So when you want to order a Coke, you have to say "I'd like a Coke coke"?

Yes. Again, perfectly normal statement at least where I grew up: "I'll have a coke." "What kind of coke?" "A Coke coke."

It kind of spoils the good work when the map claims it's based on 120,464 respondants. Sigh.

I'm also surprised "soda pop" wasn't allowed as a valid expression. Has no one read S.E. Hinton lately?

I used to say "regular". I was raised calling everything coke too, even though we lived in the northeast. My is originally from Maryland though, so that's probably why. I switched to saying "soda" though.

I lived in MO for a while. STL and COU say Soda. MCI and places like that say pop.

Parts of IL around STL say soda, but parts of CHI say pop.

Pretty much educated people say soda and hicks say pop.

And if your preference happened to be Pepsi, it would be "I'll have a Pepsi coke"?

That's exactly right. In fact, I'm surprised to find that there are even six counties in Texas that refer to it as "soda".

The whole "coke" thing in the South must drive the Brand Management folks nuts. On the one hand, the Coke people must love the notion that their name is synonymous with cola. On the other, they could hate it when something bad happens related to the competition, and it's attributed to "coke."

Imagine a Pepsi recall because of contamination. The headline on the news that night is "coke contamination prompts massive recall...."

That seems to contradict what the map says...which is that people in that part of the country use "coke" to describe all kinds of colas.

If they say "Pepsi" when they want a Pepsi, wouldn't it be more accurate to say that they just use the brand name, instead of a generic like "soda" or "pop"?
