Do they open these seats for selection at any point before departure?

Nominally at OLCI, although there may be some seats held back for airport control.

You might keep checking a few days before OLCI as well. There are reports of coach restricted fares getting seat selection a week or so before OLCI officially opens selection for those type of fares.

This is good info. Thank you.

FYI - if you have a single digit flight number you need to add a leading '0' (zero) on JAL's website. Otherwise it won't find your record to let you assign seats, etc. This is truly piss poor programming in 2019. Flight number 1 requires 01. Also, I've added to the Wiki the leading zero and the fact that AA awards on JL metal can be assigned seats via the JL website.

Hi, my JAL-operated flight is booked from AA with AA flight numbers. I can't find the itin on JAL.com under "manage reservations" using JAL PNR and flight #. Is this normal?

Not unusual. Do you have a middle name included in the booking?

kmandrew Dec 2, 2019 4:23 pm

How are the 3 middle seats in J? I’m booked ORD-HND then HND-DFW - thinking 8 hours talking to my wife might be a bit much, maybe pawn her off for a bit to the passenger on the other side?

The passenger on the other side will raise the privacy partition, and there will be no option for conversation. You can do the same :D

I have an upcoming J itinerary with some AA-marketed, JAL-operated segments in the middle of it.
  • JAL said to call AA, so I did and booked seats. AA.com shows them.
  • I noticed on ExpertFlyer that those seats are still...open.
  • I call JAL, who patches in an AA agent in a 3-way call. AA says we have seats. JAL agent says we do not (but refuses to help). The JAL agent asks the AA agent to drop off of the call and then proceeded to bad mouth AA for not being "helpful" ( codeshares are a mess, but *maybe* JAL could be a little more helpful here).
I have not been able to figure out how to take my AA-provided JAL confirmation number to manage my booking (using any flight segment, marketed or operating flight number, or combinations of pax names).

Is there a way for me to get AA's computers to push the seat assignment request again to JAL? As far as I'm concerned, this is an atrocious experience for paid J (plus OWE).

It is a mess between AA and JAL. I a quite sure that if the JAL agents had the ability to help, they would. I am not an experton connections between Sabre and Amadeus in general, nor AA and JAL in specific, but it does not seem very smooth.

Out of curiousity, does any one have experience with AA/BA codeshares? That should be the same system bridge.

Call JL, give then the JL flight number (not the AA codeshare flight number), date of travel and your name. Ask them to pull up file. Once that happens, ask them for the "Amadeus Record Locator".

You can then use it to manage your booking on the JL website.

Is the Amadeus Record Locator for JAL different from the one that AA gives us? I called AA to ask for the JAL PNR. It does not work on the JAL website but it works on checkmytrip.com. I have tried every permutation of my name and JL/AA number to log into the JAL website without success.

If you booked a pure JL flight number (eg. JL 123) via AA, you can get the JL (Amadeus) record locator simply by asking the AAgent on the phone.

If you are booked on an AA codeshre flight number (eg. AA8123 operated by JL), nothing will show in AA's system. As such, you will have to ask JL for the actual Amadeus record locator by telling them "I am booked on JL 123 [you will need to give them the pure JL flight number as opposed the AA flight number], my name is XXXX and my date of travel is such and such...".

Here's a data point on JAL seat selection on an award ticket purchased with AA miles. I did not need to call.

My ticket has an AA flight followed by a JL flight (prime flight codes because it's an award ticket). Once ticketed, I plugged the e-ticket number (001..., not record locator) into the Qatar Airways site. The QR site threw up a modal asking me to enter my email and phone number, which errored out when I did. However, I was able to use the web inspector (developer tools) to remove the modal, which let me see the Amadeus record locator (different from the AA record locator, has numbers in it). If you have access to a JavaScript console for this page, run $(".confirmation-pnr").text() and it should print out a string that includes the record locator.

I took that record locator, plugged it into JAL's Manage My Booking, with the AA flight number of the first flight on the ticket (operated by AA), my last name, and my first name only, though my middle name is also on the ticket it did not work when I included it. I could then pick seats for me and my friend, including the window seats in business blocked for OWS and OWE.

Your mileage may vary. This is an award ticket in business, so there might be differences for revenue or codeshares or itineraries including other airlines.

Award tickets are generally not an issue as they are on the native JL number.

Tried to call JAL call center both yesterday and today but wait was too long and could not get through! Will try again tomorrow morning. (Maybe the UK call center instead)

Also - I tried to QR eticket workaround suggested, but as others have pointed out, it does not work for AA/JL codeshares.

Don’t waste your time. You need to deal with AA for seat assignment.

