Doumar's is delicious

When I was at university in Harrisonburg, VA Kline's ice cream was a weekly occurance - their chocolate peanut butter homemade flavor is to die for

I believe Buffalo's moved to Buffalo Grove, Illinois on the corner of Arlington heights Rd and Lake Cook Rd. just east of hwy 53. Great hot Fudge sundaes there!

Vivoli in Florence and Giolitti in Rome have the best gelato I've ever had (and I've had a lot of gelato!).

I'm just getting back from the Stroget in Copenhagen, and the soft ice (soft serve)just about anywhere on this street is very good!

My favorite if Bassett's of Philadelphia.

Hard to find in NY, but if y0u're in downtown Philly they've got a stand in the Reading Terminal Market.

Two flavors to die for: Butterscotch Vanilla and Marshmallow Chocolate. (Like Ben & Jerry's there's no skimping on the mixed-in flavors but Bassett's is smoother and they don't insist on encumbering, like B&J, practically every variety with chocolate chunks.

In terms of the soft variety, NYC's long-gone Prexy's.

Known for their hamburgers (from fresh, not frozen patties) grilled from scratch (slogan: "The Hamburger With A College Education") their soft-serve (only flavor, vanilla) was the softest, creamiest, richest soft ice cream I ever had (last time had to have been over thirty years ago).

In Hoboken NJ and other places around NJ and other states: Rita's Water Ice:

http://www.ritasice.com/locations.cfm

I stumbled onto this place over the weekend because my usual ice cream place, Ben & Jerry's, was packed with dozens of junior high school students and I don't like crowds. Rita's is a small place with a nice selection of ice creams as well as Italian ices and custards too.

I had the Blendini with Oreo's cookies and cream. Very nice.

It's not your traditional ice cream parlor and it's a chain but nice customer service and a good selection.

Also, for NYC and nostalga buffs... do you remember Schraffts Ice Cream Parlors and restaurants that were around NYC?

I was too young and too much into Mister Softee to appreciate Schraffts but I remember my neighbor taking me there a few times.

Here's a little story on Schraffts:

LOVE history whether it's NYC or US or dead malls or Cats or Flyertalk history!

I'm with you! I've had lots of good ice cream around the world, but I always come home wanting Carvel. And, yes, it's still "Wednesday is Sundae." The sundaes are bogo and the fudge is the best! I treat myself once a month.
Marcia

Carvel

Perhaps it is because of the memories of eating the soft ice cream from this ice cream chain when I was a boy growing up in Brooklyn, but Carvel ice cream is in its own class. The Flying Saucers, shakes and ice cream cakes are just a few of the frozen ice cream treats which Carvel offers that are also worthy of a try. It may not be the richest or creamiest ice cream. It may not even be the best ice cream. However, the ice cream is made fresh at every Carvel location. I am sure happy to learn of its ongoing nationwide expansion of franchises, because I surely enjoy Carvel ice cream.

I typically enjoy soft Chocolate ice cream with chocolate sprinkles in a sugar cone.

Bonus: For as long as I can remember, Wednesday is Sunday at every participating Carvel ice cream store. This means that when you buy one sundae, you receive one sundae free![/QUOTE]

The commercials from Carvel in the 70's and the 80's with the founder, Tom Carvel where also a HOOT with him talking about Fudgie the Whale and Cookie Puss cakes.

The new commercial's funny too with the father reflecting on Fudgie the Whale and Cookie Puss and the kids say "can we just eat the cake now?"

Carvel recently made it out West. I was very excited having grown up with it. Very fond memories of soft serve vanilla on a hot summer day. Alas, it was not as I remembered. Cloyingly sweet and just not the consistency as I remembered it.

*Sigh*

I was completely unimpressed when Carvel came to Texas. I had heard all the hype and it was just an OK soft serve. I guess it's what you are accustomed to or what your taste buds like.

Milwaukee Joe's (already mentioned)
www.milwaukeejoes.com
Bedford, Southlake and Dallas Texas
Milwaukee Joe's has a flavor of the day which be anything from Jack Daniel's chocolate, Wild Turkey pecan pie, butterscotch bliss, eat more chocolate, cotton candy, rum mango and one of my favorites strawberries Romanoff. This place will even email you when your favorite flavor is about to come into rotation.

Freckles Frozen Custard
http://frecklesfrozencustard.com/
Freckles is in various locations in and around Tulsa, Oklahoma including the Tulsa airport, immediately after you go through security to the left. They do a variety of wild flavors too, my favorite is the Snappy Turtle.
