If you have a Hyatt card, make sure to register for the new promotion to get 10% points back on all points and/or cash + points hotel bookings. Good for travel through 10/31.

I'm looking at the Hyatt Singapore, and I found this:

. . .

Seems like that should be $125 based on Hyatt's chart.

To me that does seem odd. I can understand the local currency amount varying (which to me is still problematic but a separate issue) but if the rates are being displayed in USD as they are in this example then I agree it should show USD125.

Having spent way too much time on the hyatt website, i guess the OP was quoted in Singapore dollars, and he changed the currency shown to USD.
so, the rate was rightly quoted in SGD, but the screenshot is only of the displayed amount when switching the view to USD.

Yes, it did show SGD and I did change it to USD.

But isn't it originally truly in USD? If so, converting and then converting back should net to the same.

No, since they do not use a floating rate. The rate for conversion from USD to local currency is set at a certain time and then does not change until they reset it. HR Kyoto's rate was set when P&C rates were first introduced and has not changed since. I'm not sure, but it seems that some properties update more frequently than that.

As discussed above, depending on your own currency, this sometimes will work to your advantage, but with the recent strengthening of the US$ it is more likely a disadvantage right now.

I'm starting to see that Hyatt is always making money on the spread. Each time I'm in a non-US property, whether the dollar is going up or down, my conversion is markedly worse than the trading rate.

that's not true... plenty of properties where the cash part of P+C was or is below the current USD amount.

I wonder if Hyatt would do well to always offer guests the opportunity to pay the cash component of a points plus cash rate in USD, in addition to the local currency.

OsakaWino Jul 12, 2016 6:20 pm

Revenue bookings are always in local currency, so having P&C bookings at a fixed rate in local currency as well makes sense to me; also easy to compare the value of P&C vs all-cash.

Given any thought to the fact that most properties wouldn't be able to process USD payments without incurring (extremely) high costs? Maybe it's time to realise that large parts of the world have a local currency....

Exchange rate adjusted - but in the WRONG direction!

Recently made a P&C res at HR Kyoto and found that they had recently changed the yen rate for the cash portion. Up until last month the $125 was being charged at 14,821 yen, for an exchange rate of 118.57, which is a far cry from the current rate of 105-106, but it has been that way from the beginning and never adjusted, so I could live with that, even though it has been quite some time since the dollar was so high against the yen.

Well, it seems that they finally got around to changing the exchange rate for the cash portion of P&C, but instead of moving more toward the current rate, they moved in the OPPOSITE direction. The $125 is now being charged at 15,147 yen, for an exchange rate of 121.18, which is equivalent to $143 at the current rate!

Coincidentally, I had a $100 credit on a stay this past weekend, and they gave me a rate of 99.31!

What did they say when you asked why the FX rate was set incorrectly?

I was looking for hyatt hotels in Denver and I found something interesting: Hyatt house Denver/Lakewood is Cat 2 hotel but shows 4000+$45 for cash+points. I am not sure this is glitch or it's up to each hotel to reduce cash rate for P&C
