Awesome, thanks!
Didn't know they haven't reached NY yet! They have launched pop up stores recently for 12 hours in Australia. Not sure if it's a tease or if they are expecting to go international...

Usually just a teaser, they don't use any frozen products so any restaurant needs to be within 24 hours drive of a processing plant, which there are two, one in California and one in Dallas. If you want the flyertalk experience visit the In-n-out near LAX on Sepulveda. If you don't make it, any should do, I'm partial to the one near UCLA in Westwood, but that's because I often stay at The W and I can walk to it.

I'm sorry, just don't see the big deal about In-N-Out.

I much prefer the burgers at Steak & Shake (midwest US), and I prefer Wendy's to In-N-Out.

BTW, not all that excited about Five Guys, either. Smashburger and Graffiti Burger have been good IME. Haven't yet tried Shake Shack, because every time I go to NYC the lines scare me away.

Bottom line: like most foods, burgers are a matter of individual taste. Vive la difference!

Have you tried the burger Animal Style? For me, that makes all the difference. Without it, it's just a decent burger--thin, light, and fresh but lacking in big, bold flavor--that's not really worth going too far out of your way for.

Go to one of the other locations. The one in Madison Square Park is always mobbed. I've had good luck at the Brooklyn one and have never had to wait in line behind more than perhaps five people there.

The Habit Grill just opened up recently here in Daly City, just a couple miles away from In-N-Out. I've tried them a couple times, and I like their burger too.

Habit makes a good burger; I've gone to the locations in SLO, Santa Barbara, and Ventura when I'm in the mood for a quick, tasty, and relatively cheap meal.

I'd give In-N-Out's burger a slight edge, though.

Habit only has mayonnaise, not a special sauce or spread, correct?

Just a footnote/public service announcement for those of us in the veg minority: In-n-Out cheese isn't vegetarian. It's made with animal rennet, like many cheeses.

Crap, that's bad news :( Is that the case with every fast food restaurant cheese? I'm pescatarian, but I won't eat meat for cruelty and spiritual reasons and veal is a good example of cruelty..and I loved the InNOut grilled cheese option :(

Nearly all cheese is made with rennet. When I was growing up we lived a block from a store that sold rennet-less cheese. It was terrible stuff and couldn't be sliced without crumbling all over the place.

Ok my US friends, I need your opinion!

I'm heading over to NYC this year from Australia and am basically making a whole stop in LA/Vegas just to visit In n Out. My wife and I love burgers. So much so, we opened a burger joint of our own where we live.

Question is, what do we order? First timers, so we'd like to know what are the must haves. We know about the secret menu, but have no idea what is actually on it. We know we must try animal style burgers too. I'll probably have one normal and one animal style. Is this a good way to go? Is there anything else we need to order on the burger? Thanks for your help!

Double double animal style is my go to. I'd recommend it.

Some cheese is made with vegetable rennet (whatever that is) suitable for vegetarians. I'm on my mobile and can't post a link, but Google it. I THINK Taco Bell and Subway cheeses are okay. I'm non-dairy, so no direct experience.
