Im wondering if the DL experts can help me out here...
DL out of EZE appears to be giving folks checking wine limits on how many bottles they can carry. I had similar issues with CO but was able to sort it out after starting a thread over on the CO boards... Im hoping I can do the same here.
The issues are arising when Pax want to check in styrofoam shippers (profesional packaging) that contain 12 bottles... sometimes pax are told they can only bring 6 bottles, other times they are being mis-quoted the 5 liter rule which applies to 40 proof beverages (and NOT to wine), etc.
Does someone know if DL has a specific written policy on how much wine you can check?
Is there someone from DL customer services that posts on FT that I could contact about this?
Many thanks,
Alex (Gaucho100K)

Wine is noted as a 'fragile and bulky' item on this baggage page:
http://www.delta.com/traveling_check...ulky/index.jsp
This pages notes that spirits under 48 proof are not hazardous:
http://www.delta.com/traveling_check...oods/index.jsp
This suggests, but does not absolutely affirm, that DL has no limit for checked wine. Good luck.

I really don't think we should bother him with this sort of stuff that is outside his area of expertise and influence at the carrier.
If you show up at the counter with several items to check, I don't think they're going to ask you what the contents are. Just pack up the wine, show up, and check it.
I would be more concerned about the Customs guy on the U.S. end when you come through with five cases of imported wine.

There are Delta people in this forum (mostly unofficially)
They probably just don't have an answer for you.
I don't know the answer to your question. I've never heard of a limit as far as packing it in checked baggage but that doesn't mean ther isn't one or that there isn't some special consideration for EZE. I haven't been able to locate an answer for you on the company website.
Is it possible that you are not allowed to check more than what the US allows you to bring though customs?

The US allows you to bring a lot of wine through customs. Whether you have to declare and pay a duty on it is another story altogether. DL is not the customs duty police.

Customs has no limit on the amount of alcoholic beverages you can import; it's just that over a certain amount you need to pay duty (although sometimes they waive that on a case by case basis). We have often brought a case per person in, with the duty precalculated for them (they appreciate that!), and all but one time have been waved through.

I have never questioned anyone checking in wine. We have some medallions here in CVG that travel to SFO with two wine boxes empty, then come home with them full. They each hold 6 bottles. So I would say checking in twelve is fine. Just make sure the boxes are suitable for wine bottles.
I have also done alot of travel and have never been questioned when I brought wine back. It does sound like the agents were misquoting the 5liter rule.
Sorry I coudln't respond earlier. I had a hard time getting on this site yesterday.

This thread reminded me of the one I posted not too long ago...asking about having wine as checked baggage on Delta......as I should post a follow up about my experience with traveling with boxes of wine as checked baggage.

In my case, the agent at the counter in SJC asked me what was in the 2 boxes that I was checking.
Both were the 6 bottle 'wine shippers' (a cardboard box with styrofoam insert)....which I picked up while in the Bay area.
After I told him I was taking back some wine and that the bottles were packaged in appropriate packaging.......he simply affixed the baggage tag, some 'special' tape to indicate that the box was traveling as 'Delta Checked Baggage' and a bright colored 'fragile' sticker.
FWIW, the TSA apparently opened only one of the 2 boxes....as the 'special' tape had been slit and a 'TSA courtesy card' was left in the box on top of the styrofoam insert.
All of my bottles made it back to NYC intact.

I'm fairly certain that NY is no problem in this regard and I've not heard anyone mention GA being an issue either, but several posters have reported trouble entering at SLC with more alchohol than UT routinely allows. I don't know the rules at CVG, but KY has a large Bourbon industry with lots of political clout, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are restrictions on importing liquor there too.

While that is true for U.S. federal government, several states have strict limits on the amount which can be imported, and U.S. Customs will enforce those limits. This is detailed on Customs website here.
