I can't believe I just found this thread! I've only been focused on eating at Michelin restaurants for just over a year and I'm hooked :-)

We did the Jean-Georges lunch on a Saturday last October, and it was by far our favorite meal and one of the best deals we encountered.

FG Restaurant, Rotterdam, The Netherlands [REVIEW:PHOTOS]

April 2016, Our Lunch experiences

During our stay in Rotterdam in April 2016 my fiancé celebrated his birthday and to have a memorable day, we decided to have lunch at a Michelin starred restaurant.

We chose FG Restaurant, because we thought it was the most fitting for our needs as we wanted to try something new.

https://c8.staticflickr.com/8/7347/2...9a521e1b_c.jpg|| FG RESTAURANT || 2* MICHELIN STARS || CHEF: FRANCOIS GEURDS || OUR LUNCH IN ROTTERDAM || THE NETHERLANDS || AS PART OF OUR DUB-AMS-[RTM]-AMS-HAM-[TXL]-DUB-TOUR-APRIL 2016 || by UggBoy UggGirl, on Flickr

The Mainport Hotel by Inntel Hotels (Please see review.) was just three stops by tram from the restaurant.

At the time FG Restaurant (2 Michelin stars) was still at their former location at Lloyd Straat, but they have now moved to a new location as of August 2016.

The harbor location was a bit remote, near the nautical college, but very easily accessible and we enjoyed the architecture of the area. Some buildings seemed to have been old warehouses.

Arriving a bit earlier than our reserved time we explored the area. We made photos of FG, when the Maître d' approached us. Learning that we had a reservation he invited us in, even so there were still around ten minutes left. We were glad about it, since the weather was good, but the wind was a bit biting by the water.

The building was understated, while the interior was colorful and contemporary. We both liked the art work and the mushroom shaped light features. We have seen similar features a few years ago during our stay at the Rey Juan Carlos I in Barcelona.

The premises at the new address seem to be less lavish, yet thoroughly modern, based on the photographs online.

At the restaurant we were warmly welcomed, our jackets taken and brought to our table. We passed the open kitchen.

Soon afterwards our waiter brought warm napkins.

We were given different menus including the three course surprise lunch. We chose the latter, because the others contained too many ingredients my better half can't eat mostly due to allergies.

Our waiter offered to start with a glass of Champagne or cocktails with and without alcohol. My fiancé chose the alcoholic version, while I had the alcohol free signature house cocktail.

We ordered a bottle of still water, which was delivered first and was BRU from Belgium.

Like the meal the cocktails were a surprise too. Both arrived smoking - it was an illusion, since they were cold. A sure sign Francois Geurds, the chef and owner of FG, had worked under Heston Blumenthal at the Fat Duck.

My fiancé’s cocktail contained cranberry juice, Pimm's, ginger and orange pieces, while mine was made with vanilla and citrus fruits. We both loved them.

Soon afterwards the Amuse Bouches arrived. They were Piccalilli sorbet and star anise in a tomato cone, Tom Kai with brill, onions and herbs and a typical pastry from Bordeaux filled for him with goose liver pate and for me with quince.

The greetings from the kitchen were a delight and showed already the high caliber cuisine we could expect from such a beautiful restaurant with a top chef.

The most surprising dish was the Piccalilli sorbet in a tomato cone. It was like popping candy and went off in our mouths like fireworks.

We encountered the Bordeaux pastry again at VAU in Berlin (1 Michelin Star, review to follow.) and at Harrods in London. There are different varieties, either unfilled or with different flavors, both savory and sweet.

The brill reminded us promptly about our travels to Thailand. It was well balanced and subtle flavored.

Next came bread rolls with olive oil from Spain and handmade butter and sea salt from the Normandy.

Our starter was cod with lobster mousse, micro herbs, paprika and broth. It was delightful. Again the balance of the textures and flavors was there.

The main course was another fish dish. This time around it was sea bass with orange oil broth, white and green asparagus, peas and Japanese seaweed. The broth was added at the table. The sweet and savory combination and difference between tender and less tender ingredients was working well and the diverse textures shined through every single bite.

Dessert was dark chocolate, coconut disc, pastry, pineapple mousse and pieces, coconut sorbet and a chocolate disc.

The top and bottom were soft, while the discs were hard, so this was an interesting dish too.

Instead of tea or coffee, we opted for hot chocolate, which was served in a wine glass and made with Valrhona chocolate.

Of course the positive surprises were not finished just yet. There was a playful candy floss cloud nest, served with FG branded hard boiled candy and mousse with candid caramel apple. The fig and lychee sorbet drink was served in little bottles with straws and used as a palate cleanser, which rounded up our meal perfectly as we remember fondly these beautiful culinary memories.

