Just look at BA. They are cutting down back on almost everything, but they are still making a good profit. There was a post yesterday about the amount of booze that's carried (they are now round-tripping, so it frequently runs out). m3red could probably drink it all himself
Yes, but I thought the BA business model was milk all they can out of the transatlantic routes and sod the rest of the network

I mean, look at the margins on LHR-JFK 747s: fill up the plane with 20,000 US gallons of fuel, that's 35k USD so around 23k GBP. Fuel is about 35% of costs at BA, but that was when fuel was double the price now. So total other costs would be about 130k USD, so 165k USD, so about 100k GBP to run the sector.

High capacity J config on a 747 is 14/70/30/185 - and looking at even the cheap fares, that's 14*1500+70*1000+30*400+185*200 = 140k GBP. 80% load, so: 112k GBP. 12% margins - not bad at all, and that's based on the cheap cheap fares, not the expensive flex ones that I know people buy on BA...so...guess the rest of the network is losing money!

I've just upgraded two legs J to F so OK with that. Problem on the website but went through OK when I called.

A380 Seat 2K, but never been in the B777 suites before - any advantage of 2K over 1K on that?

Closer to the J cabin, further away from the F galley (as in, if the curtain isn't completely secure and your door is open you can see through to what you're watching on your screen if you try from row 6). Guess it depends on the relative noise levels between whoever's in row 6 and the crew in the galley!

Thanks, the noise doesn't worry me and if Row 6 want to watch the airshow on my screen they're welcome to.

I was more concerned if the space in either row was limited, the way row 1 is on the A380.

Has anyone noticed that miles for a flight already book but after 1 Feb has had its miles changed? I have a revenue F ticket booked for May/June where the outbound was Saver and the Return is Flex; now both directions are showing as Flex, with the base number of Tier miles on the outbound has increased.

Does Saver F end with the new fare and miles structure?

The space isn't limited in any way but 2A/K doesn't give you that much feeling of privacy because the J curtain always has a big wide slit open and you can see from the corner of your eye what the folks in row 6 are up to, which I find a bit disconcerting. My favorite is 1A (or K) on the 777.

There's been no change in my miles, but I didn't have any Saver F booked - only Saver J.

What I did notice a week or two ago was that the endorsement "CHK-IN REWARDUPGRADE" had disappeared when looking at some options, even though it was already stated that the ticket fell into that category. I didn't think much of it at the time, but it may have been in preparation for these changes.

Now turned into "Flex" and "Flex Plus" - however...their own site says that anything booked before Feb 1st will be under the old fare rules, so you may in fact just end up with the old miles.

Has anyone noticed this discrepancy though:

Say you want to do a one way upgrade LHR-BKK from flex plus.
If you call them and do a booking all the way through (upgrade both at the same time), it's 52500 miles.

But the cost of upgrading each sector LHR-DXB then DXB-BKK would be: 30000 + 39000 = 69000...

I know this is similar to the situation today, but do you think they will fix their system or will you still be penalised for upgrading each sector individually through the website when there is different availability?

Only just managed to lookat this properly tonight and have to say I am pretty miffed. Between myself and my wife we have about 500,000 miles which we have been accruing withplans in mind to upgrade to South America and Phillipines with a couple of others thrown in.

The jump in miles required for both of these destinations, South America in particular is huge! What I would currently pay 125,000 miles for is going to cost me 210,000. And I can't imagine the fare is going to be any cheaper for the privilege.

I fully understand and appreciate it is EK's programme and they have the ability to change at their discretion but to make such a big change is a total kick in the nuts.

We're now trying to plan those trips to try and book and upgrade before the changes come in but lo and behold there's no availability onany of the dates we are looking at despite being reasonably flexible.

The response I got from EK was why don't you try availability in February, I am sure some will open up. No surprises why!

Pretty disappointed after saving these miles up I kind of feel they are almost worthless. I will definitely begin to look at using other airlines from now on

It would be interesting to see who had given them this valuable feedback. I would also think a large amount of frequent fliers either won't have seen the e-mail or won't have read it thoroughly and will be in for a shock come 1st Feb if wanting to use miles.

I'm just a bit surprised that there hasn't been more negative comments about this.

Obviously everyone must be so wealthy that they don't care.

Isn't that one of the major problems of the world (excepting the Sub-continent)?

Are you sure you have to upgrade before the changes? I thought that as long as you booked before the change, then that booking would be dealt with under the current system.

Can anyone confirm this or otherwise?

To be honest, this is a First World problem, and hence no-one cares.

I don't think it came as a shock to many people.

I suspect the fare changes won't be as bad as people fear.

That is my understanding of it too, and I'll probably find out if I'm right or wrong in the first week of Feb
