Last time I flew SAS and they get a bus gate way over by Terminal 2. So we were dropped at B gates Schengen side, so had to take the tunnel. Then I took the elevator up (above A14) up to Z. Here there was nobody doing secondary checks and I couldn't really see where they could do it. They had a L3 MMwave scanner for the secondary, which I refused.
Staying on topic, beware of SAS connection time to A or Z because it's a long bus ride and then you have to walk the tunnel. It's good for non-Schengen B connections. With LH metal on the same route then you wind up at an A bus gate.

Hello
First of all thank you for the informative post on transferring at Frankfurt Airport and the link to the Transfer Guide
And yes "follow the signs" does seem to make sense
That was until I read about sky lines, tunnels, buses
I realize that flights don't always arrive at the same gate, least I don't think they do
I will be flying from South Africa (Non-Schengen) this Sunday Evening arriving in Frankfurt just before 6am Monday Morning
I was wondering if anyone could provide me with information as to the likely gate of arrival and what I will be required to do, which gates to go, bus to catch ( I hope I don't need to do this) in order to catch my connecting flight to Graz, Austria at 08:35am
All I know to date is that I arrive in Terminal 1 and depart from Terminal 1. Would be nice to know if I need to catch a bus or walk to my depature to Graz, what sort of checks I will go through and how much time I need to allow myself. Coming from South Africa our terminals at O.R Tambo are not that big a can be easily walked in say 10 minutes
Thanks

You can check gate of arrival yourself for recent flights on lh.com. It looks like it typically arrives in Z, which means that you have an easy connection but you need to do both security (your origin is "unclean") and immigration before going downstairs to A Schengen gates. It is likely that you will get a bus gate for your flight to Graz.
If it arrived in B or C then you would also have a long walk. But 2.5 hours is plenty for any scenario.

Assuming you will be on LH573 rather than SA260, your flight is likely to arrive at a Z gate. From your arrival gate you will have to go to the central transfer area where you clear security, then go two levels down and go through passport control. The departure gate for GRZ is usually a bus gate either downstairs in A (A6-10) or in B (through the tunnel between A15-17) or higher A (lower level of Z pier where you arrive). Just check one of the many departure boards you will find throughout the terminal and follow the signs. Not sure which class you will be travelling or if you have access to a lounge, but don't go to the gate area too early if the flight is departing from A6-10 or B1-18.

Thanks for the welcome and the info
I see on my online itinerary that as it stands my flight to Gras departs from gate A09 which as far as I can tell on the map is Level 3?

Departure gates, especially of shorthaul flights, could vary from what was previously announced.

Hi
I have downloaded an app for frankfurt airport from google play
It has a map section which looks like you can choose the level you want to see and then it can also locate you and place you on the map
Is this the app you are talking about?
Thanks

You can also simulate your route from say Z66A (choose Arrivals pier Z58-69) to gate A09. One major fault I have found is the app does not show where passport control is located. However, its map shows where departure gates are located.

just to update. My daughter flew from mia-fra-lhr arriving this morning. Her flights all took off on time. She said the walk was the longest ever in Frankfurt (she had an hour between flights). She said she only got to the gate with 15 minutes to spare and she was walking fast, but that it was just so far between gates/terminals. She didn't have time to get a bite or anything. She also said she had to clear Customs in Heathrow.
She was going to UK to see the Dophins, I hope they win. I also hope she has an easier time getting to Rome next Saturday when I'll meet up with her.

For her LHR-FRA-FCO flight, she will have to go through passport control in FRA. She should check in at T2 in LHR rather than T1 where she arrived today since LH is moving to T2 on Wednesday.