Service was very attentive, due to us being the only diners for lunch, which surprised us. Effectively our lunch was a private memorable affair in a beautiful 2 Michelin star setting. We were impressed the whole kitchen brigade was just there for us.
Of course the staff used the time as well to prep for dinner and some paper work so that they could get ready for later in the evening which was interesting to see.

Our lunch cost 139.50 Euro (ca. 155 USD). Good value overall. The bill came in a sea shell, another unusual touch.

Should we return to Rotterdam we will definitely have lunch at FG Restaurant again due to our very positive experience and overall beautiful impression and tastes we enjoyed together.

Would we recommend this restaurant to a friend? YES! ^
Would we want to enjoy again lunch or dinner at this restaurant in our future? YES! ^

uggboy, thanks for the review!

Question-- what camera are you using? Is it a smartphone camera or a "real" camera? My iphone 6 can't take photos like that. Or maybe its operator has no skills...

Thanks DaveInLA, I've used our Canon G15 for the above images. It's a "real" camera which seems ideal in terms of size/quality for our restaurant images during our travels. The camera itself is compact, sturdy and handles overall well IMHO.

Highly recommended by both of us, but it's an older model and might not be anymore widely available on the open market.

Canon has added since then a few newer G models in their offerings and from what I've read about them they're pretty good and worth the investment.

Btw. FG Restaurant comes highly recommended, our lunch was memorable and they've now moved on to a new address within Rotterdam with a new interior concept and I presume the same exemplary high standards for their cuisine which we enjoyed very much. We would visit again.

Cheers & Safe Travels. ^

Have been to six Michelin guide restaurants in London the past month, but not all with stars.

Petrus. I needn't have worried about the changeover in the kitchen. The meal was faultless and service on-point. A better experience than RGR, IMO.
Marianne. Sort of an exclusive dining experience, but it wouldn't be on top of my list for London. Maybe in the top ten, though. They get a lot of use out of that Thermomix.
Clove Club. some standout dishes but marred by an utter lack of ambience. I was seated at the bar and served by hipster/bartender waiters, one of whom noticeably smelled. Food that good demands a more professional presentation.
Nopi. This was a surprise - Ottolenghi's Mayfair restaurant offered up some of the best food I had anywhere all month.
Dishoom. Been wanting to try this one as it's gotten so much hype. The best thing about it is the value. I would never think I could feed a party of six in Covent Garden for that price. As an aside, I notice that the nearby Moti Mahal has now closed. That's a shame.
Hawksmoor Seven Dials. Brilliant as always.

Also we went down to Fulham to eat at the non-Michelin Fishers fish and chips after seeing the rave reviews. It was indeed very good and I found one of those great London scenic walks you would never know about otherwise along the riverside near Fulham Palace. It was worth the trip.

Sorry you had that experience...but your experience is vastly different from the many amazing experiences we've had at Meadowood over many years and including our most recent, just about 6 months ago. We far prefer Meadowood to the French Laundry, in fact. Meadowood is to us one of the best...and one of the most relaxed, fun fine dining experiences.

The room in the Mandarin Oriental is fine, you have a Hyde Park view (more a view over a Meadow). The interior is modern.

At Lunch the offer the full menu and a 3 course Prix fix menu at 40 GBP. I took the Prix fix.

I had high expectations and still like the concept of traditional dishes. All dishes were good, but I missed the totally wow-factor. Considering it was in the top-10 of San Pellegrino list I know at more than 10 better restaurants;). I also don´t really understand the 2 star rating, in my eyes 1 star would be adequate (same with Hand and Flowers). Neverless a nice lunch.

Dinner has actually fallen to #45 on the Pellegrino World's 50 Best list.

Dinner and St. John's, both in London, are 2 of the most (if not the most) overrated dining experiences I've ever had based on Pellegrino/Michelin. We found the interior restaurant for Dinner to be spectacularly beautiful, but the food to be completely uninspired and not always cooked properly, and the service to be combative and not terribly friendly. (We just hated the food, the menu, and the lack of any ambience at St. John's...though the service was pretty good.)

It depends on the restaurant and how improperly prepared the dish was. I had overcooked scallops at Oaxen Krog in Stockholm and all I got was a sorry. With that said, I've never had a big issue at any of the Michelin restaurants I've dine at.

So we were out shopping at a discount appliance store for a washing machine, etc., in Beaune, and at a traffic light I looked left and saw this Michelin guide restaurant http://www.caveau-des-arches.com/

It was noon and I was hungry so we stopped. Due to the heat wave I was wearing shorts and sandals, but we were kindly accepted down into the cool medieval cave with arched ceiling for a wonderful lunch accompanied of course by great wine.

Can I say I love living in Burgundy. :D

Are at two Michelin-starred spots while in Belgium this past week:

-De Gouden Harynck (1 star): traditional European-style cousine with hints of Indian inspiration in flavors. 5 courses for EUR 95 - not a bad deal.

