Me too! To this day, I still love McD's, and go there any chance I get. I've redeemed the 99 cent coffee deal more times than I can count. Far as I'm concerned, beats Starbucks, all things considered.

PS - Rare in the west coast, but whenever I see one, say in Vegas or some malls, I'd literally make a beeline towards it.
I can just see some guy named Duncan now starting his own donut and coffee chain.

Yeah, I've never liked Starbucks. Way too acidic and it gives me stomach aches. I will only drink it if I need caffeine stat!

I like to collect the McD's coffee stickers for when the stupid Monopoly contests occur throughout the year.

The buy 5 and get 1 free? Yeah, I do that too!

GBest - Always stop by Bob's donuts on Polk after Swan's. Well, that was when there was at least outdoor dining.

Where are you located? Definitely not Canada. In Canada ours is Buy 7 and get 1 free. During the $1 promos (Canada's is $1, not $0.99) I always get XXL sizes.

(Based on your Bob's Donuts and Polk reference, a quick google seems to indicate SF area. )

7?! Ah, that ole price discrimination thing is alive and well, I see. Yep, the city by the bay...

lol yes, Bobs is ace. I went there in 2020 and a couple times in 2019! Once with Anna, after the Chromatics / Desire concert! Very fun. I bought the chromatics tickets when I was in Anaheim before we headed to Disneyland. Also signed up for Zoo camp that week.

Swans is good plus they now have Dungeness crab, but I last ate there in 2012.

so I really also love Johnny doughnuts and I went there once in 2020 :-). They cost more than Bobs. Theyre larger.
I wouldnt mind another trip to Bobs donuts or Johnny doughnuts. But I did have nice donuts on New Years Eve so I probably cant justify going for doughnuts for awhile.

One of my favorite lunch places, and there used to much less of a line. With social media, there seems to a line there daily, at least before the pandemic. Swan's for lunch, and then Bob's for donuts had always been almost perfect for me. People used to ask if I were still hungry after Swan's? My reply was since when do you have to be hungry to eat donuts?! Never heard of such a thing.

Gotta try Johnny's though, the next chance I get.

Getting back to coffee...... how do people select their beans? Ive got a good local roaster who has a rotating mix of 12-15 blends and single origin beans from the usual places.

Ive been spending a bit of time trying to decipher their cupping notes, and come to the conclusion Im more on the caramel/spice side of the flavour wheel than the citrus fruit end.

Does anyone use cupping scores or is there a way to attribute geography to taste? I started out ordering Ethiopian beans but I found them typically to be towards the fruity/acidic taste and Ive had more success with Central American and Indonesian beans.

I'm still not as sophisticated as you and others here. I just buy my branded grinds from the supermarket.

I buy mine from online retailers as the store stuff tends not to be as good quality.

I buy mine at The Epicurean Trader so I trust their curation and acknowledge that they still carry some bean inventory that was roasted 2-3 months ago; I buy whatever is the most recent roast date based on $16.99 for 12 ounces. They have a blend from 4 Barrel, who have a partnership with Tartine. My preference is really based on the roast date.

Roast date is important. more important though, is the grind. The less time between the grind and the brew, the better. I grind beans every couple of days but, acknowledge that that is less than ideal too.

I measure by tbsp and then grind my beans seconds before making my daily coffee. Every morning. We recently stayed away and had a bag of ground coffee from Mr Espresso (Oakland); we had excess which I took home and boy did I love the convenience. Of course, now back to the grind...
