I saw the 3PM flight but ANA said LH wouldn't confirm it for some odd reasons. If I asked for a downgrade to Y, then ANA will treat it as ticket reissuance as opposed to mere flight time change. I will call again later this evening hoping to get a different ANA phone agent who will be kind enough for me to change to the 3PM flight, otherwise, I will be at LH's mercy at the airport. I understand the standby policy is a lot more stringent in Europe - I just hope LH would be accommodating for such a minor change on a short domestic flight due to circumstances outside of my control.

I wish you all the luck in your endeavor.
I am in a similar situation: trying to change a domestic segment in C (in the niddle of an itinerary) to an earlier flight between MUC and FRA ( there is a flight every hour).
I used miles and more miles and it is a mix C and F award.
I called the SEN line twice and got two different answers to my request
1. first call: not possible to move the time of the flight as this segment is part of a longer trip (?) and changing it would have resulted in changing all the booking (???). I hung up
2. second call: yes, segment can be changed against seat availability ( there is space) and a 60 USD change fee per ticket. No thanks - I am still upset for the 1,000 USD "taxes" each of my two "awards" and I did not see fit to shell out another 120USD for this change.
( and slightly OT but not too much - one would think that - given availability a "courtesy" change to an earlier C flight would help LH keep their SEN happy - alas not the case)
ahem - rant mode off.
This said, not it is on to ANA to confirm you space - otherwise I see it as being a hit or miss depending who will you face at the airport - prepare yourself for a negative answer.....

You might get that one person that is willing to bend the rules, but it's extremely rare. No use in getting your hopes up (or even being disappointed) when it's done differently then you are used to.

Your flight is nicely oversold, so just ask nicely at the gate if all fails.

Update
Given the overwhelming consensus from members of this forum, I chose not to play airport lotto despite the fact that my original flight may be overbooked. I called ANA in Japan, whose customer service is above and beyond what can be expected from any call center in the U.S., I was able to change my flight to LH 026 in business class, which leaves at 17h30 instead. The sticking issue apparently, was the fact that ANA normally doesn't allow partner award change for departure less than 4 days. That was why the U.S. call center could see availability but chose not to confirm the change, instead, blamed it on LH. The Japan based agent explained that to me but I was able to frame my request such that she could take it up with a supervisor and obtained an authorization to override. I am happy with the change and I didn't have to pay any fees.
Thanks again for everyone for providing me with timely and accurate info so that I can quickly rule out pleading with LH at the airport as an option. ^

8hr connection in MUC, chances of standby for earlier flight?
Looking to fly ORD-MUC-(Moscow) with luggage and the cheapest fare comes back with a 8h connection.
I know some airlines are pretty open to accommodating pax on previous services on a standby basis. Is LH one of these airlines, i.e. will they consider putting me on one of the numerous Moscow-bound flights that leave earlier in the day?
A3*G, if that helps.
Thanks!

Hi idlingbye,
sorry to say, LH effectively has zero tolerance now regarding bending of fare rules. They won't even consider a friendly request if the flight is wide open. Strictly by the book for now. Of course, if the cheapest fare has flexibility, this doesn't apply - but I suppose you would not be posting here then.
Are your flight options only from LH's website or have you already tried booking through a TA (or even LH's hotline)?

Hi txl,
Thanks for your reply -- I thought as much. I've been poking around with matrix and it looks like the only option to get the booking in the right fare code is that nasty 8h connection. Does the hotline and/or TA's have some room for maneuvering?

Yes, they definitely should! Matrix is a great tool but a good TA's skills should take you a lot further. Where will you be crediting the miles? Booking with a TA is the best opportunity to choose your preferred booking class - sometimes the price difference between a fare that will award you 50% of the flown miles and one that gives you 100% is very low...
