Just wanted to throw my two bits to fish and chips general. I love fish and chips but damn it, it's got to be really good if I'm going to allocate my precious calories to eating it.
When I went to the UK this past spring (2010), I specifically identified popular fish and chip places in Edinburgh and London to make sure I'd visit a few while over there. I forced my wife to visit two (L'Alba D'Oro in Edinburg and Master Super Fish & Chips in London) and we were a tad disappointed. I like batter as much as the the next guy
but found the batter was a bit heavier than we like. However the fish itself was very good both times.
In Vancouver, my favourites are Go Fish! near Granville Island and C-Lovers. Go Fish! uses a lighter tempura batter and their fish is supposed obtained from the boats in the fish sales pier. Fries could be better tho. C-Lovers has a standard batter but isn't very heavy. Very good fries too.
I find Ivar's ok. However, my research seemed to point to Spud Fish & Chips as a better choice. I think they're pretty good good but their fish is breaded and I'm more impartial to battered.
I want to mention Bowpicker Fish and Chips in Astoria. They're offering is a little different than standard as they only do a battered albacore tuna served with steak fries. Different but good different. Funky location too as it's served from an old gillnet boat.
Looking forward to trying the Frying Scotsman in Portland too!

Agree. Ivar's is not bad - especially the location across from the waterfront Marriott (the hole in the wall one, not the full-on restaurant)

Another vote for A Salt & Battery in NYC.
If anyone has any suggestions for London, England, I'd love to hear them.

I've been to A Salt & Battery and thought it was rather overpriced... I'm very fortunate that within 5 minutes drive of my house are 3 fish & chip shops, one of which was voted best in the UK in one of those polls for 3 years running
Battered chips are absolutely delicious

Some recommendations in London
Rock and Sole Plaice, Covent Garden
Fryer's Delight, Theobolds Road, Holborn (in so many ways, down even to the decor, the quintessential British chippie)
Golden Hind, Marylebone
Canteen offer an excellent daily breaded fish. But that isn't real British fish and chips.
..and one to avoid despite the endless recommendations
Seashell, Lisson Grove, Marylebone. it went downhill 6-7 years ago when the old owner sold up. Ovepriced and mediocre quality.

I haven't been through Islington in a while, but I do recall a very nice Fish and Chip shop on Stoke Newington High Street called Tina's Fish Bar. Also, near Highbury and Islington stn, there is a place called the Trawlerman that I also thought was rather good. However, their portions were rather small. I cannot (or will not) eat an entire regular portion of Fish and Chips anyway, so it wasn't a big deal for me.

London Fish & Chips
Fryer's Delight used to be good, but in the last years has gone downhill.
Masters Superfish: I like them; had never had the problem JAY71 mentions (heavy batter), loves the ambiance (very simple interior, patrons mostly working persons - at night lots of cab drivers, no pretentions there), huge portions, both fish and chips always crispy. Just a curiosity: the owners (for the last three years at the least) are a a Chinese family, the cooks are occidental, don't know their nationality.
North Sea Fish Restaurant: a more upscale restaurant, with a take away at the side door, it is very good (a little bit better than Master's Super Fish, in my opinion). It is located between Russell Square and King's Cross/St. Pancras Tube Stations.
