There is only one flaw I can see in the argument: That the 747 fleet is stretched thin. It may have been the last year as ships were in for mods and one was stored. It allowed for only 13 or 14 to be in service at one time. Now, all the mods have been completed, the one in storage has been refitted and back in service, and with all planes up and running it should not be a stretch to add some service.
If anything, the 747 fleet has been underutilized for several years.

Besides, the whole discussion started because DL announced the addition of 2 new TPAC routes, requiring 4 birds. Now that's stretched thin.

Thats 3 days of irops disruption due to 1 MX event. I'm sure there are a LOT of pax who have missed and are missing connections in NRT due to this.

And that has never happened with any other fleet type?

Now I realize for classification they will want to remain ahead of the curve and also I realize there could be pressurization issues inherent in these designs, but it does seem conceivable we can get something faster that doesn't create a sonic boom and that doesn't have the full capability of the classified realm.
Current designs are at 0.85 Mach 567 mph (913 km/h) for the crusing speed on a 747-400.
I am suggesting we can get faster.

Anyone remember the Sonic Cruiser that Boeing had plans for? It was supposed to fly at near but below 1.0
That got scrapped and the 787 eventually came out instead.

The fleet will be a bit more stretched this summer though when SEA-NRT goes 744.

The current utilization is not overly stretched. The situation you cited is exacerbated by having 2 744s out of service and undergoing routine maintenance (ships 6302 and 6314 I believe) currently. If the full fleet had been operating, you would not have had those cascading delays with ship 6301's MX issue.

Also, with these two routes added, how exactly is DL going to do maintenance on these birds?

That's why they are doing preventive maintenance now, when there is some slack, before the summer peak. When DTW-ICN starts though, as others have mentioned, there will be some cuts in the 744 utilization on some other routes, probably in the HNL markets (weak yen, etc.)

An announcement while inflight said that everyone on board would get a $100 voucher. That is nowhere near adequate for the mess they made out of my $5.6K BE ticket (OKC-ATL-NRT-HKG).

Moreover, how would DL handle those who have paid a lot for tickets but ae using SWUs or miles to upgrade? It would be very annoying to be rebooked in coach on another carrier.

I'm not saying it will never happen, but it's not happening anytime soon.

Given this reality, it would have been helpful if DL would have alerted me to the NRT misconnection before 2:30 am when I was leaving home at 4 am.
