This thread is a continuation of the discussion posted here from 12.08.2012 - 5.13.2014: Barclays Arrival/Arrival Cards (1.05%/2.1% travel credits)

Current offer for Arrival Plus is 70K pts w/$5K spend & AF waived 1st year.

Barclays says that you earn “miles” but you’re actually earning cash back with the card since you can’t transfer your Barclays miles to airlines. But you can redeem them for statement credits at 0.5 cents per mile (poor value) or 1.05 cent per mile if you redeem for travel.

You get 5% of your miles back if you redeem for travel, so 40,000 miles gets you $400 towards travel and 2,000 miles back (5% of your miles back). You must have at least 10K 'miles' in your acct if you wish to redeem as a travel credit. 2500 'miles' can be redeemed for a stmt credit though.

If you want, you can redeem miles to cover a portion of a travel charge instead of the full amount. For example, if you have 80k miles and a $740 airline charge, you can choose to redeem just 70k to cover $700 of the charge.

You earn 2X miles on all purchases, so you’re effectively getting 2% cash back for each purchase. But since you get 5% of your miles back when you redeem for travel, this is effectively a 2.1% cash back card when miles are redeemed for travel.

This makes the Barclaycard Arrival PlusTM World Elite MasterCard® (with 2.1% cash back for travel) better than the Capital One Venture card which offers only 2 miles per $1 or 2% cash back, only if you spend $30k+ per year after first year, because Arrival Plus AF is $30 more than Venture.

If you receive a call from 302-255-8000 after applying for this or any other Barclay's card, it is a legit number! You can also call them back directly at 866-951-1437.

Not sure I'm going to be able to meet a 5K spend in 3 months.
I pulled the trigger anyway and the app went pending. I'll report my results when I learn more. Doesn't look good. I used the online app status check link (https://www.barclaycardus.com/apply/...ications/index) and it reported:

" Currently we are unable to offer you a credit card issued by Barclays Bank Delaware. Details on why we could not make you a credit offer will be mailed to you."

If Barclays is now 5/24 as some claim, that would explain things.

Barclays is a weird bunch. i read all about their 6/24 rule but decided to go for it anyways. I've had the A+ twice before, most recently closed in June 2018. I am roughly 30/24 and have one other Barclays card open (M&M card opened in November).

I was instantly approved, with a low CL of $5k, but approved nonetheless. Don't know how or why but I'll take it.

A friend and I applied online at the same time for the Arrival Plus card. Neither of us got instant approval. My friend, who is actually in a better financial position than I am, was declined about a day later, apparently because of too much debt to income. I was approved after three or four days. I had two recent inquiries on my credit report, both for the same automobile purchase. I'm not sure how I'll meet the spending requirement.

The CL is only $5,000. I have a $20,000 limit on another Barclays card (American Aviator, formerly USAirways Aviator) and could probably have them transfer some of it to the Arrival Plus card. I'm not eager to earn any more AA miles, because AA doesn't fly from my local airport.

Turns out I am at 7/24. Will have to check the wife's numbers.

EDIT: Turns out my wife was only 3/24. She applied and was instantly approved for $7,500.
@callmedtop, glad you got instantly approved at 30/24!
@kochleffel, glad you got approved and best of luck meeting the spend.

Wow so many variations of data points of people who are lol/24 approved and others who are way under x/24 getting denied.

I had an Arrivals+ card 2+ years go and it has been closed for quite some time now (should be 2yr+)

This language scares me:
Bonus Miles:Primary Cardmembers will earn 70,000 bonus miles if you use your new credit card account to make $5,000 in Net Purchases within ninety (90) days of your credit card account being opened. This one-time 70,000 miles offer is valid for first-time cardmembers with new accounts only. Existing cardmembers and existing accounts are not eligible for this offer. This is a limited time offer and may be cancelled at any time without notice.
https://cards.barclaycardus.com/bank...te-mastercard/

From time to time, we may offer bonuses of miles or other incentives to new Barclaycard Arrival Plus Mastercard cardmembers in connection with an application for a new account. These bonuses and/or incentives are intended for persons who are not and have not previously been Barclaycard Arrival Plus Mastercard cardmembers. You understand and agree that you may no longer be eligible for any bonuses and/or incentives in connection with a new Barclaycard Arrival Plus Mastercard account after this Account is opened. If you receive a bonus or incentive for which you are not eligible due to your status as a current or former Barclaycard Arrival Plus Mastercard cardmember, we may revoke the bonus or incentive, or reduce your miles by the amount of the bonus or incentive, or charge your Account for the fair value of the bonus or incentive, in our sole discretion.
https://www.barclaycardus.com/applyc...Cs.jsp?tc39598

Since I've already been an Arrivals+ cardmember before, I assume I'm in their database and that I am not eligible for these bonuses? (The 2nd quote mentions clawback and even charging you for the fair value of the bonus miles!)

Hence I'm surprised to hear people who have had this card already in the past, getting it again. Do they just not enforce that rule very harshly?

That *is* scary verbiage. Looking forward to hear from others if this rule is actually enforced. Wouldn't want my wife to go through a 5K spend only to have a clawback or chargeback of $700 (current offer being 70K). She had the Arrival Plus a few years ago.

Right.

The thing that I'm thinking is that people can be approved and get the card....but approval of the card does not automatically = eligible for the bonus miles. The worst is if you use up a 5/24 slot and then you don't get the bonus miles.....so let's hope more data points come up with people who have had the card AND were still able to get the bonus even with the scary language.

Got my rejection letter from Barclays. The reason given was "The number of bankcards opened within the last 24 months." That's for 7/24.

but approval of the card does not automatically = eligible for the bonus miles.
That's why I plan on having my wife call customer service after activating the card and asking about bonus eligibility.

Do redeemed miles subtract from minimum spend and cause a clawback?

I've been hunting through this thread for the answer to this question to no avail (if anyone can suggest a different search term I should have used, I would appreciate it).

I was just approved for the Arrival Plus 70k bonus. I plan on spending over a thousand dollars on JRail passes for myself and my family next month. This will help me meet the minimum spend. After the points post, I plan on defraying the cost of the JR passes by applying the bonus points to the cost ($700, or rather $800 once the points from the minimum spend post). This will subtract $800 from the total amount I've spent so far on the card and take it down to $4200.

Will this cause any problems if I leave the amount spent on the card at $4200? I haven't seen any reports of clawbacks even on refunded tickets, so I'm guessing this will be all right, but I wanted to see what other people have to say. I'd rather not put an additional $800 spend on the card if I don't have to.

Just received my first statement. Total spend for the month was $5530 and the statement balance was $4720. On the transaction that put me over $5000 MSR, I was awarded an additional 70,000 miles on that transaction. Since MSR earned 10,000, I then had 80,000+ points available for redemption. I redeemed all available points against tickets purchased during MSR. Total statement credit $830+. Redeeming points earns an additional 5% so I immediately had 4,000 more miles. That plus organic spending the next month gave me another $101 travel credit.

Had the Arrival Plus 4 or 5 years ago, and, being me, app'ed without bothering to read the T&C. Will provide data point on (1) if I get the bonus, and (2) potential clawback scenarios.

If you have to spend $5,000 make good use of it by paying your water and gas utilities bills for one or two years in advance where you don't have to worry about clawbacks and buying things you don't need at this time.

Thanks for the suggestion breakthrough. So, my wife got her card today. After activation, I had her call customer service to confirm what the bonus and terms were. They just read off the 70K points for a 5K spend in 3 months verbiage. No warning about not being eligible for the bonus. That's encouraging but not conclusive. So we'll see what happens.

It’s always better to get it in writing via SM (IMO).
