  • Login problems: If you have trouble logging into the Iberia website, type in your number and password by hand instead of using autocomplete. For some people this fixes login issues.
  • Partner awards: Many flights on partners will not be available as one-way. You must redeem AA flights as a round trip for example
  • Cancellations: Iberia awards on AA cannot be cancelled.

Was able to book flights more than 330 days out (as of today I should only be able to book up to Oct 26th which is 330, but via avios booking it didnt really have a date. So I found two biz seats for Nov 8th MAD-TYO

Having trouble picking seats. Is it because it's too far out?

I'm not sure if Iberia will be smart enough to deduct the 90k first or if they will use some of my miles that I earned from a flight first and then deduct from the 90k batch. So technically, the 90k miles hit my account first, and then the extra 3k hit much later so theoretically, they should deduct from the 90k batch first and the 1500 should be safe. What do you guys think? Thanks.
Their IT is not that bad. You are fully compliant with the terms of the promotion, there's no doubt that you should keep those points.

Changes

Is the consensus that we will be able to change flights up until the date of travel for just the regular change fee?

I would assume so. BUT remember, the max date you can change to is 1 year from the date the e-ticked was booked. If you book 29th Nov, you may change it up to the 28th Nov 2019.

In practice, I suspect it might be the case, BUT the reminder email that Iberia sent earlier this months has the following language:
Any purchases charged to Avios from this promotion (redemptions) may be exchanged and reissued, if applicable, up until December 1st 2018, as per the particular terms and conditions of the products purchased.
So I assume YMMV, but they could very well treat those as NONREF/NOCHGS tickets. That is, if they can identify which Avios were part of the promo, and there is also no clear answer regarding awards booked with a mix of promo Avios and other Avios.

They just sent me an upselling email for a redemption booking I (successfully) canceled several weeks ago.
Everyone claiming that it will be smooth sailing tomorrow, I admire your optimism.

Why?

They offered an incredibly rich offer and stuck by it. Most were able to book flights by the prescribed deadline using the miles they acquired at a ridiculously low cost. They've clearly stated that after 12/1 you should not expect to be able to make any changes to those booked flights. Many of us think that won't be the case in practice (for tickets that don't require reissue), but if they enforce it, we've all been clearly warned multiple times so no one should have an expectation that any changes will work.

So what's the disaster?

I have just spent my final 12,000 on a hotel room over Christmas.

I got around £1200 gbp of value out of my 90,000 Avios. so pretty happy with that.

Again, I fail to see how this portends major issues. If you successfully canceled, what's the problem here? Presumably you received your points back already and if they were from the promo, you've rebooked. I get incorrect emails all the time from airlines, hotels, etc on bookings I've canceled. They often schedule these in their systems far in advance, so it doesn't indicate that there was anything wrong with your cancellation.

The disaster is that Iberia doesn’t have the IT infrastructure to execute this properly.
They can’t even tell that a booking was canceled several weeks ago. How will they figure out who used up their promo Avios and who didn’t? How will they find out which award bookings should become non-refundable?
Better order a truckload of popcorn before tomorrow.

My wild guess is that they won't do anything besides checking who redeemed/who didn't (incl. those who transferred out to BA), then deducting the appropriate amount of Avios, and be done with it. It'll be too hard for them to figure out which bookings should be restricted, plus, as I was trying to point out earlier, in case of a schedule change/cancellation, they'd likely be bound by EU law to refund the ticket, just like they'd have to refund a non-refundable revenue ticket in a similar case.

Also, if it is any indication, the Avios booking I made have the standard change/refund conditions for Avios redemption in the email. No indication that it's special in any way.

My partner and I maxed out on the promo - I've spent all of mine and he's got just over 7k in his account. I looked at using these toward hotels, but in every case, the dollar amount in addition to the Avios is around the same price as the best rate I can get without using any. Anybody come up with any other decent uses of small balances? I'll still be happy if these just end up dying, but of course would love to maximize.

how about a short haul flight into London / UK ?

IB fees/taxes are a bit silly on ex-UK but are ok on inbound. LUX-LON is a particularly cheap option !
