If I'm at a restaurant and I order take-out, I may leave a tip depending on where my order was placed (the bar vs the hostess stand vs a special takeout section). It also depends on how helpful the person was taking my order.
But if I'm at Five Guys or a pizza place, I'm not tipping for take-out or eating in.

I'm incredibly inconsistent with this. I'm never really sure what the norm is. If the staff is really pleasant, and I placed a somewhat difficult order, I'll leave a couple bucks. If I'm just picking up some basic takeout (chinese, thai, etc), I usually only leave a buck or two, and then only if it's somewhere I visit regularly.

I'll typically leave a tip when ordering take-out but often not quite as much as when I dine in. I assume that it goes to the cook, dishwashers and wait staff who are generally, IMO, underpaid anyway. They appreciate the gesture and karma - like water and relationships - finds its own level.

Not that shocking. Most every sit-down restaurant I see charges $2.00-$2.50, but with free refills. They probably don't have an option to ring in for a cheaper no-refill drink. One place I hang out does have a "kids pop" that comes in a smaller cup, but not sure how much cheaper it is.

I just picked up take-out for a group, and left a ~18% tip when signing the bill. After I sat down to wait for the food to be brought out, the hostess showed the other hostess my bill and pointed to the tip in a surprised way (she tried to be discrete, wasn't).
Is tipping for take-out that unusual? What's the norm?

I was spending $60 on take out that required the bartender to fill 2 growlers and place an order for 4 small pizzas. The pizzas were boxed up and bagged in the kitchen, and delivered to her at the bar. All she was required to do was enter the order into the computer, fill the growlers, and then hand me the growlers and the bag, in addition to preparing my Diet Coke.

I had a refill, but IME, most places don't charge you for a drink while you're waiting for take out, unless you order a bottled or alcoholic beverage.

In this case I guess you tipped yourself

A lot of the time they seem to charge before you get the food on takeout, and I typically don't tip at that point. If something special is requested, or the service is really good (quick) I'll consider it. Yes they are spending a bit more on a foam tray, bag, condiments and utensils, but saving on labor involved in cleaning up too.

Never realized they'd do that.

I have a soft spot for local places where they treat me well and I usually tip there. However, if I'm getting it from a chain place, meh.

no, except now I do for ONE place, they serve an item we can't get anywhere near our house and we REALLY love it....... the young high school kid that takes the phone orders and is always there, goes into the kitchen and gets the order straight. He "earns" his one dollar for getting our order straight, every time. Plus he waits on us first when he sees us walk through the door.

I can't decide what is more inappropriate and tacky. A tip jar in a drive through window or a tip jar at a self serve yogurt place where you do everything yourself and the employee doesn't do anything besides weigh your cup and take your money.
Luckily I only get Starbucks in airports so I don't have to think about something as asinine as a tip jar in a drive through window.
