As far as DLs ex-NW 744 is concerned, I always enjoyed the ride upstairs during my NW years. I don't need to sleep during the ride, just be comfortable reading a book or looking out the window, so horizontal or nearly flat played no role for me. There just is no better place in upstairs in a 747, was like this from the early 100 series and is up to now. Sadly no US carrier has decided on the 748 as of now and probably never will. Have to catch it on a LH flight then.

Even worse from SFO
They downgraded this route from a A330 to (the very oldest and most primitive) 767. That made me cancel any plans (at least on DL) for this trip.

Agreed! My wife and son recently flew this a/c to Narita. She will not do this again. The A330's we so much better. Some other airline will now get our $$ when we fly to Japan.

While I agree the 744 in Y is not a pleasant 14 hour ride, in J it's fine, and arguably an improvement over the recliners on the 772 that used to run this route. For business class travelers ex-NYC, who presumably drive a fair amount of revenue, the 744 is indeed an upgrade.

I kneel down and thank the Lord each night that I flew this route when it was still a 777. Especially considering that due to volcanic activity we didn't do a great circle; we flew due west for a flying time of 16:40.
What is the usual flying time on this route?
More generally: I'm attempting to avoid Y flights on Delta 744s and 763s until the interiors are refurbished. Which kind of sucks, given that the 744 is my favorite plane. It's a sad day when I opt for an Airbus A330 over a 747, but I frequently do when booking Delta!!

I just went to NRt last week from DTW then ultimately tio SIN on a 777LR and back. The 777 business seats are great as are all the movies available. The 747, even in upper deck, was just plain uncomfortable and seemed tired.
I love the 747 but will avoid until upgrades are complete.
Although one day internet on those long flights would be great....

Advice for upper deck 747-400
I just got off the NRT/DTW flight on a 747-400 seated in upper deck BE. I had seat 73A which was touted by seatguru as one of the best. I enjoyed the flight but the seats were not, I repeat not lay flat. On the trip to NRT I flew from ATL in a 777 with lay flat seats and I gotta tell you it was a much better experience. I don't know what you call the seat that's not lay flat but it leaves you at a wierd down angle, Next time I'll take a stronger sleeping pill.
Is there any AVOD in the upper deck? How's the food?
Any suggestions - other than a stronger sleeping pill

Fortunately, I'm on an A330 on the next leg NRT-BKK and on the way back I routed myself through ATL on a 77.
I've always wanted to try a 747 upper deck.
Should I be bringing my own movies & entertainment?
Thanks!
(Yep, I already did a search for these details and couldn't find the answers).

So, I'm flying MSP-NRT on a 747-400 and have 73A after looking at SeatGuru.

In BE, there is AVOD. IIRC, the same selection as the A330s. Not as modern as the 777s, but decent selection of movies and music. Food is the same as any other BE offering. I like the Japanese option ex-NRT. Overall, a very similar experience to the A330s in BE.
I definitely prefer the upper deck. A more private experience, service is usually a little better, and you get the nice windows bins on the side. 73A is the best seat as it's a bit easier to get out over your aisle seat neighbor.
