When I actually have to travel to Dubai and other places in the area, I also do the stopover in DXB with a later onward date (typically the length of my trip) to CAI. Then, I have my next trip booked from CAI -> SFO/SEA/DFW to pick up from the inbound to CAI.

For example, I will book CAI->DXB->SEA for March 1st, then SEA->DXB on March 15th, and DXB->CAI on March 25th. From March 15th - March 25th I travel around the region on EK and other airlines. Then I have a flight booked from March 25th CAI->DXB->SEA with a return sometime in the future using the same stopover in DXB for the next trip.
Must have missed it I read the Skywards and Trip Reports, and bit of the cities if I'm going somwhere new or need suggestions. No worries though, its better to get the info late, then never at all!

Sure, and apologies for the thread creep. But just one suggestion, can we get a "sticky" for destinations where fares are cheaper than others. For example, when rates drop significantly out of CAI someone can mention it in that thread to give a heads up, and so on. Would be good info in one place.

Just keep up with the threads on the sales - for example the one on the recent global sale had all the details. It's similar with companion fare offers etc as and when they come up.

Thanks ung1, I've seen those threads, but my suggestion was for a sticky thread, which specifies origins where fares would be cheaper, when someone finds them.

For example, being based in KWI flying to LAX would cost me $7700 on J. However, flying out of CAI would cost me $3200, in my POV it is worth the trek over to CAI on another flight, and then catching EK to LAX from there, and pocketing the difference.
A similar thing I saw before was someone mentiong how much of a fare difference it was to fly out of AMS than MAN (they were based in MAN).

There was no announced sale or special fare at the time so would help as people book these runs and give us a heads up so we can go an hour or two off route, but still manage to keep our account balances dent free!

Again, sorry for the thread creep eightblack. (I promise its the last time )

What you need is an EF account and a lot of free time

Or KVS (I prefer the keyboard-oriented interface, which is faster). However, unless KVS offers a Mac OS solution that doesn't require me to buy more software, he'll lose me to EF when my subscription runs out. But I digress.

One of the reasons I prefer EK is that it's easier to search for fares due to the lack of ridiculous YQ surcharges. I don't really see how the (YQ + fare) concept makes any sense, as you can't advertise ex-YQ prices to consumers in most of the EU any more...

I've got my first 9 sectors in J as a (new) Gold this week - including a SIN-MEL Friday night - so will post back with data about the J-F op-up rate. So far 0/1. My Y rate is better - 1/4 Y-J and 1/4 Y-F!

I'll be on the SIN-MEL flight today. Hope the op-up works and I'll see you in First

Around the Qantas grounding SIN-MEL-SIN was an upgrades galore but with my 70% first, 30% economy, 0% business pattern I haven't got a single upgrade from economy to anywhere since, not even an option to purchase an upgrade to business. That is, unless getting to host a child care centre for Sri Lankan kids brought to scream at the empty seats around me while the parents went elsewhere in the plane to socialise counts as an upgrade.

How did it go? Business looked crowded but there were (at least) two empty seats in first. Did you have any luck?

\begin{rant}
I got sick on that flight This is only the second time ever I eat the caviar on Emirates and both times I have got sick. It probably is a coincident, but was wondering whether the cold chain DXB-SIN-MEL is that comprehensive.

It also took 1.5hours from the take off (at 22:35 + a small delay) to commence with the feeding frenzy so by the time we finally got something to eat I was pretty fed up with the whole waiting for food so ended up going to sleep instead of eating anything after that caviar.

Then the plane landed late and the biometric immigration things in Mel did not work so there was an endless queue for immigration even in the prioirity lane. And the guarantine people were in their usual "let's harrass travellers for the fun of it" mode so everything took a friggin' eternity.

\end{rant}

The joys of travel indeed. Luckily, the driver of the pick up car was an awesome character so at least there was something good

I was actually on that flight also (with my wife). Father Ted and I had a drink in the lounge to calm our nerves. The flight was one of those "missed it by that much" flights in terms of op-ups. Y was oversold by 4, J had 3 seats and F was only 4 out of 8. Although I would have liked to see what the real J load was like as I am convinced more than 4 people were op-upped to J.

And a very pleasant drink it was too - even if eightblack did disapprove of my choice of beer!

SingaporeJoe, I had a good flight - I didn't eat, but was kept well supplied with drinks by some great crew.

GigoloArt, how you manage a Y to F op-up is to fly a new route where there aren't many Golds, Y is oversold to hell and back (DUB), and have a nice chat with the person you suspect is the load controller. For what it's worth - they seem to have picked good staff and contractors in DUB, the few I've dealt with have been very pleasant and more than helpful so far. In the country that gave the world FR, I think they will do well by offering a product that makes air travel pleasant.

Well, as an Irishman, you should be ashamed of yourself for drinking Tiger!

And we wont tell the forum how we both ended up drinking Dom from F - when we were both sitting in J. It will only annoy Ung1...

Eightblack, I know you posted the above along time ago, but out of interest, is this worth doing? I mean asking at the service counter to be put on an OP-UP list? Does this even exist?

Guinness Anchor Berhad (GAB) is a major producer of beer and stout in Malaysia and has been listed on the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia since 1965. Among the brands they produce and market are Tiger Beer, Guinness, Heineken, Anchor Smooth, Anchor Strong, Kilkenny, Anglia Shandy, Malta, Paulaner, Strongbow, and Sol.

From the above, can I assume that the tiger is also Irish!!??. Thk the L.. for Guiness
