Does all that canceling of cards negatively affect your credit score?

If you cancel a card you've held for a short time, it will have little affect for most people. Cancelling a card you've held for a long time can hurt your score because it will bring down the average age of your accounts.

I pay the fee for Priority Club Visa, and may do so for the Hilton Reserve card. I used to pay the fee for the Marriott Visa, but it became difficult for me to redeem my night because the category of the hotels I frequented all went up.

Pay AF:

United Visa Select, best earning potential of any United CC
IHG (PriorityClub) Visa, free night anywhere

Will considering paying AF:

Chase Ink MC, 5x bonuses on cable, cell, office.

Everything else churn and burn.

And a 5x Citi Ty/TYP card would give you $300 on the first $6K (and keep on giving after that) which then beats the BCP by $15 after the annual fee.

Yes, but that card is no longer available, and even if you got it, will only give you the 5x for 12 months. BCP is not a ton, but it's free money, and will likely stick around.

5x TY is available (as of last week anyway) at branches. And yes, for 12 months, but in that 12 months it can outperform several years of BCP!

Anyway, I was responding to:

AMEX BCP.....6x points for groceries, capped at $6k = $360. You bet I pay $75 a year for that card.

My point was that BCP really isn't $75 for $360, as the BCE is a natural alternative, which gives $180 for 0$ fee, so BCP is more $180 for $75, which while free money, might not be the best return. So not quite the no-brainer implied in the quote.

All, quick question on Annual Fees. On something like the AMEX plat when there is no current first year free, when is the annual fee due, on signing or 12 months after ? Does this impact when you can cancel vs a card with first year waived ?

Thanks

On cards where the first year fee is waived, when do we first see the AF hit our cards?

Now, let me ask you why would a card that you just said doesn't waive the first year fee have a time period where you can cancel without paying an AF?

Pain, that is why I asked the first part of the question, if you sign up for a card that is not waiving the first year are you expected to pay the fee on application or is there some sort of grace period. As I didn't know, I asked.

Thanks

It can take a few days or a few weeks for them to post it, but you'll almost always see it before the first closing date.

BTW, does the no-fee version have a different name?
And do you earn one mile per dollar spent on it?
I called to cancel my United MileagePlus Explorer card. When I said it was because I didn't want to pay the annual fee the first rep offered me a no fee version that only gets one mile per $2 spent. I said no please cancel the card and I was sent to retention where the rep said they can't waive the annual fee but they could give me a $100 statement credit if I pay the annual fee of $95. So I decided to keep the card since I have only had it for a year and I don't think I can get the bonus again right now anyway.

You can't get the bonus right now but 18 months after you cancel you should be good to go

Unless you buy a lot of United Tickets I can't see a reason to keep that card.

I just canceled Chase Marriott visa. Not an easy decision, but with their devaluation this year, Category 1-5 just doesn't cut it for our needs. But I will happily pay annual fees on both mine and my husband's Chase IHG Visas, as long as they keep the benefits the same. What a deal! I also plan to pay renewal fee on my CITI American Airlines visa, till I make a major award redemption next year, so I can get 10 percent of miles back. After that, its a goner, and I will apply for a new one to get a sign up bonus. Those are currently the only cards, we pay fees on. If I ever get approved for Club Carlson card, it will also become a "keeper".

So for Chase cards in general, is it normally 18 months after you cancel the card that you can apply and get the bonus again? Is that a good rule of thumb?

You can cancel the card now, save the AF, get a new Visa and that card will have the 10% redemption plus the 50K miles

Earn AAdvantage miles for using AAdvantage miles. Earn 10% of your redeemed AAdvantage miles back - up to 10,000 AAdvantage miles each calendar year.
