VCE to Rome by train?
Is it very difficult or tedious to go from Venice to Rome by train? After our stay in Venice at Easter, our daughter and grandson were planning to go on to Rome for 4-5 days. They would be traveling Easter Sunday? Would that be a problem, as in things might be closed?
Would it be better to fly?

Answer to first question: as easy as it gets. There is at least one train per hour at X:25 (and sometimes also at X:35), and it takes less than 4 hours. Only "problem" is that trains on Easter Sunday afternoon might be crowded, so I'd buy the tickets as soon as this is feasible, i.e. January 5 (4 months ahead of trip).
Second question: By "everything" being closed you mean what, exactly? Museums? RR stations, stores, restaurants? Answer: No, No, Yes (Most of them), Yes and No (they'll always find somewhere to eat, most probably "touristy")

Traveling on Easter Sunday will not be a problem - but arriving in Rome on Easter Sunday could be - as transportation from the train station to their hotel will be somewhat difficult to find - and its very very crowded b/c of visitors/services at the Vatican.
If it were me - Id stay in Venice on Sunday and take a train Mon am to Rome.

Careful, on Monday (Pasquetta) trains, planes and highways will be extremely crowded: this is a typical "travel" day when people will be coming home from a long weekend. I remember a few years ago when I needed 5-6 hours for Napoli-Rome on the autostrada! On the other hand, a Freccia in the morning with arrival in Rome in the early afternoon would be no problem. And there will always be taxis at Termini.

There is, however, no way I would arrive in Rome on Easter Sunday - and I speak the language/understand the bus/metro system.

Yes, I would add that on Paquetta/Easter Monday, which is a holiday for almost everyone, there also are a lot of day-trippers crowding the terminals, so I would expect Monday to be much busier than Sunday. In any case, a train trip from Venice to Rome would be a great pleasure and constitute part of their vacation. They would travel in comfort and have a tour of Italy outside their windows.

It's as tedious as flying from any city to any city. But it is more expensive than the train, it takes about the same time if one counts from city centre to city centre, there are more services and it is certainly a more relaxed trip.

There's a nice free app with train information and timetables for Italy and much of the rest of Europe called Locomotimes. It can be downloaded from iTunes. I understand it is also available for Android.
