I have a similar situation on an upcoming flight, Air France IAD - BOM, and then the next afternoon BOM - COK on Jet Airways. From what I've read so far it sounds like I'd need to collect my bags and then recheckin for the domestic segment the next day since its not on the same ticket.

For my return I'm on AI COK - BOM, then international BOM - IAD 4 hours after landing, also not on same ticket, does anyone have any additional advice for how to handle checking bags to minimize the number of times I have to check them in or to make the transitions easier?

The change in BOM was a bit of a pain because it took 30 minutes for the luggage to arrive and the walk to the check-in counter was via an exterior roadway that was very crowded with people and cars. It was still very nice to be able to skip the transfer bus.

I would say that 1.5 hours is the minimum time to make this transfer.
Some agents are lazy or uninformed.
  • On a DEL-JFK trip using two airlines on a single ticket, my luggage was checked through to DEL.
  • On a BWI-AMS-DEL trip, the BWI agent would not check my luggage through since there was an overnight halt in AMS as the flight from BWI arrived in AMS after the flight to DEL had left.
  • On one of my WAS-DEL trips on one ticket, AA to LHR and GF to DEL, with a 13-14 hour layover in LHR. At first, AA agent in WAS would not check my luggage through to DEL. Then she wanted me to sign a release relieving AA of any liability in case of delay or loss.
  • Upon return from DEL, I had no issues checking in my bags through.
  • On one of my MSY-BKK (NW) and BKK-DEL (IC) two tickets, the agent would not check my baggage through to DEL. I didn't have enough time to argue with him.
  • While returning from DEL, I had no problems again.
  • The oone occasion I had some difficulty in DEL was when I was going DEL-BKK (AI) and BKK-NRT-LAX-DTW-WAS (NW) because the AI system was unable to print luggage routing tags with more than three segments. A supervisor came and helped him get around the glitch.
If you are patient firm and polite, you can get Indian agents to do it.

I don;t know what the airlines legal obligation is if you bought two separate tickets that are not in conjunction. In might be that the airline is not legally bound to transfer your baggage to another airline when the two tickets are not conjuncted.
In case of a single ticket using multiple airlines, an airline that refuses to check your bags through is violating terms of tariff, provided any of your layovers is not more than 24 hours.

An interesting situation arises when you have 24 hours and 10 minutes layover. For example, when you arrive at 9:00 a.m. your next flight departs at 9:10 a.m. You can't very well catch it the same day, so you have to catch it the next day. Your halt exceeds 24 hours.
