April 2016, Our lunch experiences

During my fiancé’s birthday travel in April 2016 we decided to have lunch at VAU. It has one Michelin star and is just off the Gendarmenmarkt, where the Franzoesiche Dom and Deutscher Dom are located, on Jaegerstrasse in the heart of Berlin, Germany.

It is in a quiet area and VAU has as a direct neighbor the Greek Embassy. The classic building has a vibrant color and a Mediterranean feel.

The interior was designed by Meinhard von Gerkan. He was also responsible for Le Canard Nouveau in Hamburg, where we had lunch only a few days earlier. Please see our review.

There are some things both restaurants have in common: The chairs and the use of wood. Otherwise Le Canard Nouveau is understated and Japanese/Asian, while VAU is inspired by the sunnier climates of Southern Europe.

VAU is divided into two spaces. One at the back, which contains the most of the tables, and another, bright space where ca. 10 people can sit. The window is very large, and reminds us more of a show window of a shop which lets in lots of natural daylight.

Another reason was the personality of the chef Kolja Kleeberg. He is very creative - not only in the kitchen. He is a musician and actor as well.

The first thing, when entering, we encountered was the bar, which looked stylish and right out of the 1930s.

We were warmly welcomed and brought to our table near the window.

There was an elderly couple already enjoying their lunch. Later a group and a single business man arrived. The atmosphere was good and the staff made us immediately feel welcome and at home.

The table was covered with a white linen cloth and had a flower in a vase as decoration.

We were offered Seltzer water, which was included in the price of the lunch, and asked if we would like to have an aperitif. We checked if they had alcohol-free cocktails. The bartender came to us and asked if we wanted a classic or modern one. We decided for the latter. It was made with Matcha green tea, lime, grape juice and soda and was served in a Martini glass. We both loved it. The combination was just right, not too sweet and not too dry.

Next bread and salted butter were brought to our table which we enjoyed, a good start.

We chose from the lunch menu and decided on three courses. Our starters were roasted cod, onion tarte fine, rocket salad and anchovies and asparagus ceviche, elderberry, pomelo and watercress.

It was followed by crisp pike perch, spinach, brown butter, almonds and pink grapefruit and pink fried duck breast with wild broccoli and radicchio trevisano.

Desserts were Piedmont hazelnut cake with cream praline and sea buck thorn and Tarte Tartine with rum raisins and walnut.

My fiancé wanted to try the other non-alcoholic drink with orange juice and Sun-bitters. It came in a long ball glass and was decorated with skewered orange pieces. The "classic" was equally memorable as was the "modern" non-alcoholic cocktail we enjoyed earlier.

With the choice of our coffee, Cappuccino, which was also included in the meal, we received Canele, the same pastry as we had at the FG Restaurant in Rotterdam, The Netherlands earlier during our travels. Please see also our review for more.

The menu was well prepared, the flavors balanced and fitting to the ambience of the restaurant.

The invoice came in at 115 Euro / ca. 130 USD.

The service was attentive, warm and very well aware of our allergies and dislikes.

The lunch was delicious, of high standards and beautifully presented, beside this we enjoyed the location and service, plus the overall setting of the Restaurant VAU.

When in Berlin, we would eat here lunch or dinner again in our future.

Would we recommend this restaurant to a friend? YES! ^
Would we want to enjoy again lunch/dinner at this restaurant in the future? YES! ^

Thanks again uggboy. VAU got some bad reviews over the last year and mostly I had bad experiences if eating at restaurants of chefs, which are present at the television. Next time in Berlin I have reservations for Lorenz Adlon and SkyKitchen. Perhaps will also do Facil and Tim Raue, but not sure yet.

Thanks for your compliments offerendum, you've some superb/memorable restaurants coming up. Enjoy and please report about your experiences here on FT.

In regards to VAU, we enjoyed our lunch and would eat there again. Superb quality/value curve IMHO.

Librije`s Zusje Amsterdam

We ate at the Librijeīs Zusje Amsterdam in September, which has 2 Michelin stars. Itīs located at the Waldorf Hotel. I decided to wear a dark suit and I was terrbible overdressed. The only guest with tie. The highlight was some kind of rastafari (After a long inner process I decided not to publish the picture).

They offered 2 menus (one vegetarian, one with meat) with 8 courses. We decided to take a pescetarian menu which was priced adequate with 148,00 €. Water was a flat at 7,50 € Service was attentive and well trained.

The food was of high quality. While I liked most of the "normal" dishes I didnīt really like the deserts. They combined sweets with hearty ingredients like tomatoes or balsmic.

As this is a frequent flyer board, we would be remiss to discount the fine offerings from Michelin rated chef's aboard Air France through this quarter.

Over the next three months, Air France customers will be able to enjoy new dishes signed by Régis Marcon in La Premičre class and by Guy Martin in Business class on board long-haul flights on departure from Paris.

Plus of course the Ducasse restaurant in the Premiere lounge. The only Michelin level restaurant in an airport.

Not in a lounge, but Top Air Stuttgart has a star. Also other airlines have catering designed by Michelin starred chefs. At the moment for example Diethard Urbansky at Lufthansa.

Is one of those courses frosted goat's cheese and beet root? Couldn't quite tell, but that's what it looked like.

Yes, it was beetroot. Was some frosted special cheese, not 100 % if goat, but I think so.

Ate at The Square - London - for a three course lunch set menu

Service was impeccable. I would say an excellent value for 40 pounds/person.

Several rounds of homemade bread throughout the meal - forgot to take a picture.

We have Gordon Ramsay, The Ledbury, Alain Ducasse, Dinner by Heston, and Helene Darroze coming up. I will have a pretty good comparison by the weekend.

I just happened to find my souvenir tasting menu from The Square this morning. Looks like they have revamped the menu quite a bit since I was there. Roast foie gras with sweet and sour plums, plum sake, and macadamia nuts was my favorite. Maybe they lost a star with the sale?

Shocked that you are eating at all of those places in one go. At one time in my life maybe, but not anymore. The amount of calories would do me in.

Been to all of them at one time or another except Alain Ducasse. I simply can't get past all the critical reviews. Every time I resolve to go, I change my mind.

Interesting news here:

Suicide chef’s restaurant keeps Michelin stars

The l'Hotel de Ville restaurant in Crissier, outside Lausanne, has retained its three-star Michelin rating despite the shock suicide of its star chef Benoit Violier in January.

It was one of three restaurants in Switzerland to win the coveted three stars, the Michelin Guide said in a press release on Wednesday.

Only 100 restaurants around the world are honoured with three stars.

Violier had emerged as one of the giants of elite cuisine, steering the restaurant outside Lausanne to three-star honours just four years after taking over.

He had also been named chef-of-the-year in the prestigious Gault & Millau guide in 2013.

The culinary world was shocked when the 44-year-old chef took his own life just four months after the French-based La Liste labelled Crissier the best restaurant in the world.

Following his death, Violier's widow Brigitte vowed that Crissier would remain open, with former sous-chef Franck Giovannini taking charge of the kitchen.

"The new chef has successfully retained the highest distinction," Michelin said.
