Not a dumb question at all. However in my limited experience with LH, they do not allow stand-by. North American airlines seem to allow this, while European airlines (such as BA) do not, unfortunately.

Moving this to the LH forum where the locals there may have the answer.

I would say you are not very much in luck with this... on the other hand it's an "I" class ticket which is pretty flexible !

Last week in ZRH the LX lady just changed me onto an earlier flight and that it was

Gotta love LX

Yes, it´s also my experience, that LX is often willing to change to an earlier flight than LH.

Where does it state that?

And if it was an I class booking then it is definite NO. As it is a UA ticket, hence MP rules apply, and MP rules state that for a *A award, there are absolutely no changes after travel commenced (with the exception of UA segments trailing the last *A partner segment).

"I" class is pretty flexible because they often have availability open, while S,T and the like are usually gone on departure day !

Sure the fare rules are there... but if the agent doesnt care like in my case the better it is

My experience too. The only time LH will book you onto an earlier flight is if it helps them meaning they are oversold on the later flight that you are originally booked on. Only in those cases have I been offered to go onto an earlier flight without reboking fee or anything like that.

The OP is riding W ... many stated before.

But even before the edit, there was no beep of 'I' class.
