OK - I tried this. Will see what happens; and I am traveling next week so it will be amusing to see if my current card stays working.

Haven't received the card yet (16 days later), so I feel like this mechanism might not work very well.

Now it does. I just got a replacement Premier MC card, and the new card is chip+pin.

Here's a copy of the flyer they sent me with it:

Awesome. Looks like Chip+Sig is priority, but at least sounds like it supports offline PIN (a similar configuration to Barclays Arrival).

Nice that it has contact less EMV also.

What makes you think that it supports offline PIN?

I used it in Canada, and it acted as Chip+Sig.

In answer to the question why do we think it'll do Chip+PIN, because the flyer they sent with the card said so. It also emphasized that if you don't know your PIN, you'll be unable to use the card some places.

Nowhere does the flyer say that the card has an offline PIN. Places where you wouldn't be able to use it without a PIN might be PIN-only, but they could be either online PIN or offline PIN.

I have the HSBC cash or fly card. I received my replacement card, and it has a chip on it. On the brochure it said you will receive the pin in a separate letter which I haven't received. I called customer service to ask for the pin. The rep I spoken to told me he would request a pin letter to be mailed to me. I asked him repeatedly is the pin "offline" or "online", and answer I got is the pin would be compatible with your card.:confused: I pressed him further by asking him about offline terminal, once again he said the pin would be compatible with your card. Then I asked him is it the pin hard coded on the chip, once again he didn't answer me directly and just told me it is compatible with all terminals. I knew by then he really has no idea or even what I was talking about.

I think its safe to say this card is signature priority with online pin.

The PIN cannot be validated by the chip alone because HSBC allows it to be changed by telephone. Offline PINS can only be changed by insertion in a device (typically an ATM) which can write the validation code to the chip.

The Arrival+ PIN is changed by telephone/online as well but requires insertion into a terminal to take effect.

HSBC Premier World MasterCard®

Hello,
I'm relocation to the US and was offered to open an HSBC premier account and get the HSBC Premier World MasterCard®.
After the second year, I'll need 100K in my investment/saving account.

My question is, what happens if after a year I decide not to keep that amount of money in HSBC and change my account type to Advanced or a regular account.

Do I lose my credit card reward points and terms? Do I continue keeping it? Do I get another HSBC credit card? Does it influence the credit score (this being my first credit card...)?

Thanks,

Do you already have a Premier account in another country?

You don't need to maintain the 100k balance if you're already Premier in another country.

Assuming that you will continue to maintain the required balance in the other country.

no, don't have an HSBC account

Have other bank accounts in my own country, but not HSBC.

If I want to keep the card (good for credit score, as my first card), but don't want to keep on having 100K for many years, it is possible?
Or do I have to ask for a "regular" credit card and then i can keep it without any limitations?

1. Yes if you don't have another card with the same reward program.

2. No.

3. You will have to ask.

4. You don't have enough history. Your score is going to look bad anyway.

1. Yes. Paying the monthly maintenance fee for the Premier account.

2. It is another method.

IMHO - this is one of the worst cards in the U.S. Unless you don't qualify anything else, I will stay away from this card.

Not worth the trouble.

jjoe123 Sep 18, 2014 2:18 pm

Thanks for the quick response

Why worst card? The HSBC premier? or all the HSBC cards? What about HSBC platinum with Fly rewards?

What cards do you recommend then?

Since I'm don't have a credit history, I don't think I have too many banks that would give me a credit card with high credit. So far, I have options in HSBC, citi bank and Stanford credit union (all with credit of over 10K$)
