Any data points if delta or aa gift cards trigger the $100 airline credit on the world elite card?

kouichi Jul 22, 2020 8:39 pm

any idea if buying a Uber GC within the app would trigger the 20% statement credit? Looking to just buy $250 of GC for family and get $50 back if that's possible.

Seems no DPs have been reported. HSBC tech isn't that sophisticated. I'd guess if the charge is from Uber it would count. Let us know if you have any additional info.

Upcoming Changes to Rewards Portal

HSBC has been sending me emails for over a month now promoting a refresh to their rewards portal. This is for all their card so they are mainly showcasing more cash back options (statement credits, gift cards, etc.) and a new travel portal powered by Priceline. However, for the (two) eligible cards which allow for points transfers they note this option will remain. In a FAQ section its mentioned there may soon be more options and to stay tuned.

Q: Will customers with a Premier World or Premier World Elite Card still be able to use Rewards for Miles to transfer their Points to airline partners?

A: Yes, and we are looking to expand our transfer partner options later in the future. Stay tuned!
Another thing that is interesting is noted under the Explore Travel Options area (boding mine).

With HSBC travel rewards you can:

  • Fly virtually anywhere with no blackout dates or seat restrictions on most major carriers.
  • Transfer your Rewards into miles with participating frequent flyer programs
  • Get $100 or more off airline tickets booked through HSBC Travel Rewards Center
  • Get travel statement credit to cover travel you booked with your HSBC Credit Card.

Is this $100 benefit existing or new? There is a footnote on that bullet but it just provides a number to call the rewards center.

I'm looking forward a UI refresh and maybe some updated transfer partners. One can dream for updated points earning too.

I guess I should have wrote increased points earning :D

I wonder if there was ever a discussion to make the card very competitive to attract new premier clients. While churning would be possible that would require a lot of effort.

I don't believe HSBC, US Bank, City National et. al. see credit cards as a tool to attract affluent customers. They do not have the scale to compete with the card factories. These products are defensive. Designed to be good enough to keep their depositors from defecting.

Loading UberCash on the Elite and the World card triggers the Uber benefit

Didnt end up trying airline giftcards, taxes for JAL award ticket triggered the $100 airline benefit credit on the elite card so probably anything airline coded would.

OMAAT noted that then Mastercard Postmates benefit got the axe. I wonder how long it will take for HSBC to update their website and remove this. :D

The new rewards portal will be live as of November 2 2020 (after two days of downtime). Only thing noteworthy in the email was

  • Today, only purchases made directly with airlines are eligible for travel statement credits. After conversion, you will be able to redeem travel statement credits for airline, hotel or car rental purchases made directly with these merchants.

They also noted a lackluster pay yourself back program at a 1cpp rate with a $25 minimum. What is interesting though is World Elite Mastercard holders receive 1.2cpp when paying yourself back for airfare, hotels or car rentals. However, the extra points are returned back to you as a credit.

As a Premier World Elite cardholder, when you redeem Points through Pay with Rewards for airfare, hotels or car rentals, you will receive a 20% Point Bonus. For example, a $300 hotel room requires 30,000 Points to redeem. After you redeem you'll automatically receive a 6,000 Point Bonus added to your Points balance in 1-2 business days.

Major Benefits Update

Interesting email this morning on benefits changing to the HSBC World Elite Premier Card. Does anyone have updates on the regular World Elite? Starting on January 2021.

An Even Better Travel Experience
  • Your Travel Credit1 will increase from $100 to a maximum of $400 per year. In addition to airfare, your travel credit will include hotels and car rentals will also be eligible. Book all travel with HSBC Travel located on our new Rewards site.
  • Instead of 2 airport lounge visits per year, you will receive unlimited lounge access for yourself and a guest, every time you travel.
  • We're adding Travel Services Medical Protection Insurance to provide you with peace of mind when traveling.

Fine print for travel credit which makes it almost unusable.

1. You will receive an automatic $100 Travel Credit for every $2,000 spent in travel purchases (minus returns, credits and adjustments) booked through HSBC Travel, up to a maximum of $400 per calendar year. Travel booked with Points is not eligible for Travel Credit. Your Travel Credits will post automatically to your credit card statement in 1-2 billing cycles. To receive the Travel, Credit Your HSBC Elite credit card must be open and in good standing.

Elevate the Everyday
  • Receive a surprise Luxury Thank You Gift when you spend $50,000, $75,000 and $100,000 annually. Up to 3 luxury gifts per year3.
  • Various Merchant offers will be available throughout the year on us.hsbc.com/myPremierWorldElite

Everyday Essentials
  • Earn 2x Points on Home & Health purchases, including: groceries, gas, healthcare, and pharmacy (up to a max combined spend of $3,000) from January 1, 2021 through June 30, 20214.

Get Lyfted
  • The $100 Uber/Lyft HSBC Ride Share Statement Credit will no longer be available as of December 31, 2020, however you will continue to receive up to $120 in Lyft App Credits annually when you use your card for rides with Lyft2.

The credit is more restrictive than anything we've seen. This is quite a downgrade. The Lyft credit being exclusive is interesting. I didn't think Uber/Lyft were "paying" for these. However, now it seems Lyft is funding this benefit. HSBC is a small player though. Can this be an expanded Lyft Mastercard partnership?

When the email mentioned that there were "new enhancements" I knew that this was bad news. This euphemism is never a good sign.

I´ll be cancelling the card.

This Lyft benefit applies to all MasterCard World Elite cards (https://www.lyft.com/world-elite-mastercard), so I can still benefit using another card.

The travel credit is almost useless. It translates to a small discount at Priceline, which can be 5% max.

The unlimited LK visits is useless if you already have another card that gives PP, which is better (or LK).

It was easy to offset $200 from the $395 annual fee. Now, the Uber/Lyft and travel "true" credits are gone, and the card is not worth anything close to 395.

kouichi Oct 30, 2020 1:30 am

I second that I'll be canceling this. Terrible decision on HSBC's end with this joke of "enhancement." I've also submitted feedback to let HSBC know about this too. They just don't care about their customers and this shows 100% that.

In addition, I have trouble using the HSBC premier world elite card when buying a $25 Uber cash in the app. Uber says this card is not supported by them. How are you guys using the card to buy Ubercash?

Blackheath Nov 2, 2020 1:55 pm

I've just called HSBC to cancel the card. They offered me 20,000 points to keep it open. I probably would have accepted it if they offered 35,000 or more points. The $395 AF was going to hit later this month, so thought it better to just go ahead and close the account.

It is a shame. There are much nicer cards from Amex, Citi and other banks. The HSBC World Elite became a premium-priced card, without the premium benefits.

JHake10 Nov 2, 2020 7:01 pm

I like the Boingo benefit but it’s not worth the new effective AF assuming I don’t use the travel credit. I recently canceled my Chase Sapphire Reserve so having unlimited access to Lounge Key with restaurants may come in handy. I’m not sure what to do with my points if I canceled. I only have 80k so it’s not a ton.
