Upgrade space is capacity controlled, separately from revenue space in J cabin. The number of seats released to the different upgrade types are driven by a number of factors, but never by the "there are unsold seats in J cabin, let's fill them" policy some other airlines employ. Same applies with upgrades to Premium Economy.

- AY highest tier members (Lumos, Plats, Golds) are prioritised with the travelling party size affecting upgrade priority (i.e. if only one seat is available in J, the party will not be split)

Well this is strange. I can pay for upgrade to HKG with points on the AY app but since I'm wait listed and AY have deposit my 100 000 points I'm not able to upgrade myself and am forced to wait for the team controlling the wait lists to upgrade me. Sigh.

At least my experience is that in such cases the waitlisted upgrade has cleared automatically, but the new ticket needs to be issued by CS and that might take some time. And yes, the app has offered me to re-upgrade, until I've received the new ticket.

If you want to, you can call in and they'll ticket it for you right away. Just tell them you can now see availability online and would like to make sure your waitlist is honored now that space is available. I'd do that if I were you, to make sure there are no IT glitches anywhere and you'll get those seats.

I'll be damned - all 3 waitlisted upgrades on the outbound for my flight in December to MIA have cleared. Inbound still waitlisted. Booking Class U by the way.

Interesting, that could be the reason. Yesterday there were 12 available seats but I noticed today this morning that the 2 seats in row 1 middle were blocked and occupied so it could be the wait list team have put me and my partner there but in order to see this we'll have to wait for our tickets to be issued as you say.
However that text "waiting list" changed and dissappeared after I upgraded us to economy comfort due to a 10% promotion on seats. So technical glitch or finnair prefers to earn money on economy comfort passangers rather than us paying 100k in points for two.
Sigh. Deeply dissapointed how they have been handling this wait list thing. Received tons of email and sms this week if we wish to pay with points and euros to upgrade. Called in two days ago and Cs asked us to wait for today.
Strange thing too, finnair Cs today confirmed to us there are no available business seats on got-hel-hkg. But the check in staff in Got confirmed there are available business seats but she can't do anything as it's up to finnair in Helsinki.
I'm so close to switch to SAS right now. Just need to spend my 250 000 Ay points. Will wait for the review your flight with us from Finnair and will give them zero on everything. What a nightmare this wait list have been.
I regret one thing and blame myself. I should have known it was possible to email finnair and arrenge us to put us on wait list back in December. And not in March.

What a mess! I'm glad you finally called, though. As soon as you received the first offer to upgrade, that sure was a sign that not everything is in order. I wish you would have called in right away. Their IT can be a mess, and who would have known that paying for Y+ forfeits the upgrade waitlist. Let's hope they'll give you your upgrade at HEL. When you get to HEL, if your gate isn't open yet, go directly to the transfer desk to take care of this (before people at the gate start asking and paying for upgrades...).

Great that it worked out for you in the end! About SAS... I don't really know if the grass is greener over there. At least their upgrade systems seemed to be far worse than AY's, with no possibility to have anything confirmed in advance. But maybe that has changed?
By the way, you should also get your money back for the Y+ seats. If it's not refunded automatically, ask for it after a couple of weeks.

Half load in J from LAX, after takeoff screen displays on offer to upgrade seat to J, but with economy meal (I assume drinks would be normal J). Check details from CC -> 670e , I think no-one took such an valuable offer. The value of successful upgrade voucher just got a inflation hike.

I m looking for flights to ORD, Expertflyer shows only 4 seats taken on each of the flights, the hotline told me the needed booking class is not available, but they waitlist me and eventually the upgrades clear. Low price Y tickets are more expensive then PE on LOT for the same dates - so I want to avoid to pay more and fly in a lower class. Would you take that bet?
