Interesting - flying MAN-MRU Sunday - would be lovely to get op up. Didn't get one on my recent NRT-MAN though as in J for last leg anyway.

As far as I know they dont overbook F. I've heard (and never confirmed) that EK overbooks Y up to 20%, which then allows for 10% no shows. You can be sure that they have some complex revenue management algorithms which would be route dependent.
For example, the SIN-MEL-SIN traffic is highly seasonal - so they could use a lot of historical data to manage the load and book each cabin accordingly. Same goes for DXB-LHR - where I dont reckon they'd overbook as much. I think they would only overbook J by 10%
Just my 2 cents...
PS Lufthansa has just started overselling their F cabin on certain routes...

We had to get some of our people out of KUL today. They were earlier no shows last week on KUL-DXB (in Y), but were confirmed on the 19:XX flight out of KUL up until yesterday, however for some reason they were dropped... last minute scramble by the travel agent could only get them seats on the 10am flight, and everything else until the 16th was booked... result mad dash overnight from JB to KL!!

Never got op-upped at the gate BUT my seat wouldn't respond to the controller, the three preset buttons in the armrest worked, but none of the controller's individual functions did.
The purser was INSISTENT that I took one of the suites, and despite my protestations that I really wasn't that bothered, she insisted, and when I got up for a wee, my stuff was already on its way forwards.
Some of the best cabin crew / passenger interface I have ever come across, took ownership of the problem, and resolved it in the best way possible.

I beat the mid-morning madness and caught an early flight out of DXB on Friday. Y was completely full, so was J. I got the last seat in F when my IFE wouldnt work in J. Chauffeur was saying this was going to be his busiest day for a while.
Interesting that so many people found it quiet. Maybe since eid officially starts Monday they'll be more traffic (people getting out at least) then. I won't show face un DXB for a week and a half, just in case.

Oh, and my wife tells me that IATA rules restrict overbooking to 10% capacity. An airline can distribute that amongst the classes as they see fit. EK won't overbook F (LH I think is experimenting with that though), but they will push the legal limits.
But it works out. Last year I was waiting to board and loading agent came round asking if anyone would like to give up their seat in return for free return tickets to match their current itinerary. A third of the hands in the room shot up. Y travellers on holiday love those deals.

Flying EK38 out of BHX this evening. Loads are looking pretty light, which is probably why they have swapped for a 3 class plane, with First inoperative. At least that will mean there is more leg room in J!

Friday, when I start my journey LHR to MEL, looks busy too. There is no seat availability in any class on the flight options (via multi-city) shown for the LHR to DXB leg.
There is availability showing on the 404 via SIN and 406 non-stop DXB to MEL legs..however, unfortunately those are attached to codeshares ( 5*** Qantas flights) from LHR which are showing no seat availability from London.
So you can fly from Dubai but you cannot get there!!! I am not clear how that will work!!!
