That doesn't really work either as the rate changes throughout the day.

Only real way would be to use multiple cards at the same merchant at literally the same moment and spend the exact same amount. And do that multiple times, at different times of the day and days of the week to try and get a true sample of rates. Then check.

Or, just trust people on this board who have years of experience

In your experience, when a card says "no foreign transaction fee," does that mean that there is no network forex fee?

For example, does the UNFCU Azure charge more than the BoA Travel Rewards for foreign transactions, or is it the same?

The answer to your first question is generally yes. If a card says no fee, the issuer isn't charging a fee and Visa/MC/Amex aren't charging a network fee either. There were some class action lawsuits a few years ago that effectively put an end to the hidden fees/markups.

That said, not all card issuers use the same forex rates. My understanding is that Visa/MC do the conversion for some card issuers, but other issuers do the conversion themselves. Based on my own tests and tests done by friends of mine (e.g., taking out 100 euros from the same ATM using 3-4 different no-FTF ATM cards within a minute or two of each other, or splitting up a hotel bill in three equal parts spread across three different credit cards), it would seem Citi is one that falls in the latter category, and on average gets slightly better forex rates than the standard Visa/MC conversion rates used by other issuers (Schwab, CapOne, PenFed). But our data sample is pretty limited, and YMMV. At the end of the day, it's very unlikely that any one card issuer is going to have more than a 1% better rate on average, so as long as you have a no-FTF card, you're probably in fine shape.

To add on to the other post:

"No FTF" means just that.

Regarding the rates, even if they use Visa's rate of Amex's rate or MC's rate, the rates can be different depending on the issuer based on the posting. Do they use the rate at the time of the transaction? Time of transaction posting? A daily rate?

My understanding is that the rates used for ATM/cash advance transactions are the rates in effect on the date of the actual transaction, while credit card purchase transactions are based on rates in effect on the date of posting (not the date of the transaction itself).

According to Visa's forex faq, the rate for transactions converted by Visa changes daily and is set the day before transactions are processed.

Looks like we can add Barclays US Airways to this list after the emails that went out yesterday:
Goodbye Foreign Transaction Fees
Now you can enjoy purchases with no foreign transaction fees when you use your US Airways Dividend Miles MasterCard in Dublin, Paris, or Shanghai. In fact, no matter where you shop abroad, you'll enjoy this new benefit.

It's just a shame we don't yet know for sure whether this benefit will transfer to the AA Aviator Red cards that these cards are supposed to be transitioning to later this year. But here's hoping!

I saw this posted on a couple blogs IRT Barclays US Airways MC referencing an e-mail.

"Now you can enjoy purchases with no foreign transaction fees when you use your US Airways Dividend Miles MasterCard in Dublin, Paris, or Shanghai. In fact, no matter where you shop abroad, youll enjoy this new benefit."

This card not listed in the wiki. I have this card and did not (yet) get the e-mail or snail mail notification so did not update the wiki. Anyone here get this notification or able to confirm?

I only updated the Wiki because it wasn't updated for a while(Heck I didn't even start the thing). Go ahead and update if you have updated info(I don't have any Barclays or US Airways CC's).

Since there is now a much more current and very capable dynamically filtered database with an easy means to submit updates that should help with accuracy:

www.spotterswiki.com/emv/

ideally the chart that is not current in this thread should be merged into that database and this chart retired. I am not a candidate, just an observer.

If someone cares - got an email today from Amex saying that my Rewards Plus Gold card will be converted to just Gold card and one of the benefits listed is no FTF. Still keeps the same annual fee, though, it seems...

The 0% forex on Citi AA Platinum MC cards just went live this morning (15 Nov 2015). I see it in my Benefits page when logged into my Citi AA Plat card account. I added it to the wiki, but I don't know of an official benefits page that lists this benefit yet so I didn't provide a link to that.

The link to the FT thread which discusses this card is:

Best "no foreign transaction fee" card - Quicksilver?

I need a credit card that doesn't charge a foreign transaction fee.
I am a UA 1MM and don't see any benefit of the UA cards. Also, not for the united club card.

I prefer a no annual fee card unless there is some real good benefit with it.

Quciksilver appears to give 1.5% cashback and 0% foreign transaction fee.

Is this a good choice? What other cards should I look into?
