There is a private message component.
You have to "follow" @DLAssist. Then you ask them (publicly, via tweet) to "follow" you. {You should set up all of that ahead of time, so you're not scrambling later on}. After that, you are able to send them a direct message which is private. I usually start off with "Re PNR xxxxxx...." These people are wonderful.

Just this past weekend I had two instances of delayed flights and messed up reservations.
First was Saturday, RDU-ATL-DEN. We were all on board but still at the gate when ATL issued a ground stop. Once it got to the point where I knew I'd miss my connection, I called the PM line and had them switch me to a later flight to DEN. BTW - Definitely no "protection" available, they had to fully switch me to the new flight. I then logged in a few minutes later to the DL app on my phone to see where I was on the ATL-DEN upgrade list for the new flight. My online itin did not show me confirmed on the new ATL-DEN flight, so I clicked the "confirm changes" button in the app.
So how either due to the phone agent, or due to my clicking the confirm button, my reservation for the RDU-ATL leg (which I was sitting on the plane) got cancelled. I wouldn't have know except the GA came on board and asked to see my boarding pass, and informed me that I was no longer listed on the flight. They got it fixed with minimal hassle, and as a bonus I got rebooked in paid F (I was sitting in F on an UG) so I got the %50 bonus. ^
Then again on Monday I was flying DEN-MSP-RDU when we had a mechanical in DEN that caused me to miss my connection in MSP. I checked the DL app mid flight DEN-MSP to see what I had been rebooked on, and saw now I was going MSP-STL-RDU. No big deal except I had a very short connection and when I got the gate for MSP-STL they couldn't issue me a boarding pass because my reservation was totally hosed. I was told to get on board and they would fix it by the time I got to STL. The GA at STL had the same problem and couldn't issue a boarding pass either. Luckily I was still able to get on and finally get to RDU only 2 hours later than I should have.
I have never had so many issues with the DL irregular ops rebooking process as I did this weekend. My itins on the DL.dumb web site had so much red all over them and crossed out times, that I could barely figure out what plane I was supposed to be on.

She told me that Delta was having inventory problems because they had so many people "protected" on flights that they may or may not take, so they have ended that process. If you ask me, they're having inventory problems because they fly far too close to capacity during peak travel times and NOT because they were protecting frequent flyers from being stuck on missed connections, but I digress...

I almost got hosed with the Delta.com flight protection a couple of weeks ago. My EWR-MSP was delayed by an hour and the Red Coat at the ticket counter was nice enough to put me on stand-by on the EWR-SLC flight and then confirm my connection from SLC all while keeping my EWR-MSP-XXX connection in place. When I got into the terminal I fired up the laptop to view the itinerary. What I saw was EWR-MSP (You may miss your connection) and then a Confirm the Following link for:
EWR-SLC-XXX in F
Naturally, I was excited - I can confirm both segments and be in F, why not! When I clicked the button, it removed the MSP connection as well as the stand-by on the EWR-SLC flight and only had me confirmed on SLC-XXX, not the EWR-SLC as the page had indiciated. I had to run up to the counter where a wonderful gate agent got it all squared away. And fortuantely she was able to get me onto the EWR-SLC flight and even paged me to ask which seat I would like.^
Lesson learned - don't touch Delta.com during IROPS.

I really wish they would make Twitter available without paying for Gogo. It's great to be able to have a real person working on your reservation while you're in the air. Or if not Twitter, then some other mechanism of chatting with or messaging a real live Delta agent.

I was delayed from MSY-MEM Sunday night and called the DM line seeking advice on available flights and was told that they could SDC me but they could not "protect" me on another flight. Perhaps an issue of the willingness of a customer service agent to make things happen?!?

I was connecting to OKC (MSY-MEM-OKC). The agent on the DM line said that they were unable to 'protect' flights but that she was happy to SDC me.

Now you can access all the features of Delta.com.
I would agree that somehow making DLAssist accessible without GoGo charges would be a great feature. But as it is via twitter that might not be possible without opening the rest of twitter.

[QUOTE=azeckel;17877211]Be careful about this, as it seems some things have changed since last year in regards to "protection". I was on the diamond line on Sunday night due to mechanical out of IND causing me to misconnect in ATL. I hung up and called back and was told the same thing by a different agent, but with some more detail.
Last Friday I was delayed in IND due to a mechanical and it look like I was going to misconnect in ATL. I called up the DM line and they protected me on a later flight. I guess the rule changed on Saturday

Since mid last year I have had some agents protect without a problem (including Twitter) and then others say it can't be done. A SC agent told me they weren't really supposed to do it and that even some of their processes had been blocked by software changes. IMO, Delta issued some directive to try and get the number of un-needed/dupe reservations out of the system and some agents took it to heart while others didn't.
During a major IROP even I can see where protecting passengers can cause more problems than it solves, but for the one-off misconnects it really is nice to know you have a backup.

In IRROPS, I NEVER trust DL IT meaning I never use kiosks and never use DL.bomb, EVER. Call or talk to live agents.
