The last stay I used a TSU on did not deduct from my account until after the stay. The hotel had it noted and applied properly at check in without needing intervention.

I have another stay today where the award is still in my account and the upgrade was not processed right.

I have SUA on a points booking. No upgrade deducted and suite not reflected in my reservation. Hyatt double confirmed the upgrade is definitely in place for my stay.

Yeah that suite is just a regular room connected to another regular room, the second regular room has a pill out couch instead of a normal bed. There on the sides of the tower, not nearly as nice as the bay view suites. The hotel is about to be renovated, it's in rough shape.

So I've learned, repeatedly, that they never forget to deduct it. They biff the membership number and take it from someone else's account. I've had it happen to me 3 times now.

It's so bad that I proactively book all my suite upgrades far into the future just to turtle. It's really hard to get them back if someone redeems them and consumes them. I have no idea how others manage this, or if I'm just really unlucky.

Very interesting.

I've had 2 TSUs disappear from account over the years. On one occasion, Hyatt put another TSU into my account. That was interesting because the first time I had a TSU disappear, I was told it's not possible to put a TSU back into a member's account that hasn't been earned. On this occasion, I was compensated for the loss of the TSU with the number of points equal required to redeem a standard suite for 7 nights which totalled 42,000. I was then given an extra 12K points in compensation for a total of 54K. Since then, I routinely take screenshots of my Hyatt account and keep ledgers of my account activity.

Question on reservation conversion...I am looking at booking a suite on points. It is available, but I do not have a suite upgrade certificate at this time (will be on the fence of earning and may matress run to qualify). If I do get the suite upgrades at a later date, can I convert my full points reservation (53,000 point/night) to a points plus suite upgrade reservation (35,000 points/night plus TSU) regardless of room availability (suite or standard) at the time of conversion? I couldn't find anything definitive. The points saving will make mattress running worth it, but I don't want to spend the money/points and then not be able to convert. Thank you.

Short answer - No.

Long Answer -

I would book the base room, then when you have the TSU you can apply it.

Sounds like a Category 7 on Peak Dates based on what’s been provided.

There’s no real way to downgrade a suite booked fully on points.

To guarantee the suite what you would want to do is book both the suite and a base room, hopefully you have enough points. Then once the TSU comes in cancel the suite and upgrade the base room at the same time on the phone with the agent so there’s no possibility the suite gets sold.

This is frowned upon as you’re technically taking up two rooms, but if you really want to guarantee it that’s the only way.

If you don’t mind chancing it then either book the suite now hold it and hope for the best or book the base room now hold it and apply the TSU when it comes in.

Actually if you want to do it better you would book the base room with points, book a suite with cash (refundable), and then when you get the DSU you can cancel the suite and thus there will be a suite available, and use your upgrade.
There is no reason to book the suite with points.

And regarding multiple rooms: it isn't like airlines where you cannot literally fly on 2 different planes an hour apart. You can have many reasons for having multiple hotel rooms, like you are staying with friends.
So I don't think there would ever be issues booking multiple rooms.
