Did the Japanese side of the allocations get announced already? I can't remember either way at the moment.

Do you expect JL to have a bigger share on the Japanese side? They will be lucky to get an even split.

No, I just can't remember if those were announced.

I think the LAS denial was unfortunate. A new unserved destination and DOT seems to ignore possibilities of open jaw trips. And if it didn't work, the slot would revert for reassignment after 90 days of dormancy. Meanwhile the carrier that has pulled back from Japanese operations gets rewarded with even more slots.

Wonder if AA will ever try to bring back JFK-NRT. Or even HND-NRT. I took AA168 over ten years ago when starting college in the US. Nostalgic flight.

Seems questionable. DL can't make the route work despite having a much larger operation at JFK. But UA is going to 2x daily EWR-TYO so they must have figured something out.

Those very long flights are expensive to operate and the JFK market generally has competitive pricing compared to DL's hubs.

Big enough feed to support it on either end? UA/NH are already operating 3x NYC-TYO and JAL is operating 2x. Not much room left for DL which doesn't have anything at the other end anymore & no local JV partner.

New Haneda Slots

DOT announced new slots for US carriers to Haneda. Anyone know what the status is for JAL and other Japanese carriers. Will they be getting additional slots. Has this been announced.

it matters because the US flights are feeding traffic and also contribute to the JV as a whole. More JL profits means more investments

Japanese carriers should also get 12 new slot pairs for HND-US routes, but the breakdown has not yet been announced as far as I can tell. There is a parallel process going on at the moment to re-allocate all of the domestic slots at HND -- that may be slowing things down.

JL did have NRT-LAS-LAX-NRT in 1998, but it lasted only about a year or two. LAS is a leisure destination, and LAS is also a large convention destination but large conventions are scheduled two to three years in advance. Attendees of conventions knows the date far in advance and not many convention attendees buy last minute expensive air tickets like some business travelers do.

JL NRT-LAS service coincided with entire Vegas casinos focusing attracting visitors from Japan. Vegas casinos hired a lot of Japanese speakers, established a lot of vendors for Japan visitors, some Japanese restaurants in casinos even opened in mornings to serve Japanese breakfast. But turned out that Japanese are not gambler, they did not gamble a lot. Language barrier but even with Japanese speaker assisting them table games, slot machines, video pokers, etc. were not everyday thing for Japanese and most felt intimidated. Vegas experiment for Japanese visitors lasted for a year or two and Vegas decided to move onto focus on other stuff.

NW started NRT-LAS same time but also lasted about a year. LAS waived landing fee for first year for flights from Japan but after that has expired both JL and NW decided not to continue LAS flight.

Seems like JAL wants to add at least one HNL flight out of HND based on this comment by one of its executives:

羽田空港の国際線発着枠拡大に関連し、「羽田からハワイに飛ばすことも一つの大きな選択肢になってくる」と 述べた。
