Carvel is preparing to come on strong in greater Houston.

It may not even be the best ice cream. However, the ice cream is made fresh at every Carvel location. I am sure happy to learn of its ongoing nationwide expansion of franchises, because I surely enjoy Carvel ice cream.

I typically enjoy soft Chocolate ice cream with chocolate sprinkles in a sugar cone.

Bonus: For as long as I can remember, Wednesday is Sunday at every participating Carvel ice cream store. This means that when you buy one sundae, you receive one sundae free!

Their ice cream is delicious and their shops feel so comfortable, rather old-fashioned service....at least I hope it still is, since I've not been for a couple of years.
Newport Creamery actually filed Chapter 11 a couple of years ago, and closed some restaurants. But many others have stayed open, and the company is still in operation. In fact, the company is trying to "redesign" itself, and they are opening up new restaurants called Newport Cafe. (One just opened in Narragansett, RI.)

Yes - they still have the Awful, Awfuls!

Buttonwood Farms
Griswold, CT

They make fresh real ice cream from the dairy cows on their farm. I rate it as the best in the RI/CT area. And it is a few miles from Foxwoods Casino.

If you take the "Carrollton spur" of the Canal Streetcar line it a great ride on a the street car with a nice cool treat at the end!

Most of mine come from my childhood... My brother got the bell rung at Farrell's twice in one night when he ate two banana splits. He was eight at the time.

My favorite custard is Kohr's on the Jersey Shore. We only got it every summer when we visited the beach for our vacation. Now I'll just run up to the boardwalk and get it.

Having lived in Chattanooga, I'll put in a vote for Clumpie's as well. Great ice cream and a great view of the renovated Chattanooga downtown. Bruster's, which can be found in most "larger" towns in the south, is pretty darned good as well.

Jaxson's in Dania Beach, FL has excellent hand made Ice cream. It is on Federal Highway about a mile South of the Fort Lauderdale Int'l airport. It has been an institution in South florida since the 1950's.

I'll second Jake's in Atlanta (especially the Piedmont location!) and Harrell's in Cambridge, and add a few of my own:

Big Olaf's
Siesta Key, Sarasota FL

Sorbetteria Castiglione
Via Castiglione
Bologna, Italy
(by far the best gelato in Italy)

I second the mention of Kopps. The wholesome Milwaukee chain holds a special place in my heart. After our small wedding reception, we took our guests to Kopps for custard - in the middle of December. The gentlemen in white uniforms and white paper hats served us some delicious holiday Mint Chocolate Chip custard.

The special flavor changes daily, but the fallback chocolate and vanilla are equally delightful. There's nothing like it, and it's definitely worth the trip

Anyone remember the Buffalo at the corner of Irving and Pulaski in Chicago? It's so hard to get a good hot fudge sundae these days. Almost as nice as the Shell Station which replaced it.

Just two blocks from my house!
Good stuff, but I only partake sparingly

Exclamation Custard Beach NYC?

Does anyone know anything about Custard Beach in NYC? I have never had frozen custard and it sounds intriguing. I found this one by searching citysearch. they have a branch in Grand Central.

I've had it - its very good. But, don't get too intrigued with the idea of frozen custard. If you're thinking some new sensation in terms of taste and consistency, you'll be disappointed. It can be very good, but it's not terribly different from soft serve ice cream, just denser and richer.

Unhappy

Abbotts in Rochester NY was an infrequent treat for me. Was so sad when the one near my family was closed for the season in winter, and I did have time to get to the lakeside custard stand.
