As most of us ...well, all of us, know, there was a power failure at ground ops in ATL on Monday (2016-08-08) at 2:39AM which lead to mass-cancellations and delays and rebookings spanning as far as next Sunday (2016-08-21) as of Aug 9. Passengers didn't hesitate to display their dissapointment, Twitter, ACS, and DL phone lines were ambushed with customers. In an effort to keep our fellow flyers informed on the incoming changes and information, this Wiki was formed.

August 11th, 2016 // 11:00AM ET - Flights OPs Return to Normal
Flight operations have returned to normal following Mondays outage, airline officials said at noon today. Delta started the day with roughly 25 mainline flights canceledsome due to bad weather in the Midwestand no additional cancellations are anticipated.
The airline is back on its feet, moving past this weeks disruption and operating normally, said Dave Holtz, S.V.P. - Operations and Customer Center. Running a reliable operation is something we pride ourselves on and frankly, that didnt happen this week. But our teams have worked tirelessly to bring back the dependable airline our customers have known us to be and have come to expect from us.
SLC.jpgWith the impact of the power loss is in the rearview mirror, the airline is carefully monitoring the development of a weather system that may hit the eastern third of the U.S. later today, with the possibility of air traffic control-related delays possible in the Northeast. No additional cancellations as a result of weather are expected, however.
The airline plans to fly more than 610,000 people today. By noon Thursday, nearly 2,200 flights had departed with more than 85 percent departing within 15 minutes of the scheduled departure time.
Even so, customers traveling today should check the status of their flight at delta.com or the Fly Delta App. Delta's travel waiver has been extended through Thursday.
Monday morning an uninterrupted power source switch experienced a small fire which resulted in a massive failure at Deltas Technology Command Center. This caused the power control module to malfunction, sending a surge to a transformer outside of Delta, resulting in the loss of power. The power was stabilized and power was restored quickly. But when this happened, critical systems and network equipment didnt switch over to backups. Around 300 of about 7,000 data center components were discovered to not have been configured appropriately to avail back-up power. In addition to restoring Deltas systems to normal operations, Delta teams this week have been working to ensure reliable redundancies of electrical power as well as network connectivity and applications are in place.

Nonrev Travel Discouraged; Buddy Passes embargoed
Delta employees and family with nonrev flight privileges are discouraged at this time from making any personal travel until further notice. I agree but what TSA should do and what their competence level will allow them to do are two different things. Like most other gov't agencies, they like to say "No" just because they can, and perhaps provide some lame excuse to go along with their "No" which has no basis in reality.

I've lost a lot of respect for Delta over the last couple of days. My flights yesterday went fine, but my 18-y.o. daughter is still stranded in ATL. Last night at 2:00a, after 10 hours of delays and I've lost count of how many flight cancellations, the Diamond desk was saying that the earliest they could get her into her destination airport is Wednesday. Meanwhile, pax in her shoes are left to fend for themselves for two nights at the ATL airport with no food vouchers, hotels, showers, etc. etc. Delta's response is "there are 30,000 people stranded there so there's nothing we can do." I hope there are at least a couple of competent class-action lawyers among the stranded.
Also, it has been widely reported that DL staff were making snacks, etc. available. Plus, they issued a $200 travel voucher (and maybe more will come), so this should have been enough to at least cover meals, and possibly a night at a budget motel if cost is a concern.

IBM India is now part of 'GST' (to both be politically correct and recognize more business is performed in other countries, notably Eastern European nations).
Can't make this up.
But they definitely screwed up - IBM India (back in the day) did my Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity test at Capital One, and they were 95% useless. I could have automated and run a better test with a kindergarten class.

Currently stuck in DTW. Earlier flight home just cancelled due to no available crew. Luckily 2 seats opened up on a later flight today while the sky club agent was checking into it for me. She quickly grabbed them for us. I feel sorry for the rest of the plane though, since there is nothing at all left for today.

That's just it - to go from the east side to the west side, there's no "hope". It's just "you can't". 1 and 3 are on the west side with its own checkpoint. To get to 2 and 4 from 1 and 3, you have to ride the train to the central hub, exit the secure area, cross the terminal (past the food court, shopping areas, and the Hyatt), and then go through security and take the tram to 2 or 4. Depending on the security set-up, you *may* be able to transfer between 1 and 3 OR between 2 and 4 without clearing security since 1 and 3 use the same security checkpoint and 2 and 4 use the same security checkpoint, but even this is dependent on the set-up that is currently in use both by TSA and when you get off the tram. IIRC, I've seen both (where you could and where you couldn't transfer), but my memory could be fuzzy. I flew out of MCO quite a bit from 2005 through 2010 but haven't flown there since.

Granted, Delta is not a tiny company and has infinitely more resources to throw at the problem than we did. But the takeaway is that even redundant failover, sometimes fails.

Thankful I'm not flying this week.
My brother-in-law was flying ORD-TUS. Mid afternoon, he was put on ORD-ATL then ATL-TUS. The last flight was cancelled @ 9:00 so gave him directions to get on MARTA so I could pick him up so he could stay at our house.
I called DL and the best they could do was get him ATL-SLC-TUS on Wed. I tried again this morning and it was improved to the non-stop this morning. That flight looks to be on an almost 2 hour delay but at least he's getting home today.

All I know about the outsourcing at DL is that it came from Jay Fredericks, and the mandate was "at least 30% of daily IT functions/operations" needed to be outsourced to India (Tata Consulting, or TCS). Knowing what I do about Theresa, both from those who worked for the PMNW and my 5 years with DL, it doesn't sound like something she would mandate on her own, it would have had to have come from one of the SVP's above her.

I just completed online check in for DL 2302 MCI-MSP and DL 2287 MSP-BZN for tomorrow morning 8/10 for a 9 month planned vacation. The online check in showed on time, not cancelled as of today. The flight is at 6:30am so we have to get up and head for the airport at 3:30am.
What is the likelihood that my flights will actually go tomorrow and not be cancelled? Is there a backlog in MSP that needs to be cleared? I sure don't want to drive to the airport, park the car, and then find out my flight is either cancelled or seriously delayed. There are numerous flights MCI-MSP but very few MSP-BZN.

Over half the DCA-ATL flights are canceled today, and one of them is mine.
I tried calling Delta, and they're calling me back (supposedly) though the waiting time is listed as simply 'over two hours', which is apparently the maximum allowed time that they'll report. For a while I could see my reservation on the site, but there was no online way to change it, I just got errors. And now I can't even find it on the site, it's not where it used to be, not under Current or Past or Future trips anywhere. So I have no idea what's going on with it.
I'm not sure if they'll pay for my hotel but whatever, I'm traveling on business so I just booked a per diem room at a local hotel to have something.

This has been confirmed to be official policy by several TSA employees here on FT as well as a more official source (the TSA blog, IIRC).
