaces, plush large city hotels or modern beach resorts - if they're the VERY best and a genuine contender for the top 100 in the world then discuss them here

I am vehemently opposed to including examples in the form of names of hotels or chains. The problem with doing so automatically prejudices someone in terms of what the forum is "supposed to" be.
That is why I like the brand-agnostic approach.
I also like the approach by Kettering Northants QC ^, which could serve this forum quite well with a bit of editing.

In the other example, the wording "VERY best" and "genuine contender for the top 100 in the world" is a bit exaggerated.

Kettering Northants QC said "rough idea"
bottom line it includes description, while the others dont really
description (his has no examples) could be combined with examples

I'm with the small group that would prefer not to see specific brands 'promoted'. Even some of the brands that are currently listed have less than luxiourious outposts - the Excelsior, Hong Kong?
I have no vested interest in promoting one brand over another.

It features prominently on their website and in the introduction to the hotel (I haven't scoured every page) it makes no mention of it being a 4 star hotel.

Names can be confusing Isn't the Ritz Carlton Chicago a Four Seasons Hotel?

I don't post here often but I find the information provided here invaluable. It seems to me that the regular contributors to this forum already do an excellent job determining what defines a luxury hotel. One issue of concern to me is the geographical approach. I am not sure it is wise to look for the "best" properties in a given market and automatically categorize them as luxury because some places don't have any hotels that would qualify.

Interested in the very best luxury hotels around the world? Small inns, converted palaces, plush large city hotels or modern beach resorts - if they're genuine contenders for the top 100 in the world then discuss them here
