Lowly new FO here.

I didn't write down the numbers of where I was on the list (first time participating in this!) but I was like 20-something out of 30-something for the first legs of both flights and then in the teens for the second legs.

Welcome! I made FO in August and GM 11/1. Both are my first elite FF status and I've really enjoyed it this far. Don't have any other scheduled flights until December, so I'll be curious to see how GM differs from FO in terms of upgrades. Have you gotten any upgrades to FC yet? I remember my first (unexpected) UG and I was smiling the whole wy from MSP to MCO. Unfortunately that experience ruined me for ever flying Main Cabin again.

So here is my question to all you upgrader, do you find out why you were not upgraded, or just assume all the people in the premium cabin are higher up in chain than yourself? What if you are not upgraded, but you see empty seats in the premium cabin, do you try to find out what happens or just let it go?

If I don't get upgraded at the Window but see that there were upgrades and that there are still open seats, I usually don't lose my hopes (unless it's DCA-ATL-DCA), I also know that there are many people purchasing last minute tickets with a fare class higher than my usual ones, and I also know that there are FCM offers that can reduce the number of seats available. If I'm not upgraded by the time I am at the gate and I am close to the top of the list, I ask the agent if I should board or not (instead of asking "Has F boarded full?"), they usually tell me that there are x passengers misconnecting and advice if they will get me or if I should wait.

If I board and I notice that the flight departs with empty seats in F where I could have been upgraded to, I send a quick note to DL through twitter.

I haven't been upgraded myself (and have no planned flying for the rest of this year), but I got upgraded years ago with a traveling companion who was FO. It was my first time traveling first class and it was an eye-opener for sure. Here's hoping for more upgrades for you as a GM!

I was surprised by having to work for some upgrades over Thanksgiving, ultimately going 3 for 4...

MSN-ATL Tuesday 5:30 PM: Cleared (+1) at window, wife (GM) got C+ at her window and was 5th runner up for F at gate.
ATL-MEM Tuesday 10:30 PM: No window UG (went from 8 open at window to 2 at T-25 hours). Applied 2xRUC* at T-25 hours, cleared (+1) at T-5 hours. 0 seats available at gate, wife was ~ 15th.
MEM-MSP Friday 8:20 AM: 1 seat was open at DM window, finished 1 and 2 for 0, sat in C+. Wife was 8th, sat in main cabin (2 C+ upgrades cleared at gate).
MSP-MSN Friday 3:30 PM: No window UG (dropped from 6 to 2 at DM window). Since the flight had changed by +75 minutes several months ago, I got moved to...
MSP-MSN Friday 11:50 AM: At T-4, cleared (+1) immediately, wife (GM) cleared at her window, and 3 of the 4 people on the gate upgrade list cleared too.

* Using 2 RUCs for an hour flight may seem silly, but not when you have 4 of them in your account and no remaining or planned DL travel before they expire...

RUC's are meant to be used. Better to use them the for them to remain unused

I've seen a lot of upgrades at these weird times, T-24 hours, T-6 hours, etc.

It seems weird to not let these go to the gate. My suspicion is that Delta is doing this so that it appears that fewer people are getting upgrades, which makes FCM seem more attractive.

Just getting back into Delta status as an FO

11/23 DL 2907 ATL to LGA
Pay with Miles ticket, with a non-status companion
Upgraded to C+ at 24 hours
Upgraded to F at T-30

I like the double upgrade system, pretty easy to understand

Gold no reserve, rebooked onto Thanksgiving Sunday AM flights the evening before due to the storms in the Midwest:

ORD-MSP (E175) cleared when rebooked T-12
MSP-SAT (CRi9), cleared at T-1, 2 of 9 for 2.

My nemesis route today: DL 1803 the 11:07 AM ATL-RDU flight. As a PM on a U Fare on the MD-88 I was #18 of 46. Ended up with a middle in C+
