Don't get me wrong, I love the tradition of the day (and you forgot to mention football). I just wish all that food prep energy had different results.
As for the actual product that makes it to the table, I have 2 categories for the meal components. Sure things and saying a prayer that it all works out. Sure things are my creamed onions, stuffing (yes, cooked inside the bird) sweet potato casserole and veggie. The biggest say a prayer item? The turkey. Will it be dry this year? Is there enough dark meat on this bird, or is it a typical big breasted American specimen? I baste and baste and baste. I brine. I’ve done the strips of bacon on top. Still I’m convinced that some birds are simply dry and nothing is going to save them. Some of my best turkeys have been cheaper ones bought in the supermarket. Some of the worst? Organic, free range, heritage, whatever other moniker you want to add models. But as mentioned earlier, it’s a tradition spanning 33 years of marriage and years in the kitchen while growing up. |

Sweet potato pie to me is another one of those things that makes Thanksgiving "meh". It tastes more like a dessert than a side dish, but if I were to rank the desserts I want, it's pretty much at the bottom. It's kind of like when I was growing up in the 70s and mom would serve jello with fruit and whipped cream as a "salad" or side dish...just didn't make sense on the table. And I realize not liking sweet potato pie is unlikely to be a popular opinion here! I do like that we're having a Thanksgiving discussion a month in advance though :). |

Boil sweet potatoes to soften. Mash. Add butter, cream, brown sugar and ginger. Whip’em. Enjoy! As for the onions, they are pearl, in a cream sauce. Peel onions. Parboil them. In a skillet, melt butter. Add vermouth. Add a couple of cloves. Add cream. Reduce to a thick syrup. Remove cloves. Add the onions. Sprinkle sugar on top and carmelize. Reduce by 1/3. Place in casserole dish and place in 325 degree oven for 45 minutes. Done! Thanks mod! |

Grilled swordfish and shrimp (marinated in Meyers Lemon olive oil, capers, garlic, lemon zest, salt/pepper), asparagus, split/toasted leftover corn muffins, blueberries w/whip cream, and a homemade oatmeal chocolate chip cookie for dessert :)

Sienna Tavern -- delicious but I'm still stuffed. Burata; wagyu meatball; shaved Brussels sprouts salad; spaghetti with crab and blistered tomatoes.
We split each dish but it was still too much food. |
Roast chicken thighs (short salt / water brine - 3 hours?); two thighs got seasoned with some Korean bbq / Chinese garlic sauce. Remaining thighs were seasoned with freshly-ground salt & pepper.