JCC87 Dec 30, 2019 4:57 am

Had the same issue with my BA codeshare flight. JL refuse to give me a window seat in business as I booked through BA. They did assign me an aisle seat over the phone though. I even offered to pay extra but they wouldn't have it. Only way to get a window seat is to get lucky when online check-in opens or have status. So frustrating. It seems nobody on the internet has been able to circumvent this ridiculous rule.

Called AA call center today. No wait! :) and I now have my window seats. A lot more painless than waiting for JL to pick up the phone. Yay!

IME, getting seat assignments on an AA or BA codeshare (when operated by the other carrier) have been among the smoothest of all codeshares that I've encountered.

For a BA operated/AA marketed flight, I just call AA to get the BA record locator, which then allows me to go to the BA website to select seats. Done it many times without issue, in both Y & J.

I've only done it once or twice the other way around (BA marketed/AA operated), and I remember the process was similar as above (with carriers switched).

I'm not sure how having to call AA then go to BA website is smoother than just calling AA and getting the seat assignment.

Sometimes they'll offer to select seats for me when I call AA, which is fine. If there's a certain seat that I'm after (e.g. 62A/K in 747 CW) and they can grab it, then great.

But if not, then I just prefer selecting seats while looking at a seat map, rather than going back and forth with an agent on what seats are available.

It also helps if a better seat becomes available later on, where I can just go online and make the change instead of calling up AA again.

Same here, paid business class ticket (SIN-NRT-LAX-LAS return), ticketed by AA with AA flight number (operated by JAL for SIN-NRT-LAX legs) and OWE.
- I have Amadeus PNR but unable to "manage my booking" on JAL website (error message/ booking can't be found)
- Travel agent tells me they cannot assign seats on JL operated segments (4 out of 6 segments in the booking)
- JL tells me it's an AA ticket and AA should assign the seats
- AA customer service tells me that only full fare business class tickets (J booking class) AND OWS/OWE status are required to get seat pre-assignment on JL code-share...

Ok I need some help here

- Award ticket
- HKG-HND-HKG / B772
- 2 pax - 1 OWE 1 OWS
- Logged in using JL flight #s and AMA PNR
- Selected 1A/2A - all good for about a month.

Now found out that I got kicked out of those seats and moved to 3D/G
Expertflyer shows my previously selected 1A/2A as blocked. I assume for OWE? Which I am!

call JL?
or is there another trick?

will JL unblock seats and reserve those as I am OWE or is that not an official rule?

wrong thread. you already asked elsewhere and it is answered there.
this thread is about Selecting seats on JAL when booked as AA codeshare. Yours is not a codeshare.

Looking at booking an AA/JL itinerary in discount business class. Same price on either carrier's stock. Sounds like I should book through JL if I want seat assignments on the JL segments (3 of 4)? Will I have trouble getting an advance seat on the AA operated segment from AA? I'm EXP.

I have never had problems getting seats on a JL coded AA flight, JAL allows me to pick AA allows me to pick.

You can pick through AA, but you'll have to call AA about it. If talking to a person instead of going through a webui bothers you that much, then go JL. Otherwise, just decide based on what rewards you more when crediting to the frequent flyer program of your choice.

For AA awards on JL yes, you need to call.. For JL coded codeshare on AA online works like a charm.

Is there an easier way to select a special meal on a JAL flight? Maybe send an email or something?

I have an upcoming flight AA number, JAL metal. I need to make a special meal request. As an exp AA has already assigned seats but says that JAL will not let them select a meal. They gave me the JAL record locator but it does not work online (tried as flight number, JL flight number, flight number of my original AA flight, I can't think of what else to try). My attempts to call JAL have been hit with long hold times but it looks like the only option I have is to find a two hour block to wait it out.

vanillabean Feb 20, 2020 11:55 pm

While checking the seats for DW and me on an award flight reserved through AA and operated by JL, I was reminded of the following upside down mechanism. You don’t log into your JL account and then add the flight. No, you look up the PNR and then add your JL account number to it.

Now I just have to figure out how to add passport numbers to the reservation …

I don't know what this has to do with code share reservations, as awards are always on the native number (we may need an award seat selection thread(?))...

All that being said, when you do online check in, or check in at the counter is plenty fine for entering your passport details.

An award is not code share, it is always on the native flight number.

The answer, however, is that you will not be able to preselect a window seat in row 5. If they are still available when on line check in opens, you can get them.

Quick question: I just OLCI for tomorrow JL61/AA8407 and I noticed that JL has my Advantage number, but it didn't transfer over my ExPlat status. Would they be able to do that at the counter in LAX? My concern is that the JL OLCI portal was telling me that my checked baggage allowance is only 2 bags, and I'm in First (A).
