What is this dish? I can’t figure it out. Pancake? I’m mindful of not quoting photos yet don’t know how to explain the food in this photo.

I had a hair appointment this afternoon and Mr. CE picked me up. It was dinner time and we were in our old hood so we went to our favorite conveyor belt sushi place, which used to be our go-to Friday night spot. We moved and then the pandemic hit, so I don't think we've been more than once or twice in the last 2.5 years. It's nothing to write home about, and not worth a separate trip to the old hood, but was nice to grab a quick bite. (Each dish is covered with a clear plastic cover, so no COVID concerns. (But we will have to go back at some point -- they have a loyalty program and I was surprised to find I still had a punchcard in my wallet. The next punches get us either $25 off or we can spin the wheel of fortune and possibly get a bigger discount. We ate there enough that we used to spin the wheel every 4-6 weeks and would get $15-50 off our bill.)

Looking forward, I reached out to one of my best friends (who happens to be an ex-boyfriend) today to see if he had a good recommendation for take-out Passover dinner next weekend -- we hadn't loved the spots we'd eaten at/taken out from in recent years, and we didn't want to host a big seder. He made a few suggestions, but then invited us to join his family at their country club for a second-night seder. It used to crack me up when we were dating, because we'd go to the club for things like Mother's Day brunch and half the family would show up early so we could nosh on shrimp cocktail from the buffet before the other half of the family, which followed kosher rules, showed up.

I was just looking at my bill for last night's dinner. What the heck is an "open food charge"?? I am going to call them when they open later but it sounds like a scam to me.

Did you order something that wasn't listed on the check?

No. All i can think of is that they charged us for the doggy bags? We each asked for a box and we even had to put our own food in it. That would be really scummy of them especially since they would be charging us for food that we already were paying for! And this was not a dump. I will find out & it that is it--I want a refund.

usually open food is for a dish that isn’t a daily item so it might not be programmed as a regular item for their computer. Or server couldn’t find the dish in the computer so that they used this easy “miscellaneous” item.
There’s no chance that it’s some side dish that was a daily special? Or some special sauce or beverage?

extra pita for the dip?? The tzatziki sauce for the spanakopita - because when I get spanakopita at a restaurant, it doesn’t come with tzatziki sauce.

It's becoming common. Did you order anything unusual? Some restaurants here use that as a "off menu item" charge.

That said, there are several places that charge higher (or actually list the charge) separately for takeout... I think it's more common in YVR that YYZ, but my beef is that they don't tell you until after the fact (in which case it puts the pressure on you to pay)... I've encountered some places like that who don't disclose all the terms and conditions.... Some places don't want to stay in business it seems.

assuming it’s freshly house-made pita, served warm, plus plated or in a basket - it’s easy to be $9

That'd have to be one great pita at that price.

Yes and lots of it.
I called the restaurant and it was explained. There were 3 of us and when we ordered we asked how many pieces came in the order of spanakopita (it is 2) and I guess we asked if it could be 3 so they charged for the extra piece. It was still pricey to pay $9 for a little square of spanakopita but at least we weren't charged for a doggy bag!