-Hertog Jan (3 stars): about 20 minutes outside of Bruges...this blew me away. Such thoughtful beer and wine selections, absolutely amazing food that is touched up (but not overdone) with gastronomic technique. Like all other tables, we were invited into the kitchen for a glimpse of the action - and then given a goose liver-filled meringue as we went back to be seated.

I've been to a lot of Michelin-starred spots, but this was probably the best of the best in terms of putting together food plus experience to create an unforgettable evening.

Le Canard Nouveau, Hamburg, Germany [REVIEW:PHOTOS]

April 2016, Our lunch experiences

During our trip in April 2016 we wanted to try for lunch a Michelin starred restaurant in Hamburg.

We thought Le Canard Nouveau had a stunning location, looked beautiful and the cuisine was an interesting fusion between Germany, the Mediterranean and Turkey.

https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8549/2...3dd98c49_c.jpg|| LE CANARD NOUVEAU || 1* MICHELIN STAR || 16 G. M. POINTS || By Chef: Ali Güngörmüs || OUR MEMORABLE 3-COURSE LUNCH IN HAMBURG OVERLOOKING THE HARBOUR IN AN EXCEPTIONAL SETTING || GERMANY || OUR DUB-AMS-[RTM]-AMS-HAM-[TXL]-DUB-TOUR-APRIL 2016 || by UggBoy UggGirl, on Flickr

We also liked the chef Ali Guengoermues was my own age and had worked at the Kaeferschenke in Munich.

The translation of Guengoermues is quiet poetic. It means: Look into the sun, look towards the day.

Le Canard Nouveau holds a Michelin star since 2006.

The location is a bit off the beaten track and we took a taxi to get to the restaurant. It cost under 20 Euro / ca. 22.70 USD one way from our hotel, The Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, but it can vary, depending on traffic.

The views over the working harbor, the Elbe river and the surroundings are relaxing and very beautiful.

Le Canard Nouveau is in the same building as Meinhard von Gerkan's architectural office, who was responsible for the design, and home. The structure looks like a steam boat from a long gone by era.

A bridge leads down to the restaurant which offers more beautiful views over the water.

The interior is warm, but understated with lots of wood. The near floor to ceiling windows allow natural daylight to stream into the dining room.

At the time the tables were covered with white linen cloths and decorated with a tulip in a beautiful and understated vase.

At the entrance we were greeted by the chef patron personally and brought to our table inside. We could have chosen to sit on the Lime-tree terrace too, but thought even so the weather was nice and sunny, it could get a bit chilly otherwise.

We were offered an alcoholic aperitif, but we asked for a mocktail, which wasn't a problem. It contained a rhubarb, apple and orange juice combination as their house cocktail and it was refreshing and tasty at the same time and suited the beautiful weather and views perfectly.

The non-alcoholic cocktails were followed by a bottle of Magnus Imperial Water. A light and refreshing gourmet water.

A bread basket with a mix of more traditional bakery items and thin bread sheets topped with spices, was served with salted butter.

We chose to have three courses. There is a two course business lunch menu available during the week for 39 Euro / ca. 44.30 USD and every additional course costs 12 Euro / ca. 13.60 USD more.

He had the mackerel with bacon and cucumber. A dish he really enjoyed and is still talking about today.

I had Turkish pasta with tomato and aubergine. It was a well-balanced dish and unusual.

Our main courses were stone bass with curry foam, cauliflower and cauliflower mousse and goats cheese tortellini with ginger foam and lentils.

We loved our dishes. The foams were lightly flavored and not overpowering, it was beautiful and subtle.

As dessert we had two hazelnut mousse with mocca ice cream, which was delicious.

With our hot chocolates came very appetizing petite fours.

Our bill was 136.90 Euro / ca. 155.45 USD.

We thought the Michelin star is well deserved IMHO and the quality of the setting, service, food and beverage is overall of a very high standard.

The staff was attentive and there when we needed them.

They were kind enough to invite us to explore the area a bit further incl. the Japan Room in the restaurant before calling a taxi for us.

We would return again to this beautiful restaurant, since we liked the ambience, understated service, cuisine, views and architecture.

Would we recommend this particular restaurant to a friend? YES! ^
Would we want to enjoy lunch/dinner again at this particular restaurant in our future? YES! ^

Indeed an interesting restaurant which was never on my radar so far. Thanks for your review.

Thanks offerendum for your compliments. I'm glad to learn that Le Canard Nouveau is now on your radar. Highly recommended.

Cheers & Safe Travels. ^

uggboy, thanks for your reviews. Though I'm glad you enjoyed these two restaurants so much, it's clear to me I would not. "Simplicity of pure ingredients" as a mission statement doesn't seem consistent to me with smoking cocktails, and Le Canard's apparent foaminess of sauce just doesn't appeal to me. But chacun à son goût!
