where to find best intro offer with no foreign transaction fees

Right now I put all of my spending on Delta AMEX platinum and Chase Freedom but need to stop the Delta spend to maximize my MQM rollover for next year...not flying much with them next year and want to maintain my (low) status. I'm also going to be overseas for 5 months next year, so would like to find a card with a good intro offer and no foreign transaction fees. I have an unused Chase Sapphire, called to ask if their intro offer would apply if I upgraded and got a wishy washy "no" on that.

I'd appreciate any ideas. Rewards can be airlines, hotels, cash, as long as they're easy to use or transfer (not US aiways). Thanks!

What do you mean you have an "unused" CS?

In general, when I hear someone looking for transferability, CSP is a no-brainer. SPG Amex would be a no-brainer, but isn't, because of their 2.7% forex.

I think the current best offer is the Chase Sapphire Preferred card. Dont remember the details but think someone had said you could apply for the Sapp. Prefer card and still get the sign on bonus as Chase considers this as a different card than the regular Sapp. card. Could give it a try. Or the Chase United Explorer card as I think they are now forex free.

+1 the UA explorer is an awesome card. Especially now that it has no Forex fees. Add in the added 10,000 miles if u spend $25,000

Advice Please: Which No Foreign Transaction Fee Card?

Hi All

I'm looking for some advice to pass on to a cousin of mine who's looking to get his first card. He's an AU on a number of his parents' cards and has a score in the 750+ range but he's never had his own CC.

He tried to strike out on his own and, for reasons I am still trying to understand, he applied for the Club Carlson Visa and got declined (not enough credit history or something like that). Now he's coming to me for advice.

He'll be going abroad to study so a "no FT fee" card would seem sensible but my reading on here suggests that cards with no FT fees are often not the easiest to get when starting out (did I get that right?). What do I suggest he goes for? What card is he most likely to get approved for?

Thanks in advance for any help.

CSP is the way to go, or Chase United MPE if he's likely to travel on United at all. I'd probably go CSP though.

Thanks, that was the card I had in mind but I thought I remembered reading that the CSP wasn't that easy to get as a first CC....of course I could be remembering wrong

The two cards that come to mind that shouldn't be too hard to get is
1. Discover.

2. BoA Travel Rewards.

Both should be much easier to get than any no fee card from Chase like United or Sapphire and those aren't easy to get without a credit history.
I very highly doubt that Chase would give your friend the CSP as his first card.

I have limited knowledge about cards from Capital One etc, so I can only talk about cards that I have owned.

If he's just looking for a card that has no FT fee then how about getting a secured card from BoA to build credit and the Charles Schwab debit card that not only has no FT fee, it also has zero ATM fees ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD and there's no limit.

B of A Travel Rewards is obviously best if he really does have a good credit score, otherwise any no-fee Capital One (QuickSilver is best but a student card like Journey maybe all he can get if his score isn't really as good as he thinks it is)

Depends on where he's going abroad. If it's China, then go for the Discover first.

Where abroad is he gonna be? If Europe, then Capital One may not be too much help as all their cards lack chips.

So I'd recommend the Bank of America TravelRewards card. No annual fee, no foreign transaction fee, relatively decent conversion rate, and comes with a chip. It's Chip & Signature, though I haven't used it yet at unattended kiosks to try the cash advance PIN to see if that works.
But it's good when you're not in the touristy places, and especially in France.

Plus, it's very easy to get approved for someone's first credit card.
