The multibillion dollar airline is very verbal about the BE ticket conditions. OP had the chance to spend just a little bit more of the hard-earned money or call/text DL as soon as they knew they wouldnt be able to make it, and only lose a small amount.

Passenger makes an honest mistake and misses a flight: Sorry, it was in the contract.

Airline can't solve IT problem, canceling thousands of flights around the country: Not our fault, sleep in the airport and come back in a week.
